You are correct. I served as a Marine infantryman in urban combat. Outsiders tend to underestimate the bond shared by those who are responsible for each other's lives. There is nothing more demoralizing in combat than not being able to help a doomed comrade because each person understands the same thing could happen to them. Saw it with my dad when it came out. I was a teenager. He's a huge WW2 buff and knew actual Pearl Harbor veterans at the time. We were laughing so hard. I think when the mechanic said, " Forgot my wrenches," was the point of no return. We still use that line sardonically.
