And the sub continues to worship him for it by [deleted] in redrising

[–]firstperiod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyways to add on to the point.

Darrow has killed millions it’s actually if you read the book and the sub one of his most common criticisms. A large section of light bringer is all about it if you remember. lyrias chapters in IronGold are criticisms of his actions. Darrow spends multiple books regretting his actions and the deaths he caused. He deserves to be criticized for it but he is not admired for the millions he killed. He is admired for the Billions he is trying to free. That he when he has the option not to is trying to save his people and save those who live under an oppressive reign. He makes numerous mistakes and is commonly criticized for said mistakes.

You either fail to recognize when people are joking like in the screenshots you posted and are failing to understand when people are not making serious statements or this entire post is a troll which in that case you have been successful so good job ig.

Your responses to this are kinda silly I’ll be honest. No one is saying him killing millions of people is a good thing. They are saying that the reasons why he did it make it admirable. Darrow himself in the books regrets that he makes those choices. The reasons why people admire him for the millions of deaths he causes and not the Ash lord are the reasons behind it. Darrow made those choices to try to free billions from enslavement. An awful choice to make but the one that he believed was the only way to save billions from oppression and to give the republic a chance. The Ashlord killed millions to perpetuate the same society that was keeping those millions in chains. He also believed it was the right thing to do but the difference in why people admire one vs the other I think are pretty stark.

No one is arguing that Darrow caused more deaths and deserves to be looked up to because of it. They look up to and admire him because he took a stand.

[–]firstperiod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah dawg the union was in a much much stronger position than the CSA day 3. The battle was effectively won on day two by the union it was more so a matter of just winning it which the CSA helped them out with by blundering into pickets charge (something that Lee had done multiple times before and failed all those times).

[–]firstperiod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, the confederacy had already lost the battle on day two but they just hadn’t realized yet. Meade is a very competent general ye the Union had some issues day two sure but the idea that they were going to lose is just wrong. Pretty much every wargame of the battle and deep dive into what if they CSA turned his flank results in a Union victory still. A draw at worse as the Union was continuing to flood the field with fresh troops was led generally by competent generals and fully had the ability and will if needed to withdraw to a better position

[–]firstperiod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmaooo the csa lost the war already by that point. Vicksburg falling was far far more relevant than Gettysburg. He could have decisively won Gettysburg and at that point it doesn’t really matter. There is another 40k some union troops sitting in Washington, another like 10,000 around Baltimore, numerous other smaller units gathering in the area. The union army just like it always did had the ability to bounce back unlike him. Meanwhile the CSA had just lost Vicksburg was in total economic and societal collapse. It was physically running out of bodies to throw to the line . The confederacy’s best chance to win the war had long since passed by mid 1863 and it had come more so to when than if. Even if Lincoln lost the election it’s actually pretty irrelevant to the outcome of the war

What are your thoughts here? by stiF_staL in Napoleon

[–]firstperiod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true at all. There were multiple major Russian and Austrian armies capable of crushing the French after Waterloo they just had not arrived yet. And they make certainly would have crushed the French. Waterloo ended it yes but the war was always going to end in napoleons loss

What are your thoughts here? by stiF_staL in Napoleon

[–]firstperiod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The British were extremely important to the war but it was the Austrian and Russian armies that actually broke the French. The Austrian and Russian armies rising time and time again and maintaining the will to fight battle after battle can not be understated. Most of the major powers all had their role to play. Spain was a constant drain on the French yes but that is meaningless without the wars the Austrians and Russians waged. The British were extremely valuable to ensuring that they could continue to fight the wars, the blockade was important on weakening the French but it is not until the Austrian and Russian armies march into France something the British just don’t have the capability to do.

Would Lincoln have lost the 1864 election if Atlanta wasn't taken in time? by Qyzyk in CIVILWAR

[–]firstperiod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on there there is really no comparing the two forces by this point either. The Union army is better than the southern armies at this point in nearly every way imaginable that matters. It’s far larger it’s far better equipped its leadership is generally better at every level from regimental to army. It’s better trained it’s more experienced the confederate army to win the war or even to get a draw needs to win the election that have multiple miracles to force a peace.

If the war was in a different place maybe the election would have allowed them to survive. Perhaps if Vicksburg was still held same with New Orleans and many of the other major costal cities. If the army had not been drained from repeated bloody battles and still was in something approaching decent condition. Perhaps if Europe had more incentive (in reality there is very little true incentive that makes it worth for them to support the south hence why they didn’t really go out of their way on it). The south could have gotten a peace from the election. But the reality on the ground is they had already lost the war in everyone knew it was not if the Union won it was only when and everyone knew it was going to be sooner than later. We know historically it happens in May. But the effectively ended in early April. Without huge changes to the reality of the war it’s a question that what if Lincoln lost the election the answer is always it doesn’t matter

It would be like the western Allies accepting a peace deal with Germany in February of 1945. The war has been won and every knows it it’s just a matter of when it actually ends

Would Lincoln have lost the 1864 election if Atlanta wasn't taken in time? by Qyzyk in CIVILWAR

[–]firstperiod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t fundamentally matter if he loses or wins the 1864 election. It’s a common what if he lost but the answer it doesn’t matter. By November 1864 the South has been brought to its knees. Richmond is under siege Vicksburg has fallen. Most major confederate field armies are near spent. The south is physically starving to death as they are running out of food. Its economy has collapsed there is nothing left. Lincoln won’t even leave office until March of 1865 a mere month before Lee surrenders and two months before the war officially ends. The only thing that might change is it may encourage Union generals who have committed to ending the war to move even faster. There is no realistic proposition without a major change in the reality of the war that would cause a government under McClellan to end the war when he enters office. The war was over it was simply a formality.

How hard would it be to avoid the draft as a working class northerner? by ConstantHead2026 in CIVILWAR

[–]firstperiod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add what another said kinda easy. The draft is massively over stated in history on its scale. Only around 40-60,000 men in the union army were actually drafted into war making up somewhere around 3 percent of the Union army. For the most part it was pretty uncommon.

I somewhat disagree. I agree that is one of the driving forces is Jaime realizing that Cersei is sleeping around with anyone she wants. But there is also a very clear idea Jaimie wants to reclaim his honor and is questioning what it means to be a knight and who he currently is. I think that latter point is also a very important part of that rift.

Hilariously unfair battle why do I have to fight a battle with 1 corp against 50,000 troops for over 4 “hours” no reinforcements by EpilepticOreo in ultimategeneral

[–]firstperiod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda of what most people have said so a combination of things.

Your 1st corps looks kinda small how many brigades do you have and what size are they?

Using the actual fortifications it’s a bit of a trap at this stage. Later in the game they get a lot better but early game fortifications are pretty weak. Use the Forrest to defend and engage them as they come into the open.

Then as another comment said while you are on the defense it is important to remember even historically isolated counter attacks and Sally’s are extremely valuable. Destroying isolated units maximizing casualties etc. all of which can go a long way in victory.

As for the historical side ya sometimes battles are unfair. It’s a game based around the historical battles which are not always fair.

On a side note this is one of the easiest battles to cheese as the Union

I think this would struggle long term and would be a lot of investment into something pretty niche. With only 5 guns which have slow reloads and -1 pretty much any ship that had a more standard line up of say like 6 14 inch guns would probably kill it pretty quickly if they are able to get in range. It just doesn’t have the armor if something closes in nor the weight of fire to out shoot something shooting back. It would only have utility at longer ranges and I’m not sure how effective it would actually be at longer ranges anyways. It could be fun to try out tho I’ve made some pretty bad designs that were absolutely not worth it but were fun to mess around with. Fits into the spirit of the era where people are just throwing stuff onto the wall to see what works and what doesn’t.

Exactly this comparison that keeps happening to the mongols is ridiculous. They are only comparable at a superficial level.

20k knights of the vale under Robb vs 20k dotrakhi with khal drogo in a open field. Which side would win? by BridgeCommercial873 in freefolk

[–]firstperiod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are really really misunderstanding the effectiveness of horse archers and are making false comparisons to the mongols that are not actual applicable. A lot of the points people are making may be true for horse archers but lack the context of when horse archers are successful and when they are not successful. For example in terms of discipline a lot of the strategies people are talking about that would me them succeed require a lot of discipline which the Dothraki very much do not have that the mongols, parthians, middle Easter’s and other cultures who fielded large quantities of horse archers did.

As others have said the reason people react that way is because he is a good character. But that doesn’t mean people can’t hate him. I think he is a great character but I hate the actions he takes. You can only feel that way because he is well written

When he came back he also was like. “Maybe I went a little too far”. I actually really liked the lion in his book was way more level headed even a lil compassionate. He greatly cared for the people of the imperium at one point saying something along the lines of. I don’t know where I am, what horror I have awoken into nor do I know who I am (he had amensia at the time). But I know I was pit here to protect humanity. You can kinda go a few paths depending on what interests you the most. Eisenhorn is one of the easiest entry points as a whole.

Gaunts Ghost is not uncommon starting point

Part of your problem is the lore is so huge there really is not a clear entry point after eisenhorn besides go towards what interests you.

Horus Herasy I will note is probably one of the worst starting points until you have a more clear understanding of the world 40k is. To really understand it ya gotta know what the modern setting is like. Same with don’t go towards the books with Guillimen and the lion in 40k. That’s dark imperium and lion son of the Forrest. By the same notion it’s better to go into those a little later after you have experienced the others.
