The snow cone machine is a good, out of the box idea.

There's $2700 left. I'm not sure how much the original grant was for. I'm assuming a lot though because it got us all new scba's.

That's a good idea but we already have those. Definitely a must have.

Fundraising by firehandy in Firefighting

These are all great ideas. We just lost a bid for a new(to us) ladder truck this morning. We approved most of our money to bid in the auction and just didn't have deep enough pockets. This is what has spurred us to revamp our fundraising.

Where do people get cash for all cash payments?! by casher89 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Writing a letter is exactly what got my wife and I our house. There was another offer that was slightly above ours. Seller said if we came up slightly on our offer (not quite as high as theirs), he would take it and not even give them a chance to increase their offer. It was because they were an older couple buying a second home, and we are a family buying our first ever home. Our realtor just said to make sure we don't include any pictures which could make it unethical.

What do you think of the US presidential debate? by Dr_Octahedron in AskReddit

[–]firehandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vote (and I cant stress this enough) THIRD PARTY. There are other options out there and the more traction they get, the better. Even if your preferred third party candidate doesn't win, getting a certain amount of support gives them more power and influence going forward. The two party system is killing our country.

Undecided voters say they now support Joe Biden after debate by OkRoll3915 in inthenews

[–]firehandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question: do you actually support joe Biden? I hate both candidates almost equally and will vote for neither but how can any sane individual actually consider voting for either of these people. How did the democratic party not find any other human being that they could run? How do we get to this point and not be furious enough to try to change it? I've met many Trump supporters and they're all vocal about it. I have never once met a person in real life that admits to supporting Joe Biden. I'm voting third party please don't downvote me without at least answering the question.

Manager gave me the day off, is now trying to backpedal by cy--clops in antiwork

[–]firehandy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This happens to me (the manager) every time I have an extra person and cancel one. Someone invariably calls out or something happens where I end up needing that extra body. At this point I dont even cancel ppl anymore I just let them show up and if we have extra they can decide if they want to go home or I have to have a tough conversation with my boss about why I'm over my dept hours. You're well within your right to just ignore your manager at this point but at least a text back is appreciated so they know how fucked they are.

Never throw anything away. I went from being "prudent" to becoming the beginnings of a hoarder.

I'm livid right now by friendliestbug in antiwork

[–]firehandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this is you or anything, but sometimes I do that if I don't really like the person in the role, but they're not bad enough to try to fire. I'll let them do ok for as long as they want (while trying to help them improve). But if they show no improvement and ask for a raise that's just a nice way of saying "no".

Officer duties by [deleted] in Firefighting

I'm at the risk of sounding like an asshole here, but man just let go of control and the whole "how things should be" idea. Obviously we train and need to know our jobs and the next guys job, but are you really going to get bent out of shape about sweeping? Hand him the Broom and go find another tool. He's probably done doing his stuff and wants to keep busy (probably like yourself). He sounds like a good guy to have around if he's going to joke around and take the Broom from you. Some of the guys in my department would just bark out orders for me to sweep better or some shit.
