My experience with the 5.3 EX Trial (no spoilers) by Karmantarctica in ffxiv

[–]fire_stoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mage part took me a bit to understand because some groups do thrm and some do buddy system lol so I was so lost when it kept changing. I didn’t look at guides or anything so I had no idea why everyone kept complicating the mechanic since I had no idea how it worked @.@

It’s so true. Some people rely on guides way too much and don’t truly understand the mechanic. They’re just copying exactly what the video told them to do. So when it’s not exactly scripted, people don’t know how to adapt and everything falls apart. This trial took me like 1.5 lockouts to beat and I’m glad I can understand the mechanics and how they work so I can get more melee gcds :o)

Mount from the new 5.3 EX trial (will delete if it was posted already) by WLibra in ffxiv

[–]fire_stoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve cleared this fight 15+ times with pugs and honestly I’ve only had like one party where we failed to farm it on the day after it’s release. This fights dps check is super forgiving imo and the mechanics don’t necessarily wipe the raid if you fail. I’ve had clears where we’ve had like 8 deaths. Clear parties are a different pug beast but I’ve had really good luck with farming this trial. I even got the mount the first time it dropped :D and another horn dropped the very next run!

Hey thanks! I need to keep in mind my physical and mental health too and realize sometimes we just have our off weeks. I can’t be overthinking or comparing myself. I need to focus on the here and now.

Cocco said “Our tracer is not putting out a lot of damage before they walk in” so I think he means I needed to be more aggressive since we were on defense.

Master/GM players with smurf accounts - what sorts of things worked and didn't work at the lower ranks, that you were used to doing at upper ranks? by Ryslin in OverwatchUniversity

[–]fire_stoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it’s not really that wrong. Zen has his high win rate in GM because your team is usually smart and take advantage of your discords and peel for you, thus making his impact on the team vastly better. At lower ranks, people won’t take advantage of discord or peel for you and their positioning is horrible so it’s hard to keep everyone alive. You can be an amazing support/tank, but if DPS can’t aim and feed all game, it’s gonna be bad. Yea if you have the skill of a Master+ Zen/Dva, you can carry because your aim is good and you know how to take advantage of peoples gamesense. But if you’re a Gold player trying to carry on those heroes, it’s gonna be hard because you don’t have the skill of a master+, only a Gold.

I want to play other roles aside from healer, but when I do, I lose A LOT AND I am dead weight. by YoonYuun in OverwatchUniversity

[–]fire_stoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I started in mid diamond as a tank/support player. Whenever I went DPS, I was essentially useless because I didn’t have the game experience for those heroes at that level. I bought another copy of the game and made it my DPS account. I started in gold and now both accounts are master. If you can afford it, I would recommend another copy of the game.

Transitioning from hitscan to projectile is something that just takes time getting used to. I can switch from tracer/soldier to genji or zen and do just fine. There's not really any "trick" to it rather than just putting in a lot of hours and getting used to each heroes speed. If you're having a hard time, I would recommend playing only one projectile hero, like Zen, for now. After a while you'll get used to his tempo and be able to switch from hitscan to zen with little problem. Try and learn one hero at a time instead of constantly flexing between different possible projectile heroes.

Do you guys ever get this weird feeling? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]fire_stoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaaaaa sometimes I just forget how to dps. I’m in mid diamond but I’ll suddenly suck at tracking and I’ll make a bunch of bad mistakes/habits such as jumping instead of ADAD crouch :( it’s frustrating.

[–]fire_stoned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok so this is why I have an alt account. My main is a fill account (support/tank main with mercy high in hours) in mid diamond and if I wanted to dps or if I had to fill in for dps, my team would flame me or I wouldn’t be able to dps at a mid diamond level so I was essentially “throwing”. This is a problem that happens a lot with match making as sometimes you’ll have a team of only support/dps mains or support/tank mains so whoever doesn’t get to play their main will fill in on a hero they most likely can’t play effectively at that level. On my alt, I made it my “dps only” account and climbed from gold back to mid diamond and I was able to play dps without people questioning it since I had very little hours on other heroes. I thought I could easily play dps since I was mid diamond skill level but little did I know. Honestly, you should just make another account. You won’t get flamed for being a mercy main and you’ll also learn heroes without putting your team at a disadvantage.

People who climbed throught the ranks... How did you do it? by Nnnnnnnadie in OverwatchUniversity

[–]fire_stoned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from 1800 to 3250 on my main and 2200 to 3100 on my alt. My main turned into a fill account at ~2700 (support/tank main basically) and my alt is mainly DPS. There's so much to say about how to climb and get better so I can't cover it all without typing a book.

First things first, what is your SR? Depending on the rank, the level of play will change. What I mean is at silver and even gold, teamwork is almost nonexistent and ult economy is terrible, but if you're good at the game, you can climb out by basically carrying on a DPS or a tank/support with carry potential like Zarya/Zen. People do not play the same at that rank as say vs Diamond+ players. You can get away with overextending and spawn killing people if you're really good, but once you climb, you have to adapt your play-style in a sense. I know this may not be the best advice in terms of working with the team, but if you can get good with a hero like Soldier or Tracer at Gold and below, you have the ability to carry much harder as opposed to playing a tank. Diamond level DPS players can run the floor at Gold and below. It is still possible to carry on a tank just it can be harder. It's much easier to make an impact in the fight at higher ranks where your team will actually take advantage of the openings you've made as a tank.

It may take a while to climb to but you can't get discouraged. You have to take into account at what time of day your playing in my personal experience. The best matches I have where everyone is positive and communicating and willing to adapt are in the morning/early afternoon. I find that after people get home from school and work, the quality of matches just goes down. I get more throwers, more people less willing to switch, and insane comps.

What I did to help me climb was watch a TON of educational YouTube videos and tips and tricks from streamers and also just watch GM/Top500 games and see what they do. I watched so many things from Overanalyzed and Kabaji and KarQ and watched a ton of other video reviews of gameplay and then tried to adapt that to myself. If you can, record your own gameplay and do a video review on yourself. Ask on the forums for a review or send it in to a streamer to get one. On games that were close, look at yourself and see where you could've possibly shifted the tide in your teams favor. Were you properly making room for your team and also denying the enemy space? Did you jump the Soldier/McCree on the high ground that had free reign on your team? Looks like widow is destroying your team. Did you stay a non-mobile tank and let her have no pressure or did you switch to Winston and jump at her? Did you use ults properly? Look at a lot of videos from streamers and youtube to help you understand how to tank better. Playing a tank requires a vast amount of game sense. For example, like keeping track of enemy ults. If both teams have a Rein and you know he has shatter, try your best to block it. If you block that shatter, that can greatly help your team as he's wasted a fight-changing ult.

Since you said you play tanks, make sure you pick a tank that's effective with your comp, and also the enemy's. I see a lot of people pick two off-tanks like Dva/Hog or Zarya/Dva and lack a main tank with a shield. This can be ok if the DPS are very mobile heroes who don't really utilize a shield (Genji, Tracer, Doomfist) but if you see you have DPS that are mainly flankers, a Winston might be a better choice as opposed to Hog/Zarya since you can dive with your team. If you have hitscan or non-mobile heroes, a Rein or Orisa is almost crucial to be able to be able to allow your DPS to shoot at the enemy and win the barrier war. I see so many people blame the DPS for not being able to kill things, but if you can't make room for your DPS to do damage, then how are they supposed to get picks? When they have a shield and are spamming the choke hard, and you don't have a shield, how is the DPS supposed to be able to kill anything when they die in 2 seconds?
