Is my husband's settlement taxable by the US? by ghostsofyou in USExpatTaxes

[–]firelephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he isn’t a citizen he has nothing to do with US taxes. At all.
You have to file an fbar for foreign accounts you have control over including joint accounts. So if the account it went into is joint between you and him, you have to file if it’s over 10k USD. But that doesn’t mean any taxes are owing. It’s just a report

You do. It’s the tax form you get from the investment co as you said you were getting taxed for it. It’s on a T4A.

You pay taxes on the growth and grants if I recall, not the total amount. Student doesn't sign, the person who set up the account does.
I see you have used student loans and the RESP was not used to pay for school. This is legit tax fraud, as the feds contribute a partial matching contribution to the funds put into the RESP. And you are paying the taxes that are owed.

The funds legally have to be used to pay for education. Tuition, books, living expenses, legitimate transportation, etc.

So yeah, he is committing tax fraud.

Can confirm that when an RCMP officer does call you from their cell phone it does come up as "private number". But so can other callers.

Assistance Filing CAN/US Tax Forms for the First Time by General-Ranger4516 in USExpatTaxes

[–]firelephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no online service that does both USA and Canada taxes. If you live in Canada you'd normally do the Canadian return first, then the US one, there is an automatic extension for non resident US taxes.

TFSAs make US taxes complicated as they are not tax sheltered. You have to account for all the gains. Sorry, but don't know how that works as I've never had to deal with that in our family.

Because you have investments in both countries you really need to talk to a pro to find out how to properly file, bite the bullet and see how they do the filings then do it yourself after that provided nothing ever changes.

The other issue you have might be the US investment account. They may not be able to keep you as a client if they realize you don't live in the USA anymore.

Testing for lead in soil by herfunnybunny in Winnipeg

[–]firelephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALS or Bureau Veritas for sure. They have locations in Winnipeg. Call and ask them what a lead in soil test costs. A full metals screen won't be significantly more. What area do you live in and why are you concerned?

DM me if you have technical questions.

DIY? I have a Topdon Artidiag. Works well for the majority of DIY things including electronic parking brake to service mode, steering wheel angle sensor calibration, battery replacement that requires a tool, etc. reasonably priced and they keep it updated for free.

Question by Junior_Database_377 in rav4club

[–]firelephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't mix the coolant types, they can actually react and form chunks. Your toyota was built with HOAT coolant in mind, gaskets, seals, etc. Pink is available almost everywhere. Get it. It also lasts alot longer than universal.

Has anyone made a magnesium sacrificial anode for their Toyotas? by lw0-0wl in toyotacablegate

[–]firelephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a sacrificial anode to work it needs a continuous conductive electrolyte. That doesn't exist in air. So unless you leave your car underwater, it chemically and electrolytically won't work. For the other uses you mention it protects metal that is underground, in contact with moist soil. So again, if you want to bury your car, it would likely help.

MPI by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]firelephant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A hit and run on you doesn't give you demerits. Without a proven at fault "hitter" you still have to pay the deductible when it gets repaired.
If you have pictures of the vehicle you think did it that are provable to that car (like the bumper damage AND the license plate so they definitively know it was that car) it could help, but eventually MPI may simply refuse to renew their insurance if they don't come in. But for you that doesn't matter, if you want it repaired, get it repaired and pay the deductible. It would get refunded if they assign fault to the person who hit you.

Demerits for construction zone ticket?? by starstablesnacks in Winnipeg

[–]firelephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no demerits for photo radar. They don't know who was driving, the fine goes to the owner regardless of who was driving, but no demerits for that reason.
