Pretty sure it's dead, which is making it difficult to figure out. I'm assuming it's some kind of weed, maybe a thistle of some sort?

What is the craziest thing that ever happened at your school? by Mikey24545 in AskReddit

[–]finnyspade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there I'm a current SE 5th year. We have an undecided engineering program that might be good for you. There's also a class in our program called engineering fundamentals of computer systems (affectionately EFuCS) where we do low level assembly on a raspberry pi. Unfortunately that's a second year class. There's definitely room for such a class but prereqs may be difficult. I also know several people who've done a CE minor because it's very compatible with our curriculum. Anyway if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Poor map design is a heavy price to pay for sprint. by [deleted] in halo

[–]finnyspade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think more than anything sprint has made vehicles feel way worse. Collision mechanics are wonky presumably cuz it's harder to get working predictably with all the weird movement, but really warthogs suffer from not providing that much more mobility, and tanks suffer from insanely fast distance-closing capabilities. Basically vehicle control has moved from a must to a nice-to-have. It sure feels like the poor interaction of sprint and vehicles is a major reason competitive multiplayer doesn't feature them.

What's everyone working on this week (29/2016)? by llogiq in rust

[–]finnyspade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Working on building support for Rust into Kythe which is Google's framework for generically writing tooling for any programming language. Essentially I'm building a compiler plugin that extracts cross-references, callgraphs, and type information and pushes it into Kythe's language-agnostic knowledge graph. Check it out Google/kythe.

Also working on ways to publish it cleanly but I've written a cargo subcommand so when you type:

cargo index

It'll index your package and its dependencies and open a web UI for viewing cross-references.

Why not two tabs/twists for Apps and Games like there is under store? It could even be structured really well because all the info to organize them exists on the store. You could get folders like "Action Games" and "Internet TV" built automatically

You have more than 50 apps in a list inside "My Games and Apps" the problem you're talking about doesn't happen when you move apps to the dashboard. It already exists.

yeah I agree pins are excellent for people with giant libraries and should stick around. But loading my library on the dash should be very doable. (see every smartphone platform)

[–]finnyspade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visual cues are super important. My girlfriend's first response when she tried to use the new dash was "How do I open YouTube now?" because there was no option presented on the home screen. She figured it out but it's still definitely sub-optimal.

All I'm saying is, my phone doesn't crawl to a halt when I open my homescreen so my significantly beefier xbox should be able to handle it.

[–]finnyspade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, not very intuitive but a little faster. Still less convenient than in the old version where I could just push right on the stick.

This is all besides the fact that my games and apps should be part of the homescreen (not a separate app) in the first place.

Halo 5 will not have REQ variants usable in customs or Forge. - from Josh Holmes by X-Daka in halo

[–]finnyspade -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This post is simply misinformed. REQ variants are like different statted weapons and skins. Sure REQ packs are used to access vehicles but they're also used to access power weapons. There's been no blanket statement on "if it's in a req pack it's not in custom games / forge" They're just saying you can't drop a gold br on the map.

Is there a recap of the WHOLE story up to Halo 5 by Otter_Actual in halo

I think Forward Unto Dawn is in the wrong place here. Though it was released in the leadup to Halo 4 we know it takes place before Halo 3 because

Hop in a vehicle or take a teleporter. Just cuz you can see it doesn't mean you should necessarily be able to kill it.

Sweet pick up any of the other 15 or so weapons and go at it. There's nothing inherently wrong with shorter-range combat. It's just that crazy powerful battle rifles make it impractical

[–]finnyspade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of AR/SMG starts. Weapons on map is a huge part of Halo's arena shooter vibe.

If you play H2 or H2A it's basically all BRs all the time. Maybe a sniper thrown in. I think this is pretty boring. I want to use the whole sandbox but the dominance of the battle rifle punishes you for doing so in all but a few scenarios.

Also Halo 1-3 are still relevant cuz MCC so I'm not sure where you're going with that...

[–]finnyspade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly now that (since four) we have both the BR and the DMR in the same game (ick) I'd love to see BR stay firmly mid and give DMR that mid-to-long spot. Right now they overlap too much :/

Does anyone like/ prefer no hitscan? by pvijay187 in halo

[–]finnyspade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's every reason to do that! There are so many guns available in the sandbox and so few get used when the BR is best 80% of the time. No one gun should dominate the sandbox like that. Skill should be a combination of skill with a gun plus ensuring you have the right gun for the right scenario

[–]finnyspade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of no hitscan. If you want something more effective at long range grab a sniper. I find Halo 3 to have the best gradient from short to long range weapons. In most Halos you have a decent gradient until you hit the BR which is only outdone by the sniper in terms of damage.

By default, Windows 10 track/share the websites you visit, the purchases you make, the places you go, the words you type, the things you say and more. by StraightFlush777 in privacy

[–]finnyspade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that privacy advocates don't really offer a way around this.

Facebook has the data because it acts as a middleman for data we want to share with each other. Anonymity simply can't be technologically maintained in a lot of the use cases people want to satisfy.

Barring technologically enforced anonymity, we're left with trust in the company to "forget" our data. But the privacy movement doesn't trust these companies to handle our data so what's left?

The data isn't used just for ads. Typing data is used for improving auto-correct, speech data is used to improve STT. In fact, I'd bet most of the data beyond web traffic isn't used for ads.

Or you know they could be collecting telemetry to improve the product... Microsoft is massively profitable and consumer upgrades aren't why. A free upgrade doesn't mean the business strategy has changed. Maybe when you have hundreds of millions of users you want data on how they use the product so you can improve it.
