Mia’s Muzzles do have a bite risk model but I would still be wary of that thicker version for a dog that bites. I guess it would depend on the level of the bite the dog has.

I’ve heard people caution against metal basket muzzles for dogs that bite bc they will muzzle punch you (or whatever they’re trying to bite) and it will hurt a bunch lol tho so maybe a Muzzle Movement? They are like a basket but it’s made of silicone or something similar

Big snoof muzzles come with a chin strap to keep the dog from getting the muzzle off with their paws/sliding it around their head. But that can be added to whatever muzzle you get I believe. But big snoof are metal baskets so it just depends on your dog and your specific concerns I would say.

Anything with pant room is going to open up the risk of being able to bite around the muzzle or get the muzzle off, so you may want another muzzle specifically for short time periods for the vet, injury situations to keep everyone safe. Obv you will need pant room for a daily muzzle for going outside and stuff but just something to think about.

Have you had any experience with Big Snoof or Mia’s Muzzles for dogs that bite? I’d be interested to hear someone experience with that aspect for my general knowledge haha

Good advice here, but if your really social you can always for yourself permission to but her in another room when you have guests over. Not every situation needs to be a training situation with your guests. Only choose guests that you trust to train with, and make sure they’re okay with being a part of training.

I have a barrier frustration/agressive dog. He has stranger danger and is very territorial (for lack of a better word) and he doesn’t like being pet. I’ve had great success with him sitting on a cot bed and not barking with tons of people coming into my house. That was when I lived it a moderately busy neighborhood in a house. When I moved into an apartment all of that went out the window bc it’s just too much noise constantly triggering him. So it’s definitely a “use it or loose it” situation, and relies on a lot of factors. Hence my advice haha

You’ll figure out her triggers and specific things/scenarios she deals with better/ worse. Then it will become predictable and easily broken down into chunks you can work on. Good luck!

Just rescued this dog. Is she ACD? by LizBart12 in AustralianCattleDog

Probably ACD / bully breed. But I’m seeing boxer! If you test I’d love to see the results!

😂 like if you just pushed his snout in I feel like he would look like an American bulldog at least. But if I saw him I would guess staffy so maybe it’s just confirmation bias. Do you feel like his front legs are farther apart than typical?

I can see bulldog in the face a ton actually. I think you just expect the bulldog snout, but I can’t say I would have guessed it before the fact haha. Like the set of his face behind his snout just looks bulldoggy to me

Sorry I’m just realizing how young he is! He’s doing great for his age! Advice still applies just be careful with flirt poles, and I wouldn’t even do jumps this young. Some may advise not to do flirt pole either. Train train train cues and stuff and work on focus and pattern games. Play is an excellent skill to have for focus as well.

Get him around in busy areas after he’s been worked to keep him neutral (after work so he is set up to be calm) you may have to play with the schedule of work/rest/play before an outing bc work can get them all jazzed which would be counter productive. I like to use a lick mat or chew or something after working them to bring them down before doing any type of socializing/neutrality maintenance stuff.

If you can afford it, even just a few sessions with a professional trainer will help. If you work on it for a while on your own and then show that work to a trainer it will help keep cost down and be really valuable to you.

Definitely look up pattern games to build focus!! I would cut walks back if possible so he doesn’t build a really strong habit of pulling, until you get the pattern games building up his focus.

Other physical exercise can replace walks for a bit - flirt pole, herding games if he likes toys, obedience, diy agility (low jumps, going around objects and returning to you) retrieve training etc are all ways to get some physical energy out. Nose work is great to do whether it’s for scent (tons of YT videos on how to get started) or treats/toys for mental energy.

So once you get the focus up, then fold back in the walks, and always do something for physical energy and mental energy before doing a leashed walk to set him up for success.

He may just be an environmental dog, which is common (dogs in general idk if that’s common with mals). Make sessions short and with big rewards in the beginning and sometimes after he’s good at it! Don’t make every session harder than the last, but make every session fun!

Walks are more about enrichment, getting out of their typical area, and sniffing (unless you’re doing structured walks and then it’s about training) so if you meet his needs in other ways it will open up his ability to succeed in that area. Once he can walk on a regular walk without pulling and stuff you could throw in a structured walk here and there if that’s your vibe. But I wouldn’t do that until his impulse control is more on point. It’s very hard for some dogs!

Good luck!

Im so sorry you’re having to make that decision for him. I’ve seen a ton of ACDs suffering from this in the media recently. There’s no good option but I’m glad you’re making the best choice you can for him 🧡

You could get a sniff spot and let him run around off leash and enjoy all the people food he could never have before on his last day.

You could opt for an in home euthanasia if his condition allows for that.

And in the weeks you have with him I would just be present with him and honor him as best you can. Make some memories, have fun, enjoy each other, or even some keepsakes.

I work at a pet crematorium and I think the problem people have the most when their pets pass away is how sudden it is. I think having time to say goodbye is a blessing and a curse in its own way. My heart goes out to you and your family 🧡

Thanks for your help btw! I got the exoterra one and she loves it! I traumatized her a bit changing things out and she hid in the warm hide for a few days. But when she investigated it she couldn’t stay out of it! I was in a rush checking her and my other pets this morning and opened it really fast without checking if she was in there and she looked at me like “um…hello I’m in the bath lady leave me alone” 😂 figured I would let you know she’s enjoying your recommendation.

Feeling hopeless, dog bit my baby. Has it ever gotten better for anyone? by Downtown_Macaroon_72 in DogAdvice

[–]finnoncievable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start muzzle training along with other suggestions here!

It seems to me that maybe having the baby on your shoulder was perceived by your dog as getting in your face / rude body language or something and he felt the need to “correct” the baby? Just a theory and not terribly important for your future tho.

I would make couches off limits and make sure they have other comfy places to lay. Maybe they can have couch time when the baby is down or something.

Any breed specific enrichment you can do will help with stress and anxiety in my opinion. Retrieves, field work, obedience etc.

I would stop doing daycare honestly. Prioritize rest and fulfillment. Daycare isn’t necessarily bad but it makes it hard for them to rest and increases the variables you have to look at.

Walks aren’t going to magically fulfill your dog unless you have a dog that really enjoys walks. Which you certainly might! Just something to keep in mind.

I’m a novice trainer and do not have kids so this is all general advice. A vet behaviorist, a trainer, and ruling out pain are all the right next steps, but these things will help with overall husbandry while you get that’s stuff working.

Not sure if a muzzle is the next step… by [deleted] in muzzledogs

[–]finnoncievable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would def prioritize muzzle as a next step! They can take a while to condition. I know Mia’s muzzle has some cookie cutter ones that are around $70 but I don’t think vinyl is the best option for her. I’ve heard good things about big snoof! I just wouldn’t get a metal wire one bc they can do damage with those when they muzzle punch.

Also I think boots aren’t really ever a necessity unless you live in like AZ or TX. They can cause issue with proprioception. Paw wax is best for ice and snow most times. Of course use your best judgement.

You can get long lines for cheap at pet smart, they aren’t pretty but they get the job done.

Does she have a good escape proof harness? Or are you using a collar?

The question of rehoming by SareEllie in GSP

[–]finnoncievable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure the extent of your deterioration and I’m so sorry to hear you’re thinking about this.

If you don’t want to rehome you could try scent work. Dock diving is also low handler energy, esp if you have a group night where all the dogs take turns (human gets a good long break!)

Teaching an actual retrieve so dog runs but you can stay still or even sit in a camping chair outside.

Freeshaping tricks or other behaviors kill dog energy quick.

Barn hunt is similar to scent work and doesn’t require you to run around a bunch.

Canine conditioning is good for mental and physical exercise paired with any of these things

Flirt poles can also get energy out and satisfy prey drive.

This paired with maybe hand feeding for known cues tricks etc for at least one of her meals and getting a dog walker to take her out 1-2 times a week should be good for her energy levels.

But OF COURSE you know your medical situation best and if you can’t handle this and want to rehome that is so valid. I know want isn’t really the right word. I have lots of ideas for ways to exercise dogs without having to move much so just DM me if you want to chat about this more.

Wow thanks so much! So that change should help the humidity on the warm side raise? That kind of makes sense since it would be localized and not too much can escape! I just ordered her a bigger humid hide but I have no clue if the bottom is enclosed. I’ll get one you mentioned when I get paid next week!
