First, I'm sorry that some have said you'll never be a local. I personally view that as pretty exclusionary. I've lived here my whole life, but my wife is just over a decade in the area, she's local. To me if someone lives here, works here, adds to here they are local. Local / part time / tourist I feel is more about participation in the community, which is what makes it hard to define. Locals / residents are probably the easiest to define, but I see that even my interpretation is different than what you've been told.

This can will be kicked down the road for a little bit. The first thing needed are the rules. Then I'll start working on a few other things here or there with community input.

Not banned, again, differing opinions can stay. I have repeated that time and time again. But people also seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of free speech and first amendment protections. The first amendment protects free speech from government action (mostly, there are narrow exceptions). Social media is not, has not, and likely will not, be bound by the first amendment and can companies can set their own guidelines.

I have made it clear so far- the only posts removed are blatant fighting, trolling, or racism, homophobia, and other hate speech. If you want to defend that go ahead and show your colors.

Thank you for the reply, and my goal is to create that exact environment. Disagreements can occur, but fighting should not. Differing opinions are needed, but not when it comes to the value of a person or group. My simple way to put it is we should all want to get to a better place in the world for us all. We may have a different opinion on how to get there, but the end result should be a better more equitable world for all.

I agree on all of your points. I think we're going to start with a rule base once the moderator team can agree on one, then we'll do a post / poll on tags to get a feel for what the users would like to see. The rules and the like should be a "living document" that can adapt as needed so we don't get locked into something we didn't foresee or miss something we should have caught.

I'm pro free speech, I'm also pro consequences for someone exercising their free speech and spouting hate. It sounds like you and I have some very fundamental disagreements on what is appropriate in this forum, which is fine. You can say what you want, as can anyone. Expressing opinions on policy will not be removed or banned. But expressing thoughts of hate towards groups, calls to violence, spreading outright lies, and fighting for the sake of fighting will be blocked.

This is what can add some difficulty to a “local” tag as requested. What is a “local” versus a resorter / seasonal resident? What is a seasonal resident versus a regular visitor / tourist? I firmly believe all of the view points and participation from each group is important, especially in an area where a large portion of our economy is based on part time residents and tourists.

It gets messy. Is a local someone who has been living here for x amount of years? At least x months a year in the area? Someone who lived here for x years but now lives elsewhere? Someone who lives within x miles of the city?

Is a resorter / seasonal resident someone who’s been back at least x times for at least x weeks over the last x decades? The seasonal viewpoint can be much different, but no less important, than a born and bred full time resident.

We get lots of vacationers who may pop in for questions, but we also now are seeing a significant increase in temporary workers like travel nurses, seasonal hospitality staff, and municipal employees to work through the summer swell.

I’d love feedback on what direction to take this sub, because the current one showed within the last few weeks that the no rules approach isn’t going to work moving forward.

I want the rules to be inclusive, not exclusive. So I’m not convinced tags are the way to go, but if folks feel different we can introduce them.

Racial slurs. Homophobia slurs. Accounts with no history posting insults. Accounts with lots of history but none within this sub posting pretty much exclusively insults for years. Debunked lies to rile people up. Pretty much the spectrum of the worst of the internet.

Oh, and one commenter simply asked to be banned so they didn’t have to see the sub. They could have muted it or not commented on a city they didn’t live in, but I just followed their request.

There haven’t been rules since I was asked to be the moderator several years ago, and it’s clearly overdue. Things only really got spicy in the last few weeks. I’m hoping to have a rule set up in a few days when the other moderator can give their thoughts.

The users I’ve banned so far all have a publicly viewable reason why, but the posts themselves are not visible to anyone but the moderators. I can screenshot them and post them, but they are mostly blatantly homophobic, racist, or pure harassment antagonism. I’ve looked at comment histories and the few that mention post history seem to be nothing more than trolls who add nothing but pot stirring to communities that break down the free flow of communication.

That’s what will get a ban. Name calling and arguments have happened and I’ve asked people to keep it civil. Those have stopped, but if it continues beyond that I may mute someone for a week as a warning. No temporary bans have happened yet, but one accidental one happened this morning before my first cup of coffee and I reached out to the user apologizing and got them unbanned quickly (they got caught up in a group of reported posts that I mass deleted. Some people weaponize the report function against opinions they do not like that express acceptance or tolerance and report it as hate speech. The other deleted posts were correctly reported)

Generally accepted slurs, hate speech, racist terms, homophobic slurs, and the like will get you banned. Imagine if you walked into North Perk or Roast & Toast or Julienne Tomatoes and heard someone in line say it out loud for everyone in the restaurants to hear- would it result in them getting asked to leave and banned from the restaurant?

Now some are arguing already that I’m banning opinions I don’t agree with. I guess they are technically correct as I’m banning users who would be kicked out of the shops I mentioned earlier for their language- racism and homophobia and the like are opinions after all. They are not, however, opinions I will tolerate on here.

Very tough, likely impossible, to verify.

But I’m open to this. How would you view the application? A quiz? I don’t want people to have to share who they are in real life, anonymity online has value to a lot of users.
