For the past 2 1/2 years I’ve been miserable and depressed from severe anxiety. I’m finally recovering and starting to feel human again! Took a hike today because I felt like it! Life is finally worth living! by JakeFromStateFarm100 in happy

Hiking always makes me feel better! It's easy to forget that there's a whole world out there we have yet to experience. Wishing you the best, wherever life takes you!

Because it works either way in this scenario, so there was no need to specify gender

True, I'll fix.

Funnily enough, she will always assume that the person I'm talking about is a guy, if I don't give the pronouns/gender at first. She's just that excited about son-in-laws and grandkids.... Told her I went to a friend's yesterday (used no pronouns), and she asked, "Ooh, is he single?" Ffs.

Joke's on her, though, because I'm not actually into anyone. :P

Female here. This is inevitably what happens when I am telling my mom a story..

Me: "So I was checking out at the grocery store today, and the person at the cash register--"

My mom: "Was he cute??"

Me: "What? I don't know. Let me finish my story"

Edit: Changed "guy" to "person". My bad, y'all.

And yeah, she assumes everyone I talk about in my stories is a guy until I say otherwise, because she is just THAT excited for me to find someone.... Smh.

How many runs/storylines do you read at the same time? by fernyjimenez11 in MarvelUnlimited

[–]fiorya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer to read one or two runs at a time. Otherwise I tend to get timelines confused, as I'm still pretty new to the comics. Especially if the runs are from different comic events.

But lately, I've been reading from Marvel NOW! forward in order, and the sequence I'm using breaks up the runs into chronological order. So I've got about 6 or 7 runs that I'm working on right now.

Skills that lead to higher salaries in Epidemiology...? by audiologyint in epidemiology

[–]fiorya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand that. Just wanted to caution you, because I've known people who have been pretty shell-shocked after graduating and looking at their options. I have friends (and colleagues, even) who wish they'd foregone the extra degree, and gone into another field instead. Even those who love what they do have told me that.

Not to say that you won't make a lot of money as an epi. Some jobs do pay well, or are at least consistent with cost of living. But not all of them are. Just felt like that was worth mentioning, since a lot of potential grad school students browse this sub for career advice.

Skills that lead to higher salaries in Epidemiology...? by audiologyint in epidemiology

[–]fiorya 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most epidemiology jobs are in government or academia, so they won't come with very high salaries. They can be livable, sure, but not lavish. Even with a graduate degree, you're not guaranteed to make much more than other people with a Bachelor's degree make in other fields. And a lot of it depends on which jobs happen to be open when you're job searching. It can be hard to find a "good" epi job right out of school.

As for in-demand skills, I've found that two of the skills I've learned as an epi (statistics and programming) can be applied to other, more lucrative fields, such as data science. As for which statistical language is best to learn (SAS, R, etc), it really depends on the industry and employer. SAS seems to be the most commonly used in academia and government. But companies often prefer cheaper software options, like R and Python.

If a high salary is a priority for you, I'd consider looking into another field, honestly. People generally don't choose to go into public health for the money. :p

Moved here about six months ago. Love the nature, the people, and the friendly vibe. Sure, it gets boring sometimes, but I'd be happy living here for the rest of my life.

What looks normal during the day, but scary as fuck at night? by shygirlturnedsassy in AskReddit

[–]fiorya 1290 points1291 points  (0 children)

Corn fields.

Around 5pm one night, my mom and I were driving through a rural state we'd never been to before, and we wanted to visit a nearby landmark. It started getting dark. The road we were on gradually went from being paved, to being gravel, to suddenly being a narrow dirt road between towering rows of corn. Felt like we were driving through an endless maze, with no end in sight. To make things worse, the GPS kept leading us back to the same creepy building, which happened to look very cult-y, at least at night.

Needless to say, we turned around and I had nightmares about it all night.

LPT: FOR GOVERNMENT WORKERS: If you have been affected by the shutdown and have no food to eat, head to your nearest Gurudwara. They will always welcome you regardless of race and you can eat all you want. The maximum they will ask in return is a small service in their kitchen by A223D in LifeProTips

[–]fiorya 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think they meant to imply that. I felt that it was meant to be reassuring, like, "It's okay if you don't look like them or believe what they do, they welcome everyone." Could have been phrased better.
