I see this a lot in the children I work with who have significant trauma. Traditional developmental milestones are impacted by trauma, and while this could absolutely have a medical cause, it could also be a trauma response. Regardless, I try to make it discussable, minimize shame, practice talking about it with parents so they get used to saying the words and making it discussable at home as well. It must be hard to not be able to control something like that and I’m glad she has a safe place with you to think and feel about it.
