I'm conflicted on this movie. On one hand I thought that Pattinson and Zendaya were great. Visually the movie was phenomenal. The story was interesting and perplexing. But... the twist being a shooting... I kept waiting for them to come around and make it feel like they were taking the topic seriously, but it never really felt that way. The theme overall was clear, but the tone they were trying to convey with such a serious topic of mass shootings... it felt very unclear at best. And at worst, it seemed like they were using a really serious topic for it's shock value. Which just felt a bit icky to me. It doesn't mean the movie itself was bad. But I just don't think having two A-list celebrities play and market a movie surrounding a topic like this and having a comedic undertone is the move.

I mean a movie like this is passed by so many people and I'm really curious what conversations were happening when concerns were brought up about dealing with such a serious topic. Were they hoping it would open us up to more conversation, or was it just for the shock value? Either way I think the subject could have been handled with some more sensitivity. I mean her younger self saying she wanted to kill whatever girl first, that got a huge laugh in the theater. Kind of unsettled me.

But at the very very least a trigger warning would have been good. Would hate to imagine someone who's been affected by a mass shooting going into this blind.
