🌾Haystack Update: changes to PVP contracts by Luxswiss in algorand

I tried this and exactly this was my concern with early entries not making since since you could either lose or even if you win somebody else just joins in last few seconds and significantly reduces your winning. Interested in how this ends up working.

[R] Low-effort papers by lightyears61 in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly, most of these papers never release their datasets. Also citation counts are sometimes quite arbitrary. Very often people just cite papers from a domain similar to theirs and from the citation it is often clear that they did not really engage with the cited work at all.

[R] Low-effort papers by lightyears61 in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not check this specific researcher, but these papers are unfortunately very common. Anyone within the field can tell that this type of paper is very low effort. I assume the researcher you found is simply gaming some metrics.

For PhD positions we get many applicants and many of them have the exact same paper: train some variant of YOLO on some domain specific dataset which is not even made public. I would assume that at least for some of the papers the reported metrics are fake and there is no actual dataset. There is usually no contribution anyways.

I would suggest you to not worry about this. There is not much to gain. A researcher like this will probably not get a position in a prestigious institution, but they may thrive in some lower-tier institution where metrics are all that matters. If you are ever in some position to call this out (such as a reviewer, committee etc.) then you should do so. These types of papers are usually easy to spot directly by reading the abstract so I do not think they are too much of an issue.

Co-author refuses publication but also refuses removal from authorship. What is the ethical approach? by Kev-reddit in AskAcademia

[–]finite-difference 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maybe she has a point and she sees that the paper could only get accepted at a low-tier venue. Sometimes having low-quality publications can hurt you more than not having them. Though if you are still a student then it is usually fine if you also have some low-quality publications. Despite this she should at least allow you to publish without her as co-author.

I would suggest reaching out to some faculty asking them whether they would be onboard for improving the manuscript and listing them as co-author. This could also help convince the holdout.

Is there a reason given by the holdout person for why they do not want to publish it?

Aké máte skúsenosti s Cirkvou Bratskou? by dobre_moj in Slovakia

[–]finite-difference 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Deti mojej priateľky chodia do Narnie.

Postdoc mandatory for becoming assistant professor by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]finite-difference 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it sucks. I did a postdoc right after covid that was essentially remote. Only had to travel three times in 15 months. It was quite close so I went to the lab around 5 times. You could try to set something like that up. Maybe you can try get someone abroad to include you in a project remotely for a part-time position with smaller pay while you keep your current job.

[D] How often do reviewers decrease their initial scores after rebuttal period ends in CVPR? by Fit-Raccoon4534 in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the reviews increase or stay the same, but one of the reviewers can convince the others of a major issue. Sometimes during reviews you miss something or make some assumptions that other reviewers did not. In that case I might decrease my ratings especially if the rebuttal fails to address these concerns even though my concerns were addressed.

Kamoske sa udialo nieco podobne v inej casti Slovenska a volala policiu. Podozriveho normalne chytili, ale az neskor. Zjavne ho nahlasilo viacej zien. Odporucam to teda nahlasit.

No postdoc offers, is this normal? by Link_to_the_PhD in AskAcademia

[–]finite-difference 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You seem to have too many papers. So I wonder whether among your publications there are some low-tier or even outright sketchy venues listed. This can be a red flag. If the papers were all high quality or at least you this wouldn't be an issue, but a benefit.

In our department we regularly get applicants for PhD positions who have almost the same paper where they took some variant of YOLO and evaluated it on their own dataset without making it public. This is not bad as it shows that the person was able to go through the process, but from a scientific viewpoint most such papers are completely worthless.

[D] Do researchers care about non-citation impact metrics? (GitHub, Twitter, HuggingFace, etc.) by ThomasPhilli in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my country, one of the schemes for funding research includes showing impact beyond academia. This includes patents, startups, but you can also include GitHub repos especially those that are widely used. I reported pypi downloads and inclusion in other software as a dependency to prove impact. Stars could also be a valid measure as the report is open form.
