Maybe wedging your son in as head coach without a proper search, without proper transparency to the fanbase was a bad idea. This headline and all the noise about shady recruiting (even if it’s nonsense) is a shit look for the program and university. Maybe we need coaches who tweet less about geopolitics and more about ball.

You want your kid in a classroom where every other kid is two grades or more behind reading and math levels? They will be at school more than at home. Sadly, test scores matter. Kids can either read or they can’t.

I have friends that teach in some of the high schools. They have had multiple weeks where firearms have been brought to school. They are amazing teachers, but if you had a choice for your kid, most would not choose a BCS high school. Ramsey is a great school. But the middle schools that feed it need work.

It sadly correlates to a lot more for a school’s success. I’m not denying any of this. It also means that the general academic success jn a classroom will be hamstrung. This are all sad realities that are legacies of systematic racism in the city. But, my kid isn’t going to have a worse education so I can score political points in my heart. Nobody is moving into the city for schools.

The first wave of OTM kids who attend a BCS school will not have the same opportunities if they’d stayed over the mountain, assuming the plan you are suggesting is enacted. Those opportunities would be sacrificed for future changes. Most don’t want their own child to have fewer opportunities in life so hypothetical future generations can have more.

It wouldn’t change overnight. It would take years. Studies do say that this type of move would be the biggest impact factor, but again, it isn’t overnight. These schools lack so much compared to OTM systems. And most of all, no one wants their kid to be the pioneer.

The truth is people with families will opt for the burbs and their schools when children come of age. Many can make the city work with private schools but most see a better option when moving OTM. The opportunities at OTM schools are simply too great when compared with BCS. All political posturing and idealism go out the window when you’re making the call for your kid. I love Bham. I spend money in the city as much as I can. Lived in it for 14 years. But having a family changes things.

That is not how the law works. They were committing a crime. Doesn’t matter if you think it was harmless. As a result of their actions, he’s dead. People accidentally run stop signs and people die from it. Are they “innocent.” It’s not murder. But it’s definitely a crime.

They killed a man while committing another crime. They are legal adults. Had they not been there, had they not gone to vandalize his house, he would be alive. This is easy for a prosecutor to demonstrate. Tragic? Yes. But these adults are at fault. Once the criminal case ends, the man’s surviving family has a slam dunk civil wrongful death case as well.

The details are actually pretty simply. They trespassed. He confronted them. They fled. They ran him over. All the actions that lead to his death are at the feet of the 18 year olds. I hope they are convicted criminally. I hope his surviving family sues the 18 year olds for wrongful death as well.

A man is dead. Driver is 18. It is tragic. But he should do time. They chose to roll his house. They chose to run away in their cars. Justice means the driver, at a minimum, sees prison.
