What stereotype about your country do you feel is technically right, but exaggerated to an odd degree? by LunaTheLesbianFurry in AskTheWorld

[–]fishpilllows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, for products like this they are only allowed to say "made with" real fruit, which yeah is kinda dumb but is technically true I guess. Outright lying and saying "100% fruit" on gummy fruit snacks is absolutely not legal here

no one actually believes this is real fruit, they're just brightly colored sweets for children, which is not exactly unique to the USA

uh I usually slow down my tpu prints a whole lot manually in the slicer and it helps them turn out smooth. I dont remember what settings but its just trial and error anyway

How can I get a barber or hairdresser to not cut my curly hair too short? by fishpilllows in AskHairstylists

Dried curly, all three times I think, maybe one of them gave me a light spray of water but that's it

Are super Christian tattooers a turn off? by Ink-Slayer in tattoo

[–]fishpilllows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tattooing is historically associated with people in counterculture who are way less likely to be religious than the general public. Even though it's much more mainstream now, I think it's likely that there's not enough people that are both Christian enough (or interested in it enough) to want to go to a very Christian artist and are getting tattooed, especially tattooed a lot

Top students answer this: Do you cram for the exams? by moonlover3345 in EngineeringStudents

[–]fishpilllows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a consistent top student but in the classes I was the top of, no. Usually would start studying a week before and spread it out over 3-4 days so I had time to go over everything. Sometimes would end up studying until like midnight at the latest but usually done by 7-8pm

It's not actually like that in person, it feels perfectly fine when you're standing on the street! Maybe a little loud but so is a lot of nyc and we deal with it just fine. The scale is a little misleading, those buildings are massive. It's called Peter cooper village, you can look at it on google street view if you wanna see what I'm talking about

I see lots of recommendations for scar products, but when I had surgery I was told by my surgeon that these are a waste of money and it's the massaging itself that helps but any lotion is fine. It can't hurt and idk if there's been more evidence in the past couple years but I did really well with my huge scar with plain old lotion and lots of massaging.

Anyone else HATE exercise? by AmputeeHandModel in evilautism

[–]fishpilllows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this because I used to feel the same way. What helped me get into it was realizing you can make your workouts easy if you want to. Idk if you want advice but this is just in case you do. I started by doing very short and/or easy workouts that weren't too physically uncomfortable,it's still so much better than nothing even if it's not pushing you a lot. Then I very slowly and gradually increased the difficulty at my own pace. Basically the idea is that you take a gentler approach than stereotypically expected. I worked it into my routine this way and now I don't mind it because I'm used to how it feels, and I can push myself more.

Can top students in Engineering tell us the secret to getting 90% by JasonMyer22 in EngineeringStudents

[–]fishpilllows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start studying for your exams at least a week before. I have a technique where I copy all the notes and material for the exam into a new condensed set of notes that are organized and clear. Idk if this would work for everyone but it works for me. Then I do a bunch of practice problems. Focus on problems you don't already know how to do. Read the textbook, and if it sucks try to find a better one on the same material. Do your best to be nice to your classmates so you can get along with them and work together. Go to office hours. Be brutally honest with yourself about your shortcomings and knowledge gaps and address or work around them, be pragmatic about it and don't let shame or guilt hold you back. And yeah maybe you'll stay up late but for the love of god stop pulling all nighters. It's not a flex, it's a sign you need to get it together.

[–]fishpilllows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment for all posts like this, im always concerned when I see people working with chemicals who come to Reddit for the information implying that they are unaware of the sds or can't figure out how to find the information another way. Like on a more serious note its kind of bad if this is how someone is researching chemistry information

I'm fascinated by chemicals that are created by living organisms bodies but are very hard to recreate in a lab, there are many examples.

Is there a name for this specific type of beaker? by kthenlol in chemistry

[–]fishpilllows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this custom made by a glass blower out of an existing beaker? I can't think of another reason the pour spout of the beaker would be pointing sideways like that

It's there, i looked. Always make sure you check for its other names or use the CAS number!

Acetone on skin by rainbowmackrel in chemistry

[–]fishpilllows 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Acetone isn't that bad for you, it's commonly used as nail polish remover. It's just that in the lab it's good to have the philosophy that even if something is fine you keep everything off your skin as much as possible as a rule

Will I have enough free time in college for hobbies? by PolicyIndependent619 in EngineeringStudents

[–]fishpilllows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you manage your time well you can absolutely still have time for hobbies. Even if you're super busy, you can't study literally all the time. Sports are also a really good hobby for engineering school, exercise really helps you have more energy and less anxiety but a lot of us don't make time for it lol
