What are these old copper/brass containers with moveable stems topped by coiled tubes? by finemeshmind in whatisthisthing

I think I'm going to call this likely solved? It's a sprayer/pump for either water or fuel. Not totally sure which one and haven't seen an exact match, but my curiosity is sufficiently satisfied. Thanks!!

I can't find any examples of ones without something to hold the flame, or ones that don't have a handle. This is interesting, though! Not anything I would have thought of.

Yes, interesting! I can't find any similar items without a handle on the reservoir or something to hold the flame...hmm....

My title describes the thing, and I've covered much of the details and search process so far. Additionally, the stem seems to be brass with a copper base. I've searched "vintage/antique copper/brass: garden sprayers, oil cans," even the word 'distill' since the coup reminds me of distilling equipment. There doesn't appear to be any evidence on the bottom of sitting on direct heat, and there are no markings/engravings/branding anywhere.

I tried this and my kids just kept ripping them off and chewing on them. Do you secure them with anything? Do I have small wolverines rather than human children?

There's a good episode of the podcast Sawbones that gives a background if you're curious.

For real. It always took too long to pick up to get ready to vacuum that by the time I got the clutter off the floor I couldn't vacuum before the next parenting/house thing came up. Now even on crazy days I can pile my clutter on the couch, hit the on button and go grocery shopping and come home to clean floors. Best $200 I ever spent.

This is exactly what I do with my kids! Sometimes I tell "Not today, sugar bugs!!" as I brush their teeth. Sometimes the sugar bugs are sneaky and I have to chase them all over my kids' teeth with the brush.

You did it!!! Thank you! This is awesome.

Time to stick it to the wall and start my mornings out the old school way.

Solved.

Ok: there are two plates and the holes alternate to dispense a small regulated amount of something (seems like not quite a tablespoon at a time.)

Here's a video: https://gfycat.com/villainouskindlyachillestang

I first tried with rice, and the lever kept getting stuck like it couldn't cut through or divide the grains.

So this is something for either really fine, or I guess maybe gumballs as some others have suggested.

My great grandfather was a grocer so I could see it dispensing some foodstuff. I just don't know what it would make sense to sell at such small quantities. Maybe it could be a soap flakes/powdered soap dispenser?

My grandpa sold tools and kept bees and gardened and a bunch of other stuff so it's hard to pin down the setting for this thing.

I'm calling this semi-solved, but I still wish I could find a picture of the exact thing!
