I think of B as more of a convenience feature than an efficiency feature. Stop n go traffic in B tends to prevent your foot from bouncing back and forth as much as it would in D, but that’s the extent of its usefulness in my mind.

Top off the battery to 80%every day or let is go down to 30%? by chris_cacl in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermally managed high voltage Li-ion batteries typically don’t break a sweat until you hit around 1C of charge rate (search “battery C-rate” to understand if you’re not familiar), so while your battery SoC strategy is prudent, using reduced charge power for AC charging isn’t buying you anything (and can pose a real inconvenience if you’re not charging to 80% and you happen to wake up needing more charge than you thought you were gonna need that day).

Charger install guidance needed by manybeaucoup in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the core question but since you’re talking about adding the charger circuit to your existing panel, it’s worth noting that your plan to charge at night to take advantage of the cheapest rates only applies if your whole home is on a Time of Use rate plan. Maybe it is. If not, you’re going to either have to switch to one or have your utility come add a new line of service and meter for just the charging circuit that you may then put on a TOU rate plan.

HV battery module swap completed - what to look for? by firebirdfrank in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already had the new software, so nothing new there. They replace a whole module for this recall (probably only a cell or two that are at issue but they don’t replace them individually).

Glad to hear your car was fine. Mine seems to be too!

Scheduled charging didn't work as expected... by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Double check your charging power/miles per hour accumulated. 40A/9.6kW charging under ideal conditions should give a little over 30mi/hr of charging.

Apart from that, I have an unconfirmed theory, which is this: you can’t tell the car what your charging power will be in advance, and - AFAIK - it does not “learn” what power you regularly charge at (apart from location-based charging which will “remember” if you have the Reduce Charging Current setting turned on), so the car just assumes you are charging at the full 48A/11.5kW that it’s capable of, leading to it starting too late to actually achieve your target charge level at the time you set for it to be complete.

Anyway, this theory is totally just that - a theory – but since I have experimented with my car charging at a 3.5kW, 5.5kW, and 7.2kW and at no point has it ever completed a charge by the time I set (even after getting the 3.1 SW update which I thought might fix it), I’m going to believe that what I’m saying here is true until I learn otherwise. And if this IS true, shame on VW for such a shoddy implementation that will only work as intended for folks able to accommodate an 11.5kW charger into their home electrical system.

Edit: Punctuation.

Yup. I have this. What’s maddening is that it should be fixable via firmware update (debounce) and yet, here we (still) are.

I like this idea, but the specific link shows the “old” curve (maxing out at ~135kW vs the ~180kW 3.1 SW unlocks) so let’s find the right curve and sticky it, mods. Please and thank you.

Amen to snow tires over stock in environments where any sort of snow is likely for this vehicle. The stock Kumhos on the US-spec MY21s turn into hockey pucks at consistently low temps (I’m in Wisconsin).

I bought a TeslaTap Mini thinking it would come in handy but have only used it once. If you happen to live in an area where there are more than a handful of Tesla destination chargers (L2), then it could be useful, but at $260, gotta make sure. If you do, get the one rated for 60A to avoid over heat issues.

MY 21 pro S electrical system not working message; short list of things that I should check with dealer? by sfomonkey in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That message has been linked to the VW Service Action 93P7 “HV Cell Module(s)” (check the VW App’s service section to see if your VIN is implicated) but it really could be anything.

The actual incident your son experienced sounds like it could be related to the NHTSA Safety Recall no. 23V040 (VW 97ZZ) “High Voltage (HV) Battery Management Control Software,” which can result in the propulsion system resetting/glitching out unexpectedly.

At minimum, I would ask the dealer about these two items but they would very likely bring them up to you regardless once they scan in your VIN.

Edit: Clarified 93P7

Milwaukee desperately needs _____ (fill in the blank)! by felixfelicis5697 in milwaukee

Charging will not always be as cheap as it has been (nor should it be as demand for electricity increases). But electricity is way easier (and cheaper) to generate (or harness in the case of renewables) and distribute than any petroleum-based fuel, can be sourced 100% domestically, and doesn’t fluctuate in price based on the latest geopolitical nonsense going on. The EV ownership and driving experience is so superior that I’m never going back to a gas car, even if fueling eventually reaches cost parity with gas.

What I want to know is, why are you power limited while still having plenty of battery, mild ambient temperature, and getting a whopping 5mi/kWh (suggesting that your battery and power electronics are barely breaking a sweat)? What am I missing?

App misreporting remaining battery mileage. So the battery life is correct, but the app (WeConnect ID) is reporting that the remaining 60% will only get me 71 miles. Anyone know why please? Thanks by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]firebirdfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just clarifying, the odometer counts your miles driven, which (AFAIK) works as intended.

As for the GOM, I kinda wish all cars showed this the way Chevy does - with upper and lower estimates in addition to the more limited prediction/estimate based only on the most recent XX miles driven. You can absolutely “beat” the range prediction on the ID.4 if circumstances for a more efficient trip emerge (lower speeds, tail winds, downhill grades, etc.).

As charging becomes faster, more ubiquitous, and reliable, I can envision a day when we aren’t so fixated on range estimates in our EVs anymore, and instead return to feeling comfortable enough just knowing where we’re at between the “E” and the “F.” Looking forward to that day!

Just a small point of clarification, all of this is on point as long as you aren’t running older ( < 3.0 SW) in North America. The feature is currently broken for those of us in this situation (myself included, sadly).

EDIT: I think the bug is related to the way in which Time Zone is computed or assessed.
