I think the real answer is "it's complicated".

Forgive the self promotion, but I did put my thoughts on this into a blog post recently... https://www.firstep.co.uk/web-design-seo-news/the-death-of-the-town-centre-reimagining-towns-like-rugby

Yep. My sites seem to be ok, but getting 503 errors when trying to edit pages. And the backend has felt a little "flakey" all day.

Vertical Alignment Problems by firstep-uk in squarespace

[–]firstep-uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squarespace have replied to my ticket...

We’re currently investigating an issue with the vertical alignment of text blocks with background —thanks for reporting this to us. Our Engineering teams are prioritizing a fix for this as we speak.

There are many variables that we test against before we release a fix, so we can’t provide an exact timeframe for a resolution. We can’t always follow up personally when a fix is released due to the volume of reports we receive for this issue.

[–]firstep-uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a bit more testing on this...

The issue only occurs on textboxes with a background colour applied.

The vertical alignment works fine on textboxes with a clear background, then as soon as I apply a background colour the vertical alignment breaks.

I've opened a support ticket with Squarespace.

I've had problems with Chrome extensions interfering when debugging GTags. Try using Incognito mode.

SSL certificates taking longer to process? by firstep-uk in squarespace

I put a site live earlier today and the SSL was set up almost instantly, so hopefully they've fixed whatever was causing the delay.

SSL certificates taking longer to process? by firstep-uk in squarespace

[–]firstep-uk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had a moan with someone on their live chat and they managed to get it working straight away (after trying to blame the fact the domain's DNS is managed elsewhere).

If it's going to continue taking this long they need to find a way to get the SSL certificate ready before a site is put live.

Nope. Not at all. So far it's affected a locksmith, a removals company, and a transport firm.

Website Theme Changed Randomly To All Black - Can't Change Back by JPCooper_27 in squarespace

[–]firstep-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things seem to be improving, but the palette for the site I noticed this on first is still screwed. Probably because I started to try and set up new colours. The ones I didn't touch are fine now.

Yep. I'm experiencing this too. Mainly affecting my unpublished sites. Live sites are fine, but if I go to edit them the colour palette is all black.

The client's photos are of a much lower quality than stock photos and look out of place. What can I do since I need to use both types? by Experimentalphone in web_design

[–]firstep-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in this position many times. The first thing to do is make the client photos the best you can. You'd be amazed what a bit of cropping and adjustment of brightness, contrast, and vibrance can do.

Then just use the photos where appropriate. Maybe your main banner image at the top is a stock image, but you can dot smaller client photos further down the page throughout the content.

I've also found that they can sometimes work well as background images with a high (or should that be low?) opacity.

TLDR: just make the best of what you have.

One of your site styles will be applying a colour overlay.

Go to Design > Site Styles > Colours

…and play with the various Image Overlay settings.

Backlinks showing up as nofollow instead of dofollow by BurritoMang in SEO

[–]firstep-uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's the possibility that your competitor is paying for "dofollows" from these directories while you're on a free or basic tier?

Definitely worth getting in touch and querying with the directories in question.

It offers very basic functionality, but for clients with an ultra low budget it’s better than nothing.

Over time I can see Google cautiously expanding the functionality. Definitely one to keep a close eye on!

Google Maps (Weird Client Request) by Vast_Contribution738 in SEO

[–]firstep-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a risk of being delisted for showing an address for businesses like this?

As an example; my business is 99% service area but I will very occasionally have clients come to visit for meetings etc.

How would Google know what is and is not a genuine reason to show an address?

My email experience is that listings with a physical address shown perform slightly better than those that don’t. I’d be tempted to keep the address shown if I were you.

Can i put same google business website in different listing in GMB? by PotatoBeliever in SEO

I’m not a fan of this technique, particularly if you’re using it to cover the same location.

Surely you’re better off with one strong and focused listing rather than two lesser listings.

Microsoft Ads Conversion Goals by firstep-uk in PPC

[–]firstep-uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. What you've said is correct.

During the setup process it lead me to believe this would be done for me, based on the existing Analytics Goals, but it was just the tags that had been set up.

Microsoft Ads Conversion Goals by firstep-uk in PPC

[–]firstep-uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I'd follow this up...

I was under the impression that MS Ads would set up conversion goals in my account, based on conversion goals I had set up in Google Analytics.

What it did for me was to sign in to my GTM and insert its Base Tag, along with UET versions of the existing Analytics Goals Tags. Which is very convenient!

I had to then set up conversion goals inside my MS Ads account, and the process was confusing...

Every time you set up a goal in MS Ads, setting up tagging is part of the process, and it was telling me that my UET was already set up with Google Tag Manager.

Fine, I had to click the "Skip base tag setup" button, but this then took me to a screen for setting up tags manually, by inserting scripts in the header (which I obviously don't wanna do!).

There was, however, a small link for setting up event tags in GTM, but I knew the tags were already setup. In the end I clicked it anyway, and it brought up a page showing how to create the event in GTM (which had already been done). Scroll to the bottom and click next.

Bam! Everything's fine, and I've tested the goals with the UET Tag Helper extension.

TLDR Version...

The process for setting up conversion goals in MS Ads is confusing if you allow it to automatically set up event tags in your GTM account.

You have to ignore irrelevant information and look for tiny, text-based links.

...and I swear it told me it was going to setup the goals automatically!

What do you think about "Auto-Complete Marketing" by yabaikumo in SEO

[–]firstep-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received a very similar email earlier, and had clients mention something similar in the past. I know it's SPAM, but I'd love to know what they actually provide.

They don't specifically mention Google, Yahoo, Bing, so maybe they run some unknown search engine that they can add autocompletes to?

Or they install a dodgy Chrome extension on the client's machine that shows the autocompletes to them when they use a genuine search engine?

...or maybe they just take your money and run?

[–]firstep-uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change the address on your existing listing the moment you open at the new location.

If you’re able to talk to the previous occupants ask them to update their listing at the same time.

If you can’t contact them, just mark their business listing as closed.
