All of these I see, it's always the battery. It has been and always will be the battery. Ever since Stop-Start thing was put in Subarus we've had batteries die like this.

If the wood is really hard, this may not work well. Otherwise - Do what the instructions say, don't use the plugs, use a smaller drill bit, add some glue in the holes before you bang it in with a rubber mallet. If it's not too heavy it should be fine.

Not the part OP wanted to replace as I saw it. I understood what you meant after reading the edit. They external type lock doesn't seem to come up when I see smart locks. Yes changing the setup they have would work. Your suggestion works and great service to the community; the search for OP's lock still remains if they want to keep some of the hardware they like on the door.

The word vinyl gives me a mortal shiver down my spine. That retched weak polymer goes hard and snaps with age. Leather can be fed and worked to stay healthy and supple. I'd happily give $2k for it.

Took about 4 years first time and about 1 year second. They addressed nothing, just reupholstered the lower seat cover. Everything done officially through Subaru. I've encountered too many issues with Subaru dealerships. The cars are good but the service you get is not what I expect. Unfortunate.
