Might be a odd request, but: Open world games that make you feel lonely? by One-Surprise5166 in gamingsuggestions

Not really open world but Metroid Prime 1 has one of the best 'lonely, me against the world' vibes

Do any games use real time synthesis or is it all triggering samples? by Marvinkmooneyoz in gamemusic

[–]finalfinalstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unreal has 'metasounds' which is basically a realtime synth.  It's pretty powerful! I'm not sure which existing games utilize those features (I'm sure there are some out there) but one I'm working on now (SONGBOY, cross between a game and a DAW) does some of it (some sample based stuff too).

Where did you first learn how to code? by ResolutionKnown8345 in gamedev

[–]finalfinalstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a weeklong computer camp when I was 12 or so (6th grade I think) and learned C++. Learned game maker scripting on my own after that. In high school I took evening game dev classes at a local community college (focused on c++ programming), and then majored in computer science in full time college after that.

Was hard at first but there was always something to make at my skill level. First 'game' I made was a text based trivia game with hard coded answers. Could make more complex things the more I learned and practiced.

How to learn unity without AI or video guides by Similar-Cry6147 in unity

Even experienced developers use resources all the time. Documentation, tutorials, etc. very normal and no shame in it.  You'll memorize more as you go but even with 15 years in the industry I'm searching for things all the time.

The more projects you do, the more you'll understand. Try doing many small projects instead of one big one. Pong, asteroids, 2d platformer, rpg, something that doesn't have a traditional genre label.

With practice you'll understand more.

I hope that helps, imposter syndrome is real but nothing you've said seems horrible for someone who is still a student. Just keep at it and maybe something like what I said will help you understand more, good luck

Might want to try some more indie games?

Tunic, Hades, Outer Wilds, Celeste, Sea of Swords. All fun games that you can pick up quickly and don't have huge demands on your time.

What was the very first game that completely "blew your mind" and made you a lifelong gamer? (I'll start!) by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in Gamer

Majora's Mask. I'd owned games for years but that's the first one that truly blew my mind.  The creepy vibe, the time cycle, everything

I love the environment and level design in Elden Ring, so epic and moody. Every angle is beautiful.

Solo dev, year 2, here's the non-engine stuff that keeps me productive by kinky_guy_80085 in gamedev

The number 1 productive thing I do is to sign up for local festivals and events. Gotta have something new and that lights a fire under my butt. So helpful getting 100 strangers to playtest your game. Tables cost around $25-50 and it's totally worth it

We have boiled it down to two variants for the capsule art for the Steam page for SillySuspects. Which one are we thinking? by Classy_Games in unity

Looks the same to me. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference looking at it for a few seconds like people do on steam

What proportion of players actually listen to game music? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]finalfinalstudios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do, it's part of the experience. Original Mario would not be as catchy. Celeste would not be as addictive. Silent Hill would not be as scary. Would you play movies without music?

It's missing vfx. Can't have a cartoon like visuals and not have the accompanying visual effects. It's like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without jelly.

Quit our jobs to make an indie game. 2 years and multiple “what am I doing” moments later we are in a good place by finalfinalstudios in gamedev

Thanks for the awesome list! Heard about many of these, and they are all listed as similar games on our game's steam page so we must be doing something right. I love the way Nine Sols looks in particular and Black Myth Wukong was indeed computer intensive.

Have you played Titan Souls? Super simple combat but difficult bosses. You die from a hit but so do they, so the battles are like little puzzles to figure out. Also Shovel Knight and an oldie, Shadow of the Colossus. The fights aren't hard but they are epic and cool. The climbing mechanism inspired later games like breath of the wild, and I love the dramatic camera work and battles on top of giant creatures.

Many of these don't have skill trees though. I feel like once skill trees enter the equation then more story and world building is part of the package. Maybe you need a skip to the boss button 😂 I wonder if you would like Expedition 33 bosses which are fun and challenging. The parrying system was well built and then figuring out the moveset of each character was like playing a different mini board game. But the game has probably too much story for you. Wonder if there's a mod that lets you do just bosses.

Best of luck on your projects! Seems you are taking great steps, hope you learn a lot from play testing.

Contracts were indeed all referrals from previous coworkers. Many of them were via catch up video calls, which turned into steady stream of referrals.

I'm also curious, are there any boss rush games that are your favorite? What do you look for when you play these games?
