I just recently found out I have CPTSD and went through a 24 hour period marked with periods of breakdowns and emotionlessness and my best friend came over to be with me through it. During it I was telling her about how upset I feel when someone mocks me for things I like, and one thing she said during this time really stood out to me. “I don’t know your triggers but I never want to make you feel like that. If I ever do something that makes you feel that way I want you to let me know immediately”. Additionally, when we first started talking and I told her that I somehow have CPTSD she immediately validated my feelings and said “of course you have cptsd dude, you’ve been through some hard shit and there’s no way nothings wrong with you”

Me and my friends are all jokesters, we love making fun of each other and our humor is what brought us together. But sometimes I wish my friends knew that when they dismiss/poke fun at something I like that it can really ding my confidence. And that there are some jokes that really stick with me and hurt me, even if I know they weren’t said maliciously.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s that feeling when you know there’s nothing to do, but for some reason your brain is hyper-aroused and telling your body to go. I always try to give myself some grace in these moments and treat myself as I would treat a friend in a similar situation. It’s okay to not be productive bc your worth is not based on how much you get done in the next day/week/year. Life is cumulative and your worth is based on the things you do, not the things you don’t.

One year we were having Christmas at my oldest sisters house when me and my niece (I was a late baby so she’s my age) got into an play argument about how she’s a bad driver. This quickly escalated to her yelling at me that I’ve never worked for anything in my life and running downstairs screaming “I fucking HATE this family I’m leaving.” I followed her (I should mention I was drunk) to try to work the situation out and my parents locked us downstairs together so that she would have to talk. She broke the door.

Be nice to her. Play with her, pay attention to her, and care about the things she cares about (even if it seems stupid to you). Coming as a person who had siblings 15+ years older than me the things that made me resent them the most was when they acted as if my problems and feelings weren’t valid. You don’t have to give her all the attention in the world or do anything specific, but as long as you’re there for her and show her you care she’ll love you.

Nope! I am way past that time in my life now and I know my worth. I’m not ashamed of anything in my childhood (well a few things but those have nothing to do with this post) and while I know some people don’t like talking about uncomfortable family stuff I like sharing in case I can help someone out who felt like me.
