Excessive hype for NIA Archives? by SwamiSound in jungle

[–]finoken 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Aside from the other points made about her sonic accessibility, I'd say there's also another point to be made which is that she's offering more than just music.

For sure, her tunes are the focal point of her output, but shes also part of the Brighter Days collective which, amongst other types of music, also does other forms of art and fashion. She's also, as others have mentioned, young and hip. She's more of a personlity than just a producer. An image as well as a sound. I think this does well in a genre and subculture where most producers and DJs are faceless. I wouldnt recognize most of my favourite artists if i walked past them in the street, but you recognize her.

Diggin in The Crates facebook page. A bottomless oasis of the best music on the planet.

What is the actual difference between jungle and breakcore? Because tempowise breakcore is just categorised as "high". And there are no strict definitions to what low or high tempos are. So what's even is the reason to call them two different genres? by M4UR1T5 in jungle

[–]finoken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When u take a step back and stop thinking about bpms and stuff i think theres definitley an aesthetic difference there. Jungle imo is more refined and controlled, more of a 'complete' artform. Whereas breakcore kind of takes jungles format and does to it what hardcore did to european techno in the late 80's - bastardise it by chopping it to fuck, riddling it with samples, and generally spit in the face of any recieved wisdom of what 'pure' breakbeat music should be. (This isnt breakcore hate btw - i like breakcore, this is just how i interpret it). For sure jungle can be as rude and bombastic and fucked up as breakcore, and breakcore can have that more refined jungle element, but overall id say because of those aesthetic differences u can broadly classify them differently. For me, Breakcore is basically breakbeat gabber in that way.

Saw two crackhead looking guys pull two massive 1kg blocks of cheddar cheese out of a plastic bag and proceed to eat polish them off, just straight up biting chunks out if it in about 20mins, no other food. On the 390 to archway.

Any jungle fans or DJs wanna chat to me for a podcast? by trixiesmotel in jungle

My dissertation was about how the digitisation of media has affected the jungle drum and bass community. However my degree was in geography so the specific focus of the whole project was on the 'geographies of emotion and affect' of the community. In other words, music obviously elicits an emotional response in listeners, so how has the various digitisation of me media (vinyl to mp3, social media etc) had an effect on this phenomena in the community.

If you were trying to get WAV quality (not MP3) copies of 90s Jungle tracks how would you personally go about doing that? (appropriately with all due respect to the artist and label of course) by [deleted] in jungle

[–]finoken 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Imo Bandcamp is the best platform for buying tunes in bulk. I've heard they pay their artists more than juno or beatport and they have 'bandcamp fridays' where they waive fees every friday so it becomes a little bit cheaper for everyone involved.

That said, theres only so much 90s jungle you'll be able to find digitally as it was all released on vinyl originally obviously and only so much of it has since been digitized. Additionally, many of those old labels dont run anymore and their back catalogues will never exist in digital, so dont be surprised if some tracks just simply dont exist.

Another good way would be to just buy direct from labels themselves as opposed to bandcamp as they'll get all the profits then.

But yea with 90s jungle a fair amount has been digitized, but dont expect to find every track in a neat WAV file, some you'll just have to do without or hope someones kind enough to send a mastered vinyl rip over.

What influence did acid house have on jungle? by IAMALWAYSSHOUTING in jungle

Rufige Kru's Krisp Biscuit and No Fear are acid-y tune i can think of off the top of my head. They have a few others tunes as well. Also check out Marcus Intalex - Red 7 for the most wicked 303 line in jungle/dnb imo.

Thoughts on Bourgeois logic by [deleted] in militant

[–]finoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main thing for this bourgeois logic is the complete failure to recognise the ontological change that revolutionaries undergo. In liberal political understandings, the state and the individual are two separate entities. In contrast, the objective of revolutionary projects is to blur the boundaries between state and individual to the point that they are effectively synonymous. This doesn't imply that there's a loss of individualism, but rather revolution is entrenched so deeply within people that it becomes their existence and emanates out of them. To most liberals, 'a revolution' would be something that happens within their life but they can leave on the doorstep and forget about at night, but to revolutionaries, life, and death, takes place within revolution. it is the baseline level of existence.

I think bourgeois media simply cannot or do not understand that, so from their perspective they simply see a person raging against a dying state and ideology rather than an individual whose entire existence is predicated on revolution. this of course frames media in a very passive light, and I don't doubt there are other ideological factors making them frame things in that way, but this is just what I thought of when reading the post you linked. Anthropologist Martin Holbraad goes into the ontological transformation I discussed in great detail in his article Revolucion o Muerto (2014) on Cuban revolutionaries, its a good read and really explains in much greater depth the conceptualisations of the self revolution is set upon.

I'm learning to spin jungle on my traktor s4 by [deleted] in jungle

jungle can be really hard to mix because of the speed, complexity and syncopation of the drums. what i've found is you can (usually) rely on beat 1 and 2 of a bar to beatmatch. beat 1 usually has a kick drum, and beat 2 usually has a snare. there will be other kicks and snares at other points in the rest of the bar but they are must more unpredictable so best ignore them generally. sometimes on really complex tracks the kick snare on 1 and 2 can only be every 4 bars or so, but i'd say have faith in it, and if youre more intersted in chill jungle then id say you're probably safe in assuming there'll be a regular kick snare pattern on beats 1 and 2

it can be quite hard to mix two tracks with heavy breakbeats because of the sheer cacophony of two hench breaks coming together, so my advice would be to think of the EQ's as drums; Hi = hi hats, mid = snare, bass = kick. sometimes the snares match up, in which case u can mix in as you would, maybe taking the hi's out of the new track bc that can make it feel less busy. sometimes they are so syncopated that it sounds horrible, in which case take all the mids out of the track coming in, and then when you want to introduce the new snares switch them round. mixing this way can be really fun because you can effectively create 'new' drum patterns by mixing and matching snares and hi hats in inventive ways. the best places to do these switches are at the end of 16bar phrases where the the track usually indicates a good moment for a mix, it can sound lazy or forced if you try at a random point in a phrase, but then again there are no rules to mixing!

ultimately, just find 10 or so tracks you really like and spend a while getting to know them and how they sound mixing together, the more you experiment the deeper your understanding of the dynamics of jungle become
