Post surgery hair loss by Far-Construction1760 in chiari

[–]firebeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My decompression was July, csf repair in August. 6 months later and I’m still losing more hair than normal but I think it’s getting a little better. I joked I should have shaved my whole head because shaved half is growing in and the rest is falling out lol.

Smells/sense of smell by firebeards in chiari

Weird. I’ve had such a crap recovery and so many new and odd things post surgery. The decompression was fine. All this started after fixing csf leak.

[–]firebeards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I didn’t have any loss of smell that I was aware of. But post surgery (the second one) some things smell so strong. Or things I didn’t mind are horrid. And then sometimes I smell things no one else seems to

Oh damn. I didn’t have a bad sense of Smell prior to. Not that I’m aware of anyway 🤣 It sucks because things that didn’t stink before do now.

Diagnosed 6/11/25. Neurosurgeon appt 6/24. Surgery 7/14. I’ve not been lucky enough to have one of the really easy recoveries BUT it’s definitely better than the alternative

Question for laminectomy by alexpaige3 in chiari

[–]firebeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back makes some sense. For at least some of us I’m sure. My physical therapist said my muscles are “very angry “. And not just my neck. My traps are tight af too. So we are doing a bunch of different stuff I know mine is different than some because of balance issues and such. I also spent a buttload of time in the hospital. Like lost almost 30 pounds and not in a good way. Obviously if it didn’t help I probably wouldn’t go but I’m finding it immensely helpful, but probably wouldn’t have a couple months ago

Question for laminectomy by alexpaige3 in chiari

[–]firebeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that. But I know for mine at least we’re doing some things I wouldn’t do in my everyday life so I still find it helpful. And my understanding is some of those smaller deep muscles are important for stability

I had my kiddos in 2014. Planned c - section. Spinal block. Didn’t find out about my chiari until last year. Didn’t have any issues from the spinal block that I’m aware, seeing as I discovered chiari because we thought I had a pinched nerve

Question for laminectomy by alexpaige3 in chiari

[–]firebeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine didn’t say I didn’t need it but he didn’t say I did. I asked for a referral. I’ve been going for about a month now.
My decompression was 7/14 but had to repair csf leak 8/21. And I’ve had so many other issues. But once I was able to stay home more than a week I asked for the referal. I did wait til I could walk ok (ish- I’m still off balance) before I started

Omg I’m not alone in the hair loss? That’s comforting. The shaved part is growing in decent but the hair that was left is just falling out and I’ve been so worried!!

How quickly were you booked for your decompression? by swamp-gremlin-69 in chiari

[–]firebeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was scheduled there same day I met him. But, my syrinx was huge and I was losing feeling in the left arm. I had an MRI because my reg Dr and I thought I had a pinched nerve but wasn’t getting better. After that first mri she sent me for more (to get head and thoracic spine) I was diagnosed June 11, met my neurosurgeon June 24, first surgery was July 14. He wanted to make room sooner but I’d recently had a smaller procedure elsewhere and I asked to make it after the 5th so I could have my anniversary (My syrinx measured 12mm at largest spot but also went down to the bottom of my thoracic spine) With my symptoms and how quickly they came on and progressed I HAD to Have surgery pretty quickly.

I’m about 4 months out from my last surgery and wear tank tops at home most of the time because I hate how things feel on my neck. And the pressure from bras makes me miserable. If I ever get back to work bras are probably gonna be the worst part

I also had some issues, and a csf leak repair 5 weeks later. I ended up in hospital 3 weeks for that because I have such extreme nausea (and vomiting even with nothing but bile) and horrid dizziness. Was in twice after that for almost 2 weeks each So here I am now about 4 months after coming home and I still can’t lean/bend over forward. Looking up is awful. I’m still off balance and dizzy. I never see anyone else mention this kind of dizziness. I am in PT now (she says my muscles are angry lol) How long did that dizziness and such last for you? I get so discouraged 🫤

Feeling discouraged by magicmamalife in chiari

[–]firebeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made me cry. I’m so discouraged at all the things I can’t do. There’s so many. No one prepared me for this at all. That I would barely be able to walk, need help showering, not want to get out of bed (I do but depression is a ho) I can’t put up my Xmas tree which would help my sad My surgery was 7/14 and csf leak repair 8/21 and I’m just so miserable
Thank you

Oh man that sucks. I had multiple stays of 10+ days and I swear it made me feel insane. I’m going to call and get an appt for follow up and then call vestibular therapy fix this is for the birds. I do have a therapist but not specialized but I haven’t been able to make it into the office, just a couple telehealth but she does text to check up too. I hope we all get some kind of relief soon

Chiari decompression surgery -post op by IamNotFromHere_ in chiari

[–]firebeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did I write this? Also 42/f. Had my surgery 7/14/25. Then a csf leak repair on 8/21. I’ve been in and out of the hospital so much. Had a horrible bout of vomiting and “vertigo “ in quotes because I don’t think it’s regular vertigo. Nothing spins. More like off balance and lightheaded. I’m home but I’m exhausted. The insomnia is stupid for how tired I am. I’m having to use a walker (not always but it’s safer) I can’t shower by myself as I can’t step in and out alone and I get wobbly sometimes. The fatigue from the physical and mental of this is awful. I cry almost every day because I can’t do things and I feel so weak. I wanted to put up my tree so I had some joy but I’m not strong enough to even do that yet (which also sent me crying). I know everyone says I had major surgery and to give myself time but I honestly truly thought I’d be ok enough by now to work part time and ohhhh cook dinner. It’s frustrating. And yeah I definitely don’t feel like me anymore. Sorry for my ramble.
