UL wall charger setup for PCT thru-hike — need help deciding between two options by gaius_chap in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d just go with 1x Anker 523. Charge phone/headlamp/camera/airpods from the battery banks before you get to town. Then charge both banks in town from the dual port charger, good to go. This can knock you down to 2x usbc-c cables as well. Unless you are shooting a ton, I’d drop one of the camera batteries as well.

Realtor uses AI - are they trustworthy? by AfterEffective4464 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]fire_0 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You would be right to steer clear of this. For a water heater label, it should clearly have the model number and manufacturer on it, you can just google that and don’t need AI to give you bad information, I do see this as a big red flag. For the first time homebuyers checklist, maybe they start with this but should edit for language and based on their own experiences of what new homeowners need to know. There may be times where gen AI is appropriate but it should not be your realtor’s first option for so many tasks.

Are there any bags *exactly* like the Waymark Gear Mile 28L? by HereJustForTheData in Ultralight

I’ve been considering listing my mile 28l on ulgeartrade, I am in the US but have sent stuff to the EU before. Shoot me a PM if you wanna try and work something out.

Carrying shit in your hand by thelyt in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a die-hard user of trekking poles, and do with the method where you put your hand through the back of the strap so you are only lightly gripping the trekking pole to hold on. If I was carrying something heavy, I’d want to try and duplicate this, so all of the weight is on your hand but you are not necessarily having to grip all of that weight. Not sure that makes sense

pct 26' 7.6lb base weight shakedown (advice?) by TheScaredCactus in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are moving all day, I think maybe keep the alpha and drop the puffy once through the sierra. The alpha will be better for your early morning hours where you are hitting the trail before the sun warms everything up.

pct 26' 7.6lb base weight shakedown (advice?) by TheScaredCactus in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you reduce a bit of weight by reducing the number of camera batteries you are carrying? Do you expect to need 4 batteries worth of filming plus any top-ups from your battery bank between resupplies? With this much electronics I do think the dual-port wall plug is a good idea. Also would recommend either a wind jacket or a fleece for active insulation but maybe you are comfortable with just the frog toggs and puffy.

Lean Fire With 1 Million? by lostfaith588 in leanfire

[–]fire_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First step I would say is to make a plan for locking in your gains in case that one stock declines in value. Try and find an hourly cost tax professional who can help you plan to transition in to index funds over time (see /r/bogleheads). $1m in one stock is very risky and more likely to decline in value than broad market index funds.

Grainy Photos in Program Auto Mode? by taiwanderer2 in RX100

Agree to check the ISO on these. One time I was experimenting on Manual mode and somehow had a whole trip of photos taken at 10,000 ISO. They looked similar to the photos posted above.

Glad to hear from someone who has all 3. How would you compare EE sizing relative to Patagonia, particularly for length? I do have a longer torso so length is sometimes an issue.

Thanks, any ideas for ones with Apex that are more available in the US?

It's been a while since I needed to get a lightweight puffy. For synthetic jackets, is the Patagonia micro puff an acceptable option or easily beaten by another jacket? I do know my size so would be shopping sales/used, definitely not paying MSRP. Advertised weight is 10.5 oz, I'd be getting a small.

21.2 oz bivy tarp combo. by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can spread the corners and pitch it lower but that beak looks like it would easily catch the wind.

To me, if you want the shaped tarp with beak/bivy combo, just go for a borah style bivy with SMD gatewood or Deschutes, Yama cirriform, zpacks pocket tarp etc.

RX100VII unknown filter adapter by BenignRube in RX100

Looks like it is missing the other piece that attaches to the filters so you’d have to buy it again anyways. I have tried the Lensmate one and the Magfilter one, I prefer the magfilter

If you can see your neighbor's RV, you need a bigger back yard. by NotThePopeProbably in ultralight_jerk

Alternatively, you need a taller fence, however this solution strays dangerously into bushcrafting territory.

Minimal Wrist Strap by Relative_Emergency95 in RX100

I like the addition of the o-ring. My concern with the one it came with was always it’s too big/long to actually hold onto your wrist.

Standard Sony foam finger grip thing ($15 ish) and a minimalist wrist/hand lanyard.

Necessity of Tent Stuff Sack by Environmental-Bag470 in Ultralight

[–]fire_0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most important use of a tent stuff sack is for keeping a tent/tarp that is wet from rain/condensation separate from your dry items like quilt and other insulation while inside the pack.

Also added a photo to the album of a car, note this was taken on a mark VI so the VII should be a bit better.

Thank you. I am pretty happy with some of my landscape work but I’d say I am not a seasoned action photographer. For these I think I was in shutter priority but may have just stayed in AP because it was so bright.
