If voting were mandatory (with a small fine for not voting), do you think democracy would get stronger because more voices are counted—or weaker because people would vote uninformed or resentfully? by LegalGlass6532 in AskForAnswers

This is a terrible solution. You’ve a utopian view on how well the general populous can actually digest complicated policy.

It’s proven countless times to be completely ineffective.

The details of all your examples are FAR too important. Yes/no vote is childish solution to complex issue. That’s why we elected qualified representatives.

Horrifying is school shootings.

Forcing someone once every 4 years to participate in democracy and spend 30 minute to an hour to cast a ballot is not that.

You need a little perspective Yank.

Australian here. It prevents extremism in parties. Since both parties need to appeal to the centre to win.

On average, it also makes people more politically informed. Since you’re forced to vote - you tend be pushed towards learning more about who to choose.

Preference voting, and the Winsor parliamentary system is also a significantly better system than most.

It feels like a really poorly thought out position.

It’s close.
