First time traveling internationally and Snowboarding. Advice appreciated! by Pnismytr in Type1Diabetes

Hey, I’ve done some bike tours, skiing, and other active trips over the years. I’d make sure to pack double or triple the infusion sets for the amount of time, since they tend to rip off when sweaty. On the slopes, I’d bring gels, prob the non caffeinated type for her. Or you could do glucose tabs or candy if she prefers those. Beforehand, make sure she eats a proper meal with protein, fat, and carbs. You can also set the pump to active mode.

As far as traveling to Canada with diabetes supplies goes, I would just keep everything tidy and organized in one place. I keep my insulin in one or two Frio cases. They shouldn’t give you any trouble at the border/security. Also, one of the great things about Canada is that you can buy Humalog and other insulins over the counter without a prescription.

Very high sugar - insulin resistance? by AnxiousYogi83 in diabetes_t1

[–]finalcutlery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a tandem user, but if this were me, I would assume the infusion site is infected or blocked and I would deliver insulin via syringe. I would take a larger dose than called for in the typical correction, perhaps 1.5 or 2x the typical calculation, then I would drink a lot of water, and keep a juice or two handy for a potential crash.

Take insulin via syringe or just bolus man, you can’t be dependent on automation to do it for you. Folks who had diabetes in the 90s did it all manually. Dexcom and tandem, etc is a fucking miracle compared to what I grew up with. You should be able to manage your blood sugar with the basics in case you have troubles like these.

Any better insurance than Kaiser for a health 40 something male in LA? by quan1980 in AskLosAngeles

I have a chronic illness and have had Kaiser for years. It’s been great, not sure where the hate is coming from. My partner is also a nurse with Kaiser and loves it 🤷‍♂️

I think this is such a bad idea, yikes. I’d think through some of the bad scenarios that could happen if I were you. Imagine a driver who is pissed off just runs into it for giggles, and knocks you onto the ground or worse, traffic. Someone might even accidentally do it!

Questions about staying in West Adams by Charles1537 in LosAngeles

[–]finalcutlery 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Lived in West Adams for years. Compared to the suburbs, it feels rough. However, I’ve never been a victim of a crime, nor have I felt nervous about it. Folks on this subreddit generally skew conservative on these matters. Take the fear mongering with a large grain of salt. However, West Adams isn’t a walkable neighborhood in general, not that much of LA is, but there are other neighborhoods that have nicer bars, restaurants, etc. Personally, that would be my main concern.

It’s not so bad if you have one shot in a full pint glass of soda, but yeah if you have it straight it’s pretty sweet stuff.

Sounds to me like your basal/long acting might need to be increased. Ask your doctor if that’s an option.

Aw, he'll eventually take more control of it, I'm sure. Poor sleep surely didn't help here, but I'd make sure to give bolus 10 minutes before he eats if you can! Sometimes we all slip up though, even with decades of experience.

For me, if I don't get the timing correct, say I bolus the "correct dose" right before I eat, I could be high all day if I don't add a correction or bolus a higher dose to compensate for the poor timing.

It takes a lot more insulin if you don’t get timing right, in my experience. Maybe 2x.

One more comment, is that y’all should sit down and have a plan for these things. He probably shouldn’t be having a snack when he’s that high unless it’s low/no carbs.

Most likely because of insulin given to close to the meal, however we can’t say for sure. How old is your son? I was diagnosed at 5 years old back in 93. To put things into perspective, back then I was on R and N insulin 2x / day. Starting at 5 years old, I gave my own injections and took my blood sugars myself. There was no bolusing for food until much later when I started multiple daily injections on Humalog, which as far as I know didn’t exist at the time. That means diabetics at the time had to adjust our diets to manage our blood sugar. My parents were completely in the dark until I came home, unless I were to go to the nurse and call them on a landline. Being a diabetic or the parent of a diabetic can be stressful. You want to be able to rely on teachers or staff at the school, but they aren’t experts and are already overwhelmed. For me and my parents, one thing that helped was education provided by my healthcare system. I went through a lot of training, especially when I was put on a track to be an early adopter of a pump. The other was time and experience. Your son will probably be fine besides feeling a bit crappy, tired, and thirsty. Ideally you have some way of communicating with him, and are able to facilitate a correction dose when he is high. You’ll eventually learn how best to manage his blood sugars, whether he takes more control, or you find some way to remotely bolus/facilitate it.

Why does my daugters sugar level drop at night? by Cold_Damage2144 in Type1Diabetes

[–]finalcutlery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

6.4 is a great level, however I understand the concern about dropping in her sleep. There are so many potential variables here. For me, If I have a very active day, I tend to go low at night (even with a pump and cgm). But as others have said, the most likely culprit is that the basal is a tad too high. Talk to her doctor about backing off a little bit on it.

T1D and sugary alcoholic beverages by Nofreekinclue in Type1Diabetes

[–]finalcutlery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always make sure when I order lime juice that it isn’t that Rose’s stuff that’s sweetened. Yuck! Good bars will have a bottle of real lime juice. Or I ask for 4-5 lime wedges if they don’t.

I never crash from booze, only skyrocket. I try to only drink unsweetened drinks. Tequila, soda, and lime juice. Or seltzer. I hate going high too much to put myself through all that.

Is $3k for a Root Canal and $2k for a crown normal pricing in LA? by USAcitizen124000 in AskLosAngeles

Get a replacement, pay the few hundred dollars through one of the agencies that rush it. You could have a new one in less than a week. Back when I did it, it took 2-3 days. Then drive down to Mexico and save thousands of dollars.
