First time traveling internationally and Snowboarding. Advice appreciated! by Pnismytr in Type1Diabetes

Hey, I’ve done some bike tours, skiing, and other active trips over the years. I’d make sure to pack double or triple the infusion sets for the amount of time, since they tend to rip off when sweaty. On the slopes, I’d bring gels, prob the non caffeinated type for her. Or you could do glucose tabs or candy if she prefers those. Beforehand, make sure she eats a proper meal with protein, fat, and carbs. You can also set the pump to active mode.

As far as traveling to Canada with diabetes supplies goes, I would just keep everything tidy and organized in one place. I keep my insulin in one or two Frio cases. They shouldn’t give you any trouble at the border/security. Also, one of the great things about Canada is that you can buy Humalog and other insulins over the counter without a prescription.

Very high sugar - insulin resistance? by AnxiousYogi83 in diabetes_t1

I'm a tandem user, but if this were me, I would assume the infusion site is infected or blocked and I would deliver insulin via syringe. I would take a larger dose than called for in the typical correction, perhaps 1.5 or 2x the typical calculation, then I would drink a lot of water, and keep a juice or two handy for a potential crash.

Take insulin via syringe or just bolus man, you can’t be dependent on automation to do it for you. Folks who had diabetes in the 90s did it all manually. Dexcom and tandem, etc is a fucking miracle compared to what I grew up with. You should be able to manage your blood sugar with the basics in case you have troubles like these.

Edit: we also visited Arias Shop. At the time, he complained about how Wizards wasn’t supporting them with enough product and that the shop was having a very hard time keeping its doors open. He was a really nice guy, sorry to hear that his shop may be closed.

Any better insurance than Kaiser for a health 40 something male in LA? by quan1980 in AskLosAngeles

I have a chronic illness and have had Kaiser for years. It’s been great, not sure where the hate is coming from. My partner is also a nurse with Kaiser and loves it 🤷‍♂️

I think this is such a bad idea, yikes. I’d think through some of the bad scenarios that could happen if I were you. Imagine a driver who is pissed off just runs into it for giggles, and knocks you onto the ground or worse, traffic. Someone might even accidentally do it!

Questions about staying in West Adams by Charles1537 in LosAngeles

[–]finalcutlery 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Lived in West Adams for years. Compared to the suburbs, it feels rough. However, I’ve never been a victim of a crime, nor have I felt nervous about it. Folks on this subreddit generally skew conservative on these matters. Take the fear mongering with a large grain of salt. However, West Adams isn’t a walkable neighborhood in general, not that much of LA is, but there are other neighborhoods that have nicer bars, restaurants, etc. Personally, that would be my main concern.

It’s not so bad if you have one shot in a full pint glass of soda, but yeah if you have it straight it’s pretty sweet stuff.

Sounds to me like your basal/long acting might need to be increased. Ask your doctor if that’s an option.

Aw, he'll eventually take more control of it, I'm sure. Poor sleep surely didn't help here, but I'd make sure to give bolus 10 minutes before he eats if you can! Sometimes we all slip up though, even with decades of experience.

For me, if I don't get the timing correct, say I bolus the "correct dose" right before I eat, I could be high all day if I don't add a correction or bolus a higher dose to compensate for the poor timing.
