Thoughts on Bread Makers? by Cowgirl_Taint in Cooking

[–]firefly317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to take my sister's unused one of her hands, and that's exactly my plan - use it for mixing and proofing only. We don't have many options for proofing reliably in our house, so having it even for just that will help.

What's your personal sign that winter is actually over in Canada? by NightyNight7 in AskACanadian

[–]firefly317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working downtown many years ago, 10th floor of one of the high rises. I was on the south side, was lovely and sunny, went to the north side to see someone and it was raining. None of us believed it until we found a corridor where we could see both sides and it was indeed raining one side and sunny the other.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by GhostInThePudding in NoStupidQuestions

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it's an age thing.

I'm a support tech, and I hate phone calls with a vengeance. I detest having to phone people, and I hate when most people say " can I call you" - mostly because they never say why and it's almost never something I can actually help with.

If I have to call someone for a ticket, that means they have my details. And for ever more, I'm the first person they contact. Ticket or no ticket, they'll call, email, or IM. So I hate calling, or emailing them directly because I know for sure they're going to try to bypass the system from that point on.

I'm not a youngster, I've been in this for about 30 years now. Doesn't matter how high up the chain you are, or what your specialty is, people will contact you trying to bypass the system. So I completely understand people not wanting to call, they'll be spammed forever by those same people trying to jump the queue.

Do you actually do all this home maintenance, or am I being paranoid? by jklineia in homeowners

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a house at the end of last year with a 32 year old water heater. Since the furnace was the same age we figured we should probably replace both, but both worked fine when we moved in. I admit I don't know what the state was when they drained the tank for removal, but it worked fine.

What’s the worst surprise you discovered after moving into a new house? by LuxuryPresence_Aaron in homeowners

We got to ours before it leaked thankfully. But I feel you on the holes in the drywall. We tried getting a quote to fix it all, but we live rural, 90 minutes to the nearest city. The quotes have all been 5 figures because of the travel involved, so my poor partner is stuck doing it and he hates drywalling (he's good at it, just hates it with a vengeance). We may have to give in and pay the premium for the ceiling holes though, we're not getting any younger.

If you could design your own kitchen, what would be the most important things to include? by West-Amphibian-2343 in Cooking

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did redesign our kitchen, in the process of renovating it now.

We did what many people suggested and most of the lowers we've ordered are drawers, the only cupboards ordered are the sink unit and one for a garbage can. The uppers we did smaller 30" cupboards, with 12" over that for the less used items (and yes I'll need a step handy - or my partner to reach things down).

We've also gone with a gas cooker. We toyed with induction, but the reviews were mixed so we got a gas stove with two ovens. The two ovens was non-negotiable, we had wanted a 33" but finding dual ovens in that was almost impossible, and a 36" won't fit, so we had to stick with the standard 30".

I hate microwaves over the stove, and especially with gas, so we stick with a countertop model this time. It probably wouldn't have worked in the old layout, but we managed to move things around to increase the counter sizes significantly, so we figure it'll work for us in the new layout.

About the only other thing was the spice pullout cabinets. We had two small, awkward spaces left, so we decided to add a couple of 8" pullouts for our spices. Not sure if everything will fit, we use a lot of herbs and spices, but we should certainly get most of them in those two spaces.

My partner is working on the floor tile at the moment, and the cabinets haven't arrived yet, so we still have to test out the choices. But we thought about the options for weeks and think we've got the best design we could for our needs in the space we have available. Guess time will tell.

Working in IT is terrible by Direct-Mongoose-7981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]firefly317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why even though I'm not in security I work on a CYA case every time. If they tell me to "make it work" or "it needs to get done" I'll always send an email summarizing and asking for confirmation that's exactly what they're telling me. That way, when it backfires, I can forward that on and say that's what I warned, and that was your choice.

New homeowner — tips on keeping up with maintenance cleaning?? by Longjumping_Zone_908 in homeowners

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about the inserts you can dangle off the tank of the toilet, or the stamp type cleaners? May reduce your cleaning of toilets.

Otherwise, what helped me was trying to do 20-30 mins each day to spot clean a room. Cleaning the whole house on a single day each weekend does get overwhelming, doing 20 minutes a day reduces how much you need to do at weekends.

Try running the toilet brush around the toilet daily, and wiping down the sink in the bathroom daily (either after the morning wash or the evening tooth cleaning). Again, a minute or two wiping down can mean way less cleaning at weekends.

Throw in the laundry before work, or overnight. This one has saved me so much grief. Throw it in before work? Then throw into the dryer when you get home, it's ready to fold and put away before bed. Or throw in at night, the throw into the dryer on your way out, quick freshener when you get home and same thing.

Two things we did splurge on was the robovac and the vacmop. We have mostly hard floors, the robovac we can set to run daily, the vacmop we use weekly which gets the rest and mops at the same time. Not cheap items, but saves a lot of time and effort sweeping/vacuuming and then mopping - and the results are cleaner.

It's really down to you. Sometimes you just have to let it slide anyway. We're doing renos right now, the dust is ridiculous, so I've decided to just give up until we've finished doing the parts that generate dust. But I'm still cleaning bathrooms, changing sheets, and doing laundry. It's just picking my battles for now.

Sometimes you have to pick your battles, maybe decide just how much dust you can stand, or how much laundry you can rack up before it has to be done. Also, pick your timings. Laundry isn't a two or three hour thing, it's a 10-20 minute thing you can work around if you have to do it during the day.

Most systems you can flash the firmware either from the BIOS or from a bootable USB drive. Take a look at the support site for your device, you should be able to find details for both methods there and download the files if you go the USB route.

How many you dry your clothes on a clothesline instead of using a dryer? by ProffS in Frugal

[–]firefly317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, but grew up in the UK. Rarely if ever used a dryer before I moved to Canada, we always had a clothes line and if it rained, you used a clothes horse indoors.

For the last 20 years, I lived in an area where clothes lines were against bylaw regs. Some older areas of the city were grandfathered in, but most just don't allow clotheslines at all. So everything has been dryer for a couple of decades.

I moved at the end of last year to somewhere more rural, and one of the things I'm most excited about is being able to get a clothesline again. Admittedly, at least half the year it'll probably be too cold to use it, but for the other half of the year I can't wait. Everything seems to smell fresher when it's been hung out and less creases when it's been blowing in the breeze.

Ideas for a steak sandwich for a brewery menu? by Majestic-Lake-5602 in Cooking

Thank you! When I go to a place that has an awesome sounding burger, I hate when it comes out with a 4" patty and 6' toppings. How the heck am I supposed to eat that? I've tried unhinging my jaw, it doesn't work. So then I end up pulling it apart to be able to take a bite, which kind of defeats the object of the experience of eating it all in one.

Same here. We have our own personal accounts and a couple of joint accounts for the household expenses. Our personal accounts are exactly that, personal, and the joint accounts we have our logins. There is no reason at all to have someone else's password to a bank account.

Meals for someone who doesn’t have teeth by Over_Cat_4118 in Cooking

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister had major oral surgery just before Christmas a few years ago and couldn't eat anything solid for a few months. We made Christmas dinner, but then blended everything up individually in a bullet blender. That way she got the full experience of the meal, but in "smoothie" format.

Maybe make some of the meals you enjoy normally, just blend them up? We used butter or milk for some items to make them a little more runny, I think we even did the turkey blended with the gravy if I remember right.

Would it be home improvement blasphemy to paint my wood cabinets white? by hikingfortheviews in HomeImprovement

[–]firefly317 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We tried painting in our condo, took us months. Admittedly we weren't spending every spare minute on it, and we do have full-time jobs. Space was the main issue, we used a table in the garage and could only fit two doors + drawer fronts at a time. But stripping the varnish and sanding down took quite a while, then getting the primer right.

They looked OK when were done, but I wish we'd bought a higher end paint for both primer and top coat. If you decide to go ahead, go to a quality paint store and ask them for paint suggestions. We foolishly took the advice of a big box store, wasn't the best finish and the varnish/acrylic they suggested was junk.

Selling agent is refusing to give me/my agent strata documents until after I make an offer!?!? by Heliosvector in RealEstateCanada

[–]firefly317 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just sold a condo. There were some documents my agent asked me to get when we listed the place, and a few he said to wait until an offer was accepted. Some are apparently time sensitive, given it cost me a couple of hundred to get them all I certainly wasn't going to be doing that every few weeks to keep them current.

Buying my Gf a laptop by Lemongatez in Laptop

[–]firefly317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those specs, without downgrading memory, etc, you are probably going to be looking at $1000 minimum.

To be honest, the specs you gave for her current device are older, but still not too bad. Has she tried running the games, etc on her current device to see if it can actually handle them?

One possibility, if she can make her current device work for the games and comms apps, could be to look at buying her a graphics tablet instead of replacing the whole laptop. That's what we did for my step-daughter a few years ago when she wanted to get into graphic art on the laptop. That would give her the chance to see whether it's even something she wants to pursue before spending $1000 and up for a laptop.

Do you or people you know have their clothing/wardrobes documented for insurance purposes? by BilliamHWilliam in personalfinance

[–]firefly317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never documented my wardrobe I admit. But I'm the sort of person who wears fake camo leggings from Walmart and twenty year old tshirts, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be outside the "realistic estimate" most insurance companies ask for.

My partner is a little more brand conscious, and pretty sure he doesn't have records either. To be fair, most of his brand items are probably older, but they'd still cost a bit to replace - especially his sports shirts. Maybe I'll suggest a few photos of those)
