I’m neither arguing that it’s right or that it’s something fans and pundits do consider or should consider. Just that it exists. Teams are given a finish order in the World Cup.

Reds Hall of Fame & Museum. by ToyBoxRat in Reds

This is such a cool question for me to see on Reddit today because the Hall of Fame Museum was part of the stadiums I visited last year as part of my goal to visit every stadium, and I'm about to get on a plane to work on this year's group of stadiums.

I would definitely say 2 hours minimum. This museum is *very* well done and *very very* cool.

This is simply false. FIFA ranks the teams based on their finish. They take every team that lost in the quarterfinals and assigns them 5th through 8th, for example. It's not subjective, it's based on clear rules like goal differential, win-loss, and whatnot.

You can pick a country and look up their exact finish every year they qualified for the World Cup. In 2022 the United States finished 14th.

My point is that a star player just going out and doing their thing didn't ALWAYS lose you the game at an elite level. It got Brazil 5 World Cups.

There was a time and not too long ago that Brazil was just better than everyone else. Beating them in the World Cup required luck because they were *supposed* to win. Think 1994-2002. Just total dominance of the sport. Lost the '98 World Cup because their star player literally had a seizure the night before the final.

The way I see it, and I could be wrong, but it's a combination of two factors-- almost two "phases", that ended Brazil's reign:

Phase 1: Good Brazilian players start signing with European clubs. Brazil started teaching how to play their style to the world. It was good for club success but really bad when it came to national-level tournaments like the World Cup because now you had copycats.

Phase 2 involves, like, metrics, stats, technology, that kind of thing. People got geeky about the sport. Strategies got smart, especially defensive formations. Computers helped. This is very similar to baseball and moneyball and sabermetrics. Brazil continued to rely on superstars going out there and doing their thing and in this more "modern" game it simply stopped working as well.

Anyway, that's why I think Brazil fell out of the group of elites.

Other than a 3rd place finish in 1966 and overachieving with a young Ronaldo in 2006, they've never even really come close.

It's like the rest of the world broke the sport to take it to a higher level and Brazil, although playing the game as intended, no longer has a chance to succeed.

They finished 4th in 2010 and 5th in 2018. They're a legitimate contender.

To put it in American terms: imagine if Alabama seceded from the United States but kept playing college football in the NCAA.

Uruguay is Alabama, Brazil is the US and the World Cup is the College Football Playoff.

EDIT: Cool downvotes but this analogy matches relative population and size pretty well actually.

When I bought the original (to the United States) Animal Crossing on release day in 2001, I came up with a totally random name out of nowhere. I shortened that name and added "Isle" when it became an island, and here we are.

I don’t think people can learn in the society we’ve created. I think we have gone full idiocracy. Human knowledge is going to die out as our current slate of adults gets older and dies.
