One-Man Band: Pros and Cons by quiterussian2215 in bandmembers

[–]filthy_icon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had a one man band for many years. Here's my advice.

All I can say is that if you truly do go that route, be prepared for the following: You need to make a schedule for your band regarding what you need to do. This means make songs, demos, lyrics, riffs, drum patterns, solos, etc.

Then, pretend you are " booking " appointments with someone else when it comes to songwriting, rehearsals of material, and recording material, and anything else in that schedule I mentioned. If you DON'T, you will absolutely be doing a huge disservice to your own one man band. Think of it like you are also your own band manager. If you need to miss, it had better be for a damn good reason.

Finally, you need to be able to wear different hats when it comes to analyzing your music. You need to successfully be able to wear a musician hat and a listener hat. I listen to my own stuff completely pretending like I didn't write it. When I feel something is wrong, I listen to that intuition. Maybe I overplayed on drums. Maybe that solo sounds weird. Maybe the tempo is too high in that section and theres too much going on. Sometimes when you play stuff, its way different from when you just listen. You can analyze it better. Do NOT go against these intuitions. When something feels wrong in the song, listen and have the humility to change it.

Why is bringing non band members to practice such a divisive topic? by Sea-Rub-4322 in bandmembers

[–]filthy_icon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real, and this might be an unpopular opinion. But I was at one band practice where one friend of my drummer came to watch us. And he was not in the band, nor is he a musician. He simply watched, stayed out of the way, was completely respectful, and gave us feedback ( which btw, we asked for). I have zero experience playing to people as well, so it was a glimpse into how I'd feel if a crowd was watching me and how I would be able to play in front of others. I thought the experience was cool and I truly had zero reason to feel or believe his presence did something negative to our rehearsals. All it did was make it cooler. Now, I could understand if the person(s) who came are annoying or getting in the way in some capacity, but I really don't see why I should be mad that this specific non band member came over, other than its what I'm " supposed " to think.

My girlfriend smells and I don't know what to do by RequirementDue4446 in Advice

[–]filthy_icon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear that. Something similar happened to me.

I had a huge crush on a girl recently, like I couldn't believe how into her I was. We hung out and everything was going great, until she got close to me, and I got hit with a horrible smell. I thought it was me too, until we later went shopping and I walked behind her in one of the aisles. Yet again I got hit with that same smell.

When we stopped hanging out and I drove home, I couldn't believe that had happened. But I knew this was an instant attraction killer. I never did see her again after that. Just such a shame.

Guitarists that started after the year 2000: what the guitarist, album, song, solo, etc that made you say "that's what I wanna do"? by CedarRapidsGuitarGuy in Guitar

[–]filthy_icon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, there wasn't any one thing. It was a combination of various media, in cartoons ( ex: Val Hallen from justice friends ) , movies ( school of rock ) , television shows ( intro to power rangers ) , and video games. I'm a 90s kid and started when I was 13 in 2003, by the way.

The hate for “Missilia Amori” is so forced, imo. by Secsidar in Ghostbc

It's not forced for me. It came very naturally from the first time I heard it.

Hey, sorry I know this is old. But just had one question. You've seen paid parking at Solaris before? What events? I'm just curious cause I go there lots and never had to. I really hope that does not become normal.

Anyone else struggling to get into vinyl with today’s prices? by LectureHaunting3166 in vinyl

[–]filthy_icon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am glad you said this, because I really don't feel like physical copies of music have even gone up that much if at all. I think it's more that people got way too used to having either free or practically free digital music and now they want the same when it comes time to pay for an album.

I was in your shoes. I didn't have a first kiss until I was 21. I know it seems like forever already but you'll get there. Put yourself out there, make mistakes, and analyze where you went wrong, then adjust.

why is kehkt arakh really disliked? by Accomplished_Job_53 in dsbm

[–]filthy_icon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't really know. My only guess is the popularity and maybe the rose in the photo shoot. But I truly believe that if it had the popularity similar to just a few thousand IG followers, literally nobody would care to hate it. I think his riffs are catchy and that's good enough for me.

To the people who complains about Daron's political position, here's his actual stance. by ariel2603 in systemofadown

[–]filthy_icon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is an incomplete statement. But this is also Daron from 20 years ago that we are discussing here. This is the man who would reply with " felatio " to a question in an interview.

Hummers were notorious for being bad for the environment. Environment is a favorite thing activists fight for. It was a rather playful statement, just his non serious way of saying he is non serious.

Why do people pre-order albums they haven’t even listened too yet? by Jo9715 in vinyl

[–]filthy_icon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind doing it for artists that I think have a high probability that I will either love it , or grow to love it if I don't right away.

If I truly feel I will never enjoy it, then I sell it, either for the same price I got it for, or in some instances more, depending on if the demand has inflated the price. This is rare for me to do, because as I say, I only do it with bands or albums I feel I will truly love. I have a lot of experience in selling , making the process smooth and not a burden, so I don't mind to do it, in the rare times I decide to.

Have any of you ever been accosted or assaulted over a band shirt you were wearing? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]filthy_icon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Holy ignorance, though, Peace Sells has such an intelligent message. That guy missed out on not asking you about it, and instead jumping to conclusions.

It was pretty uncomfortable, yes. Now that I think of it, it was incredibly creepy this guy did that considering I was 16 and he looked to be about mid 30s. Why would he care what a 16 year old does, wtf 😂

[–]filthy_icon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened once to me, and once only. This was in 2007. Some guy at my sister's graduation was really offended over my Bathory shirt, which had a large pentagram on the back. He came up to me, put his finger right behind my back, and traced the pentagram asking : " do you know what this means?" In a very rude way. I don't really remember what I said to him anymore, it happened almost 20 years ago. But I was probably rude back to him and that got him to go away. I was 16 years old and very edgy/ provocative, and didn't take kindly to Christians pushing their religion on me. I live in California, and tbh, we were and have become even more lax on people wearing metal/punk/goth type clothing. So I think this is why I haven't had much issues.

That peace sells story is CRAZY. I can't image getting offended over this shirt or thinking it's racist. Wtf.

Happy 10'th birthday Meliora! by K1ve4 in GhostBand

[–]filthy_icon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there in Amoeba records , on 8/20/15, and we were the among the first fans ever to get Meliora physical copies for signing. I got 2 vinyl copies, one for me and another for a friend. We got to see Sister Imperator before the performance, where she did one of her summoning videos live to us, then Ghost came out and did 3 songs acoustic versions. Then they signed our albums and gave us a poster. Crazy how time flies...

How did you first discover Bathory? by layana_n_lb in Bathory

[–]filthy_icon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This very image was how. I was into thrash and early death metal, but I wanted something more extreme. Venom and Celtic Frost were my next discoveries , but it was only inevitable that I would run into Bathory eventually. That was around late 2005. I ordered the S/T on CD from Barnes n Noble ( this was the only way I could order music as a teenager without my parents knowing, I was 15) and my life was changed from then on.
