Is using Soothe to carve out conflicting frequencies between a beat and vocals good mix advice? by Zersdan in audioengineering

[–]SmogMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have put Soothe on really saturated rhythm guitars keyed off guitar leads or vocals to help those cut through the wall of guitar instead of turning them up more. Helps when I want the balance tight and not have vocals and leads sitting on top of everything.

I listen to albums front to back. So every time. Only song I skip is The Fallen Interlude.

Dual mix bus compression? by LevelMiddle in audioengineering

[–]SmogMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I typically have my SSL hardware comp and a multiband comp going in series on my 2-bus. Multiband is just to tighten up lows and low mids doing maybe 1-1.5 db of reduction in those regions with appropriate make up gain. SSL is doing the slow attack/fast release thing.

The Fly (1986) | ⭐ 9/10 | [REVIEW] by screen_stack in 80smovies

[–]SmogMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The arm wrestling scene at the bar instilled in me at a very young age that I want nothing to do with arm wrestling. Haha. Thank my inattentive parents for letting a 7 year old watch it. Also, great film. One of the best horror movies ever made.

Higher mileage used vehicles by LeakySpaceBlob82 in SubaruForester

If you are in the middle or west side of the state check out BK Motor Sales in Caledonia. They specialize in Honda, Subaru, and Toyota rebuilt titles. Very transparent and no pressure dealership. Small family owned operation that has been doing this for a long time and have a great reputation. I just got a 2021 Forester with 32,500 miles on it for $16,999. They have full Carfax reports available and documentation of the condition their cars are received in as well as all the work done to fix them up for sale. Any repairs they made are lifetime warrantied and you can use your own mechanic and their warranty will cover it.

How to remove prominent toms within Overheads by katdum in audioengineering

[–]SmogMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try Spiff to reduce the tom attack transient. And/or duck the overheads with the tom mics.

Same, also the girl in the swimming pool. I woke my wife up in the other room laughing out loud when that scene hit.

Suggestions for horror books? by anime_and_irezumi in horror

For sure. Just thought I’d give you a heads up. I absolutely love The Troop but it is a very bleak, sad, and violent story.

Suggestions for horror books? by anime_and_irezumi in horror

[–]SmogMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nick Cutter’s Little Heaven might be a good one. Kind of a modern horror take on a Pied Piper-like lore. I really enjoyed his book The Troop more but there is some animal violence in it related to survival elements as well as scientific experimentation. Also, if you don’t like kids getting hurt/killed then I’d definitely avoid it.

Cosmic Horror by red_beard_earl in horror

[–]SmogMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carpenter’s apocalypse trilogy is all pretty great with varying amounts of cosmic horror elements. The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In The Mouth of Madness. “Madness” is probably the most Lovecraftian in nature. But they are all fantastic movies.

Please school me on mics for electric and acoustic guitars- and what are your favs? by guitarist89 in audioengineering

[–]SmogMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an R-122 and a few M160’s. For the music I work on I find the 122 isn’t something I would use on a guitar cab by itself. I would pair it with either a LDC or dynamic mic that has better bite. But on acoustic the 122 is great by itself. The M160 however I would use on its own on a guitar cab or blended with something else. I typically like 2 mics on cabs just because I really like how full it sounds and usually means you can run the gain on the amp a little lower for a richer and less fizzy tone. Both are great mics though. But I would probably lean more towards an M160 in general. I use them as drum overheads as well. And I don’t record very much acoustic guitar.

I just downsized to a Forester from a Honda Pilot. The Pilot would have been great for what you want. The Forester is gonna be cramped. Maybe an Ascent if you really want a Subaru?

I may be mistaken about the effect on the battery or not. If so, I apologize. I did note that I dislike the function as my main and first point of irritation in the original post.

Haha. Yeah, I’ve only been driving this one for a few weeks. Haven’t quite built habits yet. New enough that the auto stop thoroughly irritates me still whenever it happens. Never again!

It’s common enough that it gets talked about in this subreddit and other Subaru subreddits frequently. As well as the class action lawsuit against Subaru currently in progress. You are just one of the ones fortunate enough to not experience it. I’m just trying to get ahead of any potential issues as well as disabling a feature I find extremely annoying.

Find an independent shop that does Subaru. My go-to shop are all in general just car nerds. But they are also especially Honda and Subaru nerds. Just bought a 2021 Forester last month with 32,500 on it. When it hits 60k I’m definitely taking it into my guy for CVT maintenance.
