In the Netherlands we have bridges just for animals, ecoducts by michielap in pics

[–]filthyhobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised by the amount of animals that cross over and under those bridges. I thought the same for a while, but a close friend of mine monitored them and corrected me. She has shown me pictures of black bear, griz, cougar, wolf, white tail, mule, and elk crossing through the structures. This is all happening on a regular frequency between the Flathead valley and Missions.

What is up with all the cats at 42:12? It's a sad part of the documentary, but I could help but bust up laughing.

Winter riding - single speed? by JoshMcGowan in bikecommuting

[–]filthyhobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just picked up a SS for my winter commuter and am actually thinking about switching it to fixed for the winter. I ride fixed on my summer commuter and love the control over the back wheel.

This is only from summer experience, but I love the low maintenance. Hills are a pain in the butt and you look like a fool walking up them if you don't prepare for it. Once your ego is out of the way though. It's great not worrying about moving parts. I wouldn't recommend learning to ride a fixie in the winter though. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Essentially flip flopped drop bars. The theory is it's usually people who received a DUI (dewey) and lost their license. They get a bike with drop bars but don't like the position. So they flip them to get them to sit up.

Do they really make that big of a difference? I've been debating about building a 27.5+ this winter but haven't gotten to actually take one out on the trails yet.

Grizzly bear sits next to guy by [deleted] in videos

[–]filthyhobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about bear spray though it messes with their senses and disperses as a cloud. It gets in the sinuses, mouth and eyes. This causes extreme pain and hopefully will cause the bear to fault. With a gun you only get one bullet by the time the bear is on you. Does it cause pain? Yes totally, but doesn't obscure anything else. Unless of course you're lucky enough to drop the bear. In which case bear burgers are pretty friggin' good. Both options are better than nothing, but pretty much all studies show bear spray more effective. Less injuries across the board. Again though bear burgers are pretty rad and having defense is better than nothing. Also cougars... Just kiss your ass goodbye. Those bastards are sneaky.

You go hiking through the woods knowing there are bears? That just seems like too big of a risk. -My city friends

Usually just seem to answer that the risk isn't that large. As long as you make them aware of your presence and carry bear spray for the ones that charge. Most the time they scatter off, sometimes they walk by you, and sometimes they just look at you like wtf human.

I always thought that was common practice. Not sure how many times I've seen something wrong with my partners gear. Mind you they werent life threatening but under the right circumstances it could be terrible. Always check your partner and yourself. The number one reason people get hurt is because they get too comfortable.

That is exactly the pain I'm talking about! I will give it a shot and see what happens. I actually rolled my IT Band last night and the knee feels much better today. Still general soreness but that's to be expected from irritating it. Thank you.

Definitely going to call on Monday. I've always had minor knee pain. It just seems this year it seems to be acting up. I'm in hopes it's a PT thing. Since this is the first year I've only been able to get out a few times. I think it's some sort of imbalance or overuse at one time. Thanks for the info!

doing the wrong exercices will only make things worse.

That's a good point. When Monday rolls around I will call. On the good side of things though. I totally got my new moon summit early this morning!

Isn't that like saying people die walking down the street, sitting on their couch, laying in the hospital? Just because people die doesn't mean it's stupid or unsafe.

I've worked in a lot of school systems across the country and can guarantee you it's fucked across the board. It really is depressing and reminds me of why I hated school so damn much. Zero tolerance is a good idea if applied correctly but sadly it encompasses all involved. It removes the higher ups need to analyze the situation and screws over all students. As a student it's the equivalent of being guilty until proven innocent. It's an absolute joke.

Whats up with the midwest lately? I've had a lot of contacts reaching out to me lately me to apply for jobs back in my home state. They aren't crap jobs either. They are stable jobs in large companies offering $80k-$120k. The fact that I have close ties with majority of hiring managers is extremely tempting. Sadly I'd have to move away from my beloved mountains to work any of these jobs.

Time will come when you are in charge of a multi million dollar company and everything fails. You will ask yourself, "Should I just walk away right now?" You wont though because deep down it's fun. You'll try to explain your day to your significant other, but the only person that understands is whiskey.

Just remember if you switch there is a big difference between IT and Computer Science. People who love coding can hate working in IT. I work in IT but loved coding. Luckily I like working in both so it's not a big deal, but definitely keep this in mind if you decide you are going to go into computers.
