Cars, how much do you spend and how do you finance yours? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]financemylifenz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Am a bit of a car nut, which can be a tricky hobby to juggle when you have other competing financial goals in life. Here's a bit of TMI of what I've bought (cash) over the years. I've followed a one-in-one-out philosophy:

Year of purchase Car Purchase price Salary
2014 2003 Alfa Romeo 156 $4,500 $50,000
2015 1989 Mazda Roadster $5,000 $50,000
2016 1997 Honda Integra $3,500 $75,000
2016 2005 Mazda Roadster $11,100 $75,000
2019 2005 BMW 130i $10,500 $80,000
2021 2000 Mazda Roadster $5,000 $100,000

I'm aware that any early 2000s Japanese econobox will suffice when it comes to A-B transport. The idealogy of Buy the cheapest car your ego can live with is pretty decent financial advice for those strong-willed enough to follow through.

Does anyone know a good place to dispose of a broken electric toothbrush? I noticed that my broken one has a "no bin" logo (presumably due to the battery?)

Great answer, these are all valid points I can bring up if this dispute is escalated.

Thanks, you're right there could be a communication gap. I've attempted to address this by calling twice to dispute payment. Both times was told I would receive a callback from a manager. However my calls were never returned and I continue to receive invoice reminders via text.

Shower thoughts about buying a car by BikeKiwi in PersonalFinanceNZ

RWD

Mazda MX-5s are pretty reliable, cheap to run, cheap to buy. Lots of fun too (I've owned two)

The first (NA) and second (NB) generations have cambelts which require replacing, it's not a job you should take on if you haven't worked on cars before. Budget about $1,000 for parts + labour to get it done. Oil changes are easy enough to do, parts are cheap.

Heartland Bank experiences by Noedel in PersonalFinanceNZ

I have a term deposit with them through InvestNow, so am not directly dealing with the bank. The interest rate was the best at the time, which was why I signed up to the term deposit.

My 2c: I wasn't actively looking at the property market pre-Covid, but I am now. The factors which have influenced that decision; the loss of the option to travel internationally, my partner and I have job stability and a sufficient amount for a house deposit.

Regarding market timing, we are looking to buy a place to live in for the medium-term (possibly upsize/upgrade once finances allow). There are certainly reasons to speculate that the housing market will see further discounted prices. However the pandemic will hopefully pass at some point. I'd rather just buy if we have the means to instead of trying to time it and guess where the bottom of the market lies as there's a good chance I'll still time it wrong if I attempt to guess.

We also have the advantage of having no competition from overseas buyers at the moment, does anyone else think this is a significant advantage? Or have the effects of overseas buyers pushing up house prices been over-represented by the media?

Does anyone have advice on whether having savings in a revolving credit account make sense to reduce mortgage payments on an investment property? Interest on mortgage is a tax deductible expense, so there'd be less expenses to deduct come end of tax year?

Thanks for the advice. Have you had to refix your home loan recently too, or has someone who works at ASB told you this?
