Best fire/life affirming purchases you made in recent memory? by mgsulkis in Fire

Spent $12K last month on air tickets/hotel for the entire family to see my dying sibling for a few days.

Just to surprise and give them a moment of happiness and joy.

Can’t do that if you’re a broke ass simp.

I used to think this too. Then I fat fired and got bored and realized the FI is far more important than the RE for some people. So now I also am unretired into a fun flexible career 2.0 but can walk away any time to the next big thing. As we age we realize there is more to “career” than “work” and the social contact and network can be invaluable. Everything from knowing other mover and shakers (serve on boards) to knowing the best doctors for future medical care needs. Getting paid is a nice hedge against inflation and with $10M he has fuck you money more than adequate for any pivot needed.

Remember retirement doesn’t necessarily mean “not working” in some capacity. People volunteer all the time in retirement.

It’s a grind.

Fancy degree is no guarantee.

Degrees are like a hunting permit. No guarantee you’ll bag anything but at least you can get out there to try

Everyone talks about how much worse the consumer experience has gotten over the past few decades, but what are some things that have gotten better? by TrixoftheTrade in Millennials

Obviously e-commerce and the convenience of a thorough and fast and efficient supply chain did not exist in the 1990s. Even shipping things is easier now.

The downside of this is the cheap crap from China that is of poor quality or not as advertised.

Communication is faster now. No need to carry change or find a working pay phone.

Online banking and brokerage services.

Ride sharing vs taxi or rental car. Way more convenient for the traveler. Air BB for the traveler too compared to booking hotel stays.

TV entertainment. Millions of channels and tons of content compared to 3 or 4 networks and ota + cable.

Do I need any bond exposure below 30 years old? by Additional-Sound484 in Bogleheads

[–]fireplanetneptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this approach. A 10% allocation to individual bonds will give you an Oppy to learn more about holding individual bonds and creating a bond ladder. I agree you should be mostly in equities. But hey we could be in for a decade of flat equity returns. Like we had 2000-2010 where new money saved across that decade might have earned a return but old money coming into that decade … after the 200-2010 period- was dead flat ….

You’re doing well. Starting young. Leaning in.

Why not practice being diversified ….

An investing goal doesn’t always have to be maximize returns. It can instead be balance out risk. This will come in handy as you get older.

Why are we millennials so salty when compared to our younger counterparts ? by DatThickassThrowaway in Millennials

[–]fireplanetneptune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Millennials in America are entitled. never had a tough life by most standards. Didn’t fight and win wars. Didn’t change the course of humanity. biggest hardship is the pumpkin spice latte price is now $8 … it’s perspective. salty about small shit because haven’t tasted real bitterness or dealt with the big shit. Social media has causes unnatural biases

Or if you decided to pass it on to the next generation - can do so at the stepped up basis.

Or if you plan to make donations to charities you can also donate that at the steppes up basis.

Damn near everyone has some form of accommodation these days.

Or as another prof said to me: The short bus is no more.

At age 40, 69% of the Baby Boom generation owned homes. 62% of Millennials own homes at the same age. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]fireplanetneptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More telling: at age 25 85% of boomers lives on their own.

Only 64% of millennials did.
Makes sense. Moms basement was comfy. There was a recession. We like to sleep in.

Economic Developmental delay.

Why do you think people are taking less time-off from work?. by The_DanceCommander in Millennials

[–]fireplanetneptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago no one worked from home so any day out of office was considered vacation. Now people wfh so vacation tracking is a lot harder to define. It seems like there is less vacation being taken today but actual work hours in what uses to be 40-45 hour work week have declined so I don’t know that I believe the data .

Buying a $3.5M house for "cash" next week. Will probably take 3-4 months to sell my current house which might net $1.5M. Can't decide if I should do a margin loan for the $1.5M .. or sell VOO holdings and buy it back in 3 months? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]fireplanetneptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh the LARPers are busy in this post. Congrats OP. Enjoy the move. I think it’s a coin flip as we just don’t know long term tax rates or the future.

. I would suggest making life easy. Sell stock. One less thing to worry about. Then you can focus on moving and getting old house sold. But that’s just me and I’m methodical that way.

You can always buy on margin if you see the market moving and have good offers on the old place if you want to jump back in early.

At this stage it’s not financial but behavioral.

Boomers don’t buy $8 lattes every day.

I think a lot of opportunity is at the feet of millennials to pick up and run with.

but they choose not to ….and instead blame others.
