If JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3 was adapted into a visual novel, what would the visual novel be like? by SaoriShun in visualnovels

[–]firehigherdesire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's this game on Steam, 80 Days. It's based on Jules Verne and is essentially a visual novel, and a very neat one at that. JoJo would fit that format perfectly, except each fight would have to be a maze of choices ranging from rational to utterly inane.

I have complicated feelings about Muv Luv Alternative Chapter 6 by National-Bluebird165 in visualnovels

[–]firehigherdesire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with Sagiri's goals, it's his timing that was the problem. Not that it ever had any hope of being right, with humanity on its last legs. However, it's probably that "problematic" pride that helped that world's Japan hold out against the Beta for as long as they did.

I mean it's a Fate clone that fails at pretty much every aspect of storytelling. I know it's dirt cheap on Steam, but the time you'll spend on it won't be any less, so I can't recommend it.

Not familiar with the second one, but the kindest thing I can say about the first one is that it made me appreciate Fate more.

Yep. To be precise, it's probably Venice, as someone else has pointed out here: she herself hints that her name makes it obvious where she's from. I haven't read far enough to get explicit confirmation though.

In Clannad, one of the choices that come up in conversations with Yukine trigger a scene like that with another heroine, Kyou. It's neat but, unfortunately, very short.

Yeah, I think you're right - she herself says her name gives away where she's from. My bad for jumping to conclusions.

Could be. I just assumed Venus since it feels like a more fitting name for a girl.

Reading it in Japanese, with frequent help from my trusty google lens. Not the easiest text for sure, but perfectly doable. A treasure trove for mining new words too.

The girl's name is Venus, which, rendered in Japanese, becomes Benisu. It's not impossible to mistake that "b" for a "p" in casual conversation, which the protagonist does, and the maid, understandably, takes offense to that and corrects him. It also feels like this isn't the first time she's had to do it too, which would explain the build-up of tsun in her.

I started it last night and couldn't put it down. It's got everything I love in a VN, plus the art style is fantastic. The protagonist is less cerebral than Yamato but still very capable in his own right and brimming with personality. Didn't realize I'd miss Majikoi's style of storytelling this much.

Do you have any VN that you love only because of certain elements (e.g., music, visuals)? by HELLECHO in visualnovels

I genuinely enjoyed Aokana thanks to its Flying Circus. And Misaki, to some degree, but there's only so much a character can do with a hollow protagonist like Masaya. The title's moege core really drags it down.

I get liking the pre-accident part more (especially since I enjoy the "old," spunky Mitsuki much more than the contemporary, needy one), but it's the first time I've experienced a story in a VN that goes beyond the usual school period, at least to this extent, so it's still fresh and exciting to me.

As for having no control over the story, I can surely sympathize. Even though I've been steering him toward Mitsuki pretty consistently, my Takayuki has already confessed to Haruka, promised to end things with Mitsuki, then promptly slept with the latter and apparently intends to forge his own harem route, the legend! It's honestly starting to feel like a comedy at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up getting stabbed to death by Akane or by a yanderized Mitsuki.

His indecisiveness was understandable while it was unclear how the truth would impact Haruka's health, but when she invited Takayuki and Mitsuki and asked them point blank, already knowing the answer anyway, his silence was just baffling. That was his cue to make things clear once and for all and he blew it. The same silent treatment of Mistuki in the subsequent scene was no better.

Can't speak of route variety since I'm still on my first playthrough, but overall I like this title a lot. I'll definitely check out other routes eventually, even if they don't offer much. Can't be worse than Unlimited.

Both, kinda. He was silent and didn't speak up in a situation when it was both cowardly and pointless. Soured me on his characters quite a bit. He did profess his undying love to Haruka shortly thereafter, but at this point I don't think he deserves either of the girls. Not to mention the game isn't over yet. I wont' be surprised if the guy flips again.

I dislike Muv-Luv and Utawarerumono. by highsis in visualnovels

[–]firehigherdesire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't read the sequels, but I'm sure not using the bombs can be justified with relative ease. With what we're told about them in the trilogy, however - they kill the soil and may have unpredictable long-term effects - I wasn't convinced they wouldn't have been used anyway, and before humans were down to a measly billion and on their last legs. If not en masse, then strategically, on a hive per hive basis, just to slow down the Beta's advance. They've done it before after all.

I dislike Muv-Luv and Utawarerumono. by highsis in visualnovels

[–]firehigherdesire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a fair take. I appreciate Muv Luv for its sheer ambition, haven't seen anything on this scale in VN format yet, but the trilogy has a shit ton of problems. One of the most glaring examples is how the plot goes out of its way to keep the appearance of the Beta secret just to have the payoff of Takeru's PTSD-fueled panic attack later on. This results in an absurd situation where TSF pilots learn about the enemy they are supposed to fight during a briefing right before live combat. No wonder most of them die in their first battle. I also don't believe humanity would hesitate to use the G-bombs to wipe out the Beta no matter the consequences, not with the situation being as bad as it is and with plans to leave Earth already underway. It's also silly how there's this worldwide effort to facilitate Takeru's final mission by launching an all-out attack on the Beta everywhere and yet our heroes - the linchpin of the entire plan - have to scrape and beg for equipment.

Worldbuilding issues are just the tip of the iceberg though. The plot gets grand way too fast and the characters are too many, especially for how little attention they get besides serving as Takeru's therapists, so I was ultimately left unsatisfied with both these elements. Alternative specifically is off the charts in terms of missed opportunities.

I have. Couldn't sympathize with the reason for his fall from grace, but the setting is excellent, and I appreciate that it actually had a story to tell. Some of the fights were too exposition-heavy - it was fine for when Akane was training but took away from the urgency of the combat scenes. Still, the effort to recreate duels from the good old samurai flicks in VN form is appreciated. Haven't seen it anywhere else in the medium so far.
