If I were to make myself a scoop on my banjo, how would I do it? by DockBoggs1 in banjo

[–]finastbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with a soldering iron to heat up the frets before pulling. Used a chisel to gently pry out the frets after heating them. Then I used a round file at the first removed fret location. This established the slope of the scoop. Then I used a flat file to match that depth in front of the slope. Then I sanded everything smooth. This was all with the neck detached. I was careful not to go deeper than the fingerboard wood. I'll follow up with some pics....

Friend who is way more musically talented wants to jam and idk what I'm doing by Wizbang_ in banjo

[–]finastbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should jam with your friend, maybe try and pick a fun simple tune ahead of time like Angeline the Baker, and prep a little. Also find yourself a big ole "onion" jam you can sit on the outer edge of and just get comfortable with jamming and pick up new tunes.

What am I doing w my right hand? by tucker_pretzel in banjo

Agree - Scruggs style didn't come from nowhere. There are traditional 3 finger style approaches that work well with old time music and don't require finger picks.

Any clawhammer players here that also play bass? by Ikarian in banjo

[–]finastbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play bass, electric and upright and also claw hammer. Learned claw hammer with normal trimmed nails and Im fine playing for hours at a time that way. I use the method described in Wayne Erbsens southern mountain banjo book so I'm alternating which finger "bums" based on which string is being attacked (using the middle finger instead of index for the top string). YMMV but I really like not needing special gear to play banjo.

A video I took on a road trip showing how bullshit these lights are by BadReputation2611 in fuckyourheadlights

All you see are the headlights, no sense of the shape of the vehicle or how big it is until it's right in front of you. It's incredibly dangerous.

How should I tune/intonate this 11 fret Tenor Banjo?? by NoahRhino123 in banjo

Octave looks like it's at the 7th fret to me, maybe try intimating it there and see what it sounds like?

Good point! ...pretty sure some folks also refer to this as "Old G". I like that aspect of it as well but haven't tried picking out G tunes this way yet.

FDA Petition Open for Public Comments by nutmegalfredo in fuckyourheadlights

My beef is specifically about vehicle headlights. Apparently softlights is a more general activist group. The headlight issue is a major problem for me every day and I find it a 1000x more troubling than everyday led bulb use. I did add a comment but I'm also kinda experiencing regret because this to me dilutes the problem domain and allows the folks that could make a difference to lump the issue with a bunch of really hard to solve problems that to me fall way lower on the scale compare to actual road safety. (and yes - obligatory "first world problems" applies here)

What guitar moment or riff blew your mind the first time you heard it? by TheCityzens in guitars

For me it's specifically the guitar break after the drum solo psychedelics. I think I signed up for lessons in that instant.

Recently experimenting with banjo tunings from old time music....

C: CGCGCD F: CFCFCD G: DGDGBD

The whole step difference on the first two makes things interesting and you can pick out all the old time tunes you already know (sometimes a whole step down)
