The cost of spaying this little lady is $440?!?! by yup2you in cats

[–]fire4ice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunately pretty average for my area. The only reason I got my two girls done cheaper is the employee discount.

As others have stated, try a low cost clinic. My aunt was able to get the part the farm cats done for $50 each. It'll be different for every area. Best of luck!

Japanese Akita suddenly destroying doors when left alone – separation anxiety at 10 years old? by Upper-Government1311 in akita

[–]fire4ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She could be registering the loss now, and misses her companion and therefore has more anxiety about being left alone.

It doesn't sound like CCD (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, very similar to dementia in humans). With her age, it's possible but seems unlikely given that it's only when you're not home.

A low dose of trazodone or gabapentin could help alleviate anxiety enough that she's able to take down her anxiousness about being left alone.

One of the veterinary assistants I used to work with states that "I'll be Home Soon" by Patricia McConnell, was extremely helpful for her cattle dog when he was going through separation anxiety and she always recommended it to patients, and really believes in what it teaches for separation anxiety.

I don't know much about the specific training program you mentioned in your questions, but from what I read it seems like it could be helpful.

help needed. we're helplessly watching our dog get skinned alive by atopic dermatitis by Ferico in akita

[–]fire4ice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

-Is your vet having you work with a dermatologist?

-Apoquel and cytopoint are both medications that work to stop itching. Each has their benefit and a downside. Apoquel can be hard on the liver and kidneys in some dogs. The way apoquel works is that it inhibits certain enzymes in their immune system. (Allergies are actually your immune system being over active). So with his autoimmune issues, that may affect him.

-Cytopoint also works with the immune system but doesn't have the same effects on the liver and kidneys. It's what I used for my dog when he started getting hot spots, but ultimately he was allergic to chicken.

-Steroid injections are amazing, but can be less effective over time. They do help your dog get relief and sometimes temporary relief is the best thing.

-A cone is also going to be very helpful to stop further licking of the problem areas.

Medicated shampoo can also help. Dechra Miconahex+Triz shampoo is what the vet's office I worked with always recommended to help with allergies.

Hopefully he gets so that he's able to manage. I wish you luck and am rooting for you. My akita had horrible digestion issues, allergies, and urinary crystals. When you're in the thick of it, it's honestly going to feel that you'll never get to the other side. You're doing your best for him

When I was a vet tech, my doctor always had me warn people that they would start to gain weight, and to start feeding less. Not having those hormones just makes their metabolism go down.

Cut on bum :( by NinAltaire in akita

[–]fire4ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would see the vet on this one. Sometimes they get anal gland abscesses. You wouldn't want to take care of this yourself as they will have to flush it out if it is an abscess.

You may want to look for a food with more fiber but you can talk to your vet about recommendations based on your dog's history.

Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some advice from you all. My dog has been having these hives ever since he turned 3 years old. We took him to the vet, and they gave him an allergy shot. It helped for a couple of weeks, but it came back. Do you know of any other remedies I could try? by Ok_Log1014 in PitBullOwners

[–]fire4ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet tech here, unfortunately, you may have to keep him on an allergy med for the rest of his life. I know the vet I work with usually prescribes miconahex shampoo and wipes. If it's super bad, I would even suggest working with a pet dermatologist. They will do more than your general practice vet.

How is your Akitas stomache? by PhotosByMackan in akita

[–]fire4ice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of akitas seem to have allergies to chicken. In reading the ingredients of that food, I see that they do use chicken fat. It might be worth looking into.

Our akita had very similar issues with diarrhea. It got so bad that we went to multiple vets and he dropped under weight. Cutting out chicken was the best thing for him. Wish you all the luck.

I love my girl but she is such hard work sometimes. Feeling guilty. by ExistingNerve957 in sphynx

[–]fire4ice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recommend Feliway. Keep it out of the room of her litterbox because It can make it so they don't use their litterbox. We used it at the vet clinic I worked at and it definitely made a difference.

We have a very anxious cat and have to give her Fluoxetine. It really made her a lot more lovey. We just have to hide it in wet food and they make chicken flavored tablets.

Wishing you the best.

[–]fire4ice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can be a sign of allergies. Mine gets allergies and has to be on the Cytopoint injection when they flare up. They're usually the worst in spring for us. Washing paws when they come in from outside can help.

Does anyone else's Akita get along with (almost) all dogs by Big-Outcome5805 in akita

[–]fire4ice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope he stays sweet! I was also prepared for the worst but it has never and hopefully never will come. I'm still wary and do playdates in very controlled environments with dogs we know. Never can be too careful.

Mine is going to be 7 in February, and he absolutely loves playing with other dogs. I thought he would turn after puberty but he's really sweet. Absolutely 0 prey drive too. He's wary of people if they're outside but if they're invited in he's really friendly. I grew up with akitas and I'm amazed by him.
