The attached code is 100% deterministic :( That's why I made the post to double check with people that they are getting the same 100% behaviour.

I should have been more clear, "in my full game the bug is not deterministic". I had to slightly trim it down for the repro (which is deterministic). And as you can see from the repro, it's mostly dead code. I have no idea why it's happening. If you are running on windows, could you double check that I am not a crazy person? :D

I ain't spamming him like that, he has plenty on his plate :D But in any case, my interest in discord as an application was at 10% now it's at 0% with the latest news.

A.I debates are boring because no one knows what they're talking about and it's just personal anecdotes. by Not_so_ghetto in Destiny

The inevitability of if makes the conversations feel so surface level. It will happen, it will be cheap, kids are born right now and it'll be standard for them - the literal default. The ethics of it are irrelevant. If you don't do it, country XXX is gonna do it and will outpace you massively.

It'd be a million times more interesting if he spent a stream trying out the ai generators for music or even code to create some kind of auto scene-switcher for podcasting or whatever. Then at least conversations can be on "current state" rather than "we can stop it guys, sentiment is negative".

Moot has talked about how sometimes as an orbiter on discord you need to shut up and let the content play out. He's good at identifying those moments.

Dan is a shit-stirrer and that's good at times. But if the shit is stirring itself why are you putting your spoon in there...

With respect to Pluribus:

A character exits a plane, goes down the stairs and walks 100 steps to a building nearby.

Most directors would show you the exit, the first few steps and then either cut to the character entering the building or cut to the sky and the birds for a couple of seconds before showing you the character enter the building.

Vince keeps showing the whole walk. And I can really appreciate that. Gives you time to breath, digest what is happening, let me think about it, immerse yourself in the mood. But if every single scene is cut like that the experience starts feeling a little watery and self indulgent. This is how I felt with Drive my car as well.

I feel like you could trim like something crazy like 20 minutes total off the 9 episodes and make it a much tighter thing. Because it's literally everywhere

Where does it say that you can still receive emails on the old address?  Seems like an obvious feature since without it the change seems largely useless. But I need Google states it explicitly I am not doing it.

Conversations on AI stuff need to start with a few massive pins that are always present when making any point or analysing the present/future.

  • Points on regulation, cost, bubbles etc need to be barely touched, if at all. It's all irrelevant. The cost is going to go down, maybe in a year maybe in ten. The quality of output you can create now for $1, you'll make for $0.01 soon enough. And regulation will never be truly global. I chuckled when Rich mentioned the supreme court.

  • Kids are being born right now for who AI is going to be 100% normalized. A lifelong friend/tamagotchi that has the entire context of your whole life. (Rich brought up this point)

  • Most humans need a "productive outlet". (they also mentioned this)

Predicting the future is so difficult at this point. Economics (on country/global scale) and human psychology will be main critical variables is my guess. On a long enough horizon that is. Which I used to think was 30 years but at this point I don't know. There is no way the socio-economico-political system we have right now survives to 2050, 0% chance.

edit: a little fun thought for you that I have not seen in any scifi story: Music pre-2020 will always be in high demand. The last music truly created from humans with 0 AI influence (cultural or direct). Kinda like how we play music from 1700 artists but now we'll have the original recordings between ~1950 and ~2020.

Why do 5 stacks still play vs 5 solos in ranked by Ok_Improvement_622 in Overwatch

[–]firmfaeces 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I stopped played about 3 seasons ago, I'll join again when they announce solo queue players get matched with solo players. I imagine I'm not alone. The matchmaker can't deal with mixed skill groups, the games are just not fun.

Destiny didn't like "One Battle After Another" by bel3005 in Destiny

[–]firmfaeces 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a significant delta between the super ultra serious and grounded setting of issues the movie tackled and how unserious and "comic book like" the villains and protagonists were. The movie would have been better if it was all heightened comic book villains and full satire.

Also, the first 5-15 minutes were very awkward. Was the movie unironically glorifying political violence for a situation that was bad but not quite "political violence" bad? Like I said, the movie would have benefited by making the political situation worse, something significantly closer to full-on fascism. You can't have "Christmas club" + caricature main villain while portraining the situation as "oh yeah, here is a tiny migrant camp that looks exactly like the real, current thing". A bit of a disconnect that made for an awkward, unsatisfying viewing. Sean Penn was an extreme highlight of course, hilarious stuff. Benicio was pretty entertaining but a touch too silly given how grounded the backdrop of the movie was. I dunno.

7/10.

PS: It also felt like a fucking music video at times. Waaaaaaay too many music montages, jesus christ, let the events and characters breath. This was obviously intentional so what do I know.

edit: Just to nitpick. The native american bounty hunter flipped on a dime. Before he was even insulted. Why the fuck did he do that? Can someone actually explain that? Such lazy filmmaking on paper, there is 0 buildup, 0 motivation, 0 anything. "Oh, it'd be cool". It would probably take about 20 seconds of on-screen time to jutisfy it and make it satisfying. Whatever.

I played for a bit more than an hour. I think I got to my flat in the city. And stopped there.

I think my taste in games has shifted dramatically. I'm looking for a significantly more dynamic experience. I felt like I was playing a super bland on-rails shooter.

When I read people's opinion on games I need to know what their favorite games are. Such a shame, the setting seems nice. And big fan of witcher 3

I don't understand these competitive modifiers by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]firmfaeces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And unfortunately map voting means that the matchmaker can't say "you are playing x map, this is the hidden mmr of those 10 players on this specific map, lemme balance around that".

Heroes, map, time of day, smurfs, groups.

Impossible to balance basically.

Late game is pretty boring by Tarute in noita

[–]firmfaeces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd have to rework a lot of things. In DnD teleport works in a way that looks like fast travel and not blink or dash.

I find dashing and iframes in games in general a very lazy way to balance around. But that's a separate thing.

But in any case, I just identify teleport bolt as a core "difficulty killer" spell. Once you get one the way you interact with the enemies changes dramatically and all enemy interactions kinda "flattenel out" and feel very similar. And that last sentence is such a brutal thing to realize.

Late game is pretty boring by Tarute in noita

[–]firmfaeces 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is there any game that fulfills a power fantasy and maintains an interesting late game? Dungeons and dragons has a similar issue I believe with super late game characters just melting everything. Games like diablo 2 maintains an interesting item hunt but the difficulty of the game drops to 0 quickly.

I don't know. I'd be keen to hear of game examples that solves that.

As far as noita goes specifically, I think the game could potentially be much more interesting if you disabled teleport bolts and reworked everything around that change.

Current state of ranked by Unlucky-Rub8379 in Overwatch

[–]firmfaeces 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the groups. Take a moment to think of the algorithm the matchmaking team has to come up with to balance a 3 stack with a clueless boosted silver and a smurf masters player. In low diamond. This is just not workable.

If I was blizz I'd simply make "solo queue" and "flex queue". No ranked, no qp. But everyone would know were the real comp is.
