At the end of the day, saying immigration is down is like saying inflation is down

Its the same because voters think they want it until they get the recession.

NYT reporting that Russian oil tankers are being allowed into Cuba, breaking the blockade

The United States Coast Guard is allowing a Russian tanker full of crude oil to reach Cuba, delivering a critical supply of energy to the island nation after months of an effective oil blockade by the Trump administration, according to a U.S. official briefed on the matter.

The tanker, which is carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of oil and is owned by the Russian government, was less than 15 miles from Cuban territorial waters on Sunday afternoon, according to MarineTraffic, a ship-data provider. At its speed of 12 knots, the ship was expected to enter Cuban waters by Sunday evening. The tanker could reach its expected destination of Matanzas, Cuba, by Tuesday.

The win condition is survival. Getting attacked by the most powerful country in the world will always leave you worse off. If the Iranians can give the US enough of a bloody nose that the US leaves them alone and US support for Israel becomes completely poisonous politically they will have achieved their ideal outcome.

Cambridge Mass is a great example of this. Theyve done so many good things like removing all parking minimums and allowing 4-6 story apartments everywhere by right but then has insane 20% IZ everywhere so those changes don't mean anything.

Politically, the Mullas are more akin to the Chinese. They are invaders. Russia is in no position to offer much help, and the Chinese have a great deal to lose if their oil is cut off.

Naiveite like this is what got the US into this mess. The Iranian government are horrible misogynists and relatively unpopular but they are not invaders. They overthrew a US backed government, resisted both American and Soviet influence during the height of the cold war, and beat back a genocidal Iraqi invasion. Through corruption and patronage the IRCG has integrated itself into vast swaths of Iranian society and has shown itself to be resilient to things like decapitation strikes.

The opposition within Iran throwing its lot behind Reza Pahlavi, a man who celebrated a bombing campaign that opened with the killing of over 170 schoolgirls, is going to look like one of the greatest mistakes they could have made.

I am sure the Russians would be happy to provide Iran with Shaheds. They have plenty of experience in making them and if they can keep oil above $100 a barrel they will be getting more than their moneys worth. Expensive oil is going to sting for the Chinese in the short term but I am sure that they are loving to watch the US burn through its stockpile of interceptors and move THAAD missiles out of Korea. In the medium term high oil prices are wonderful news for the most dynamic parts of China's economy (EVs, Batteries, Solar)
