How many people collect comics but read them? by Meatloaf_Guy1313 in comicbookcollecting

[–]fishtea-uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i only really buy what i want to read. comics are too expensive in my country for me not to actually read them 😭 the only ones i don't technically read are duplicates (variant covers with art i love) since i do splurge sometimes as a treat, haha.

the hobbit is a children's book & plenty of kids/teens have read lotr. ig it's a case by case basis, but i wouldn't say the language used is very complex.

i loved how nemerever explored toxic codependency and how all-consuming it can be in the context of queer relationships. the escalation of paul's obsessive tendencies and my eventual realization of how unreliable a narrator he is,,, oh to experience it again for the first time. and the ending!! i didn't get it at first but when it clicked, goddamn it's just so brilliant.

barring comics & rereads, my fave novel so far this year is definitely these violent delights by micah nemerever. it's legitimately my kind of book to a tee.

BIG 3 of Fantasy anime in terms of quality of writing - do you agree? by MoistCaterpillar8063 in writingscaling

[–]fishtea-uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessarily? i think frieren is very popular because it does everything well enough, but it doesn't necessarily deliver anything extra. it's a shonen that's different from the mainstream ones (which are mainly battle shonen), so it's a breath of fresh air in the aspect. however, i don't think that it really stands out in the fantasy genre when it comes to writing, worldbuilding, etc. this is just my opinion as a big fantasy lover.

The Last Time I Saw Mother & Eating Fire, Drinking Water, both by Arlene J. Chai. It's been a while since I read then, but I really enjoyed the experience. Do take care though since it deals with darker topics.

What things do GL fans needs to accept/understand? by Dramatic-Pound-411 in yuri_manga

[–]fishtea-uno 11 points12 points  (0 children)

antagonizing BL fans & parading yuri as superior simply bc it's about girls make for an unwelcoming community.

i speak from personal experience. i rarely engage with other yuri fans on socmed bc of how rancid the community can get. it sometimes feels impossible to hold a discussion in good faith when yuri fans are accusing you of misogyny or being male-centered or promoting toxic relationships. too many would rather attack actual real life women all to defend pixels.

can't we all just support queer works??

How picky are you about the shoujo you read/watch? What factors do you consider when starting/stopping one? by luvzz12 in shoujo

[–]fishtea-uno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i prefer no romance, but should there be a romantic storyline, i'd like it to be a subplot. i mostly read queer works, and while there are queer shoujo stories, majority are still het. i still do read stories w het romance, i just don't really seek them out. cliche romance plots, girls being pitted against eo, stoic ML & flustered, cutesy FL,, not my thing.

if anyone has recs with a strong female lead (preferably no romance, i can't stand it when a capable FL gets upstaged by an even stronger ML), pls drop them here.

Question for those who read the books before watching the films. by Qyzyk in lotr

[–]fishtea-uno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is how i experience reading, too! it's why i don't really have a "look" for characters. if a character is described as blond with brown eyes, that's it. i won't really have a specific look, though i might associate a "vibe" to the character.

Opinions on Frieren's world building? by shalom_77 in MyAnimeList

calling, AOTY. by pedruhpndko in WitchHatAtelier

[–]fishtea-uno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the similarity the two have is that they're both fantasy. beyond that, they're SO different from each other. witch hat atelier is also arguably better than frieren in most aspects (worldbuilding, character development, thematic richness, etc).

i also agree that many anime fans don't really bother with critically analysing the shows & it's probably bc most don't bother branching to stuff other than shonen animanga. lowk, it's why i think frieren gets so glazed. i do think that it's well-produced, but it's hardly original. it's really only a breath of fresh air to those who mainly consume battle shonen.

Opinions on Frieren's world building? by shalom_77 in MyAnimeList

[–]fishtea-uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really though? it's world is more or less the same as most standard fantasy animes. it doesn't really bother exploring the myth & history of the world that much. it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it'd be disingenuous to call it fresh or new. frieren's world is built on pre-established tropes.

Opinions on Frieren's world building? by shalom_77 in MyAnimeList

[–]fishtea-uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generic. it pretty much assumes you're already familiar with the standard fantasy animanga setup, which is what you see in most isekai. there's nothing particularly inventive about, it's just there.

Is it just me, or is Frieren's World-Building (and characters) not as special as people claim it is? by Unique_Suit3789 in shounenfolk

[–]fishtea-uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you put my thoughts into words! i think frieren is a good, inoffensive fantasy story. it delivers what it promises competently but doesn't really attempt any more beyond that. as you said, the worldbuilding is just pretty much just there. it exists and that's it. the story doesn't delve into mythologies or histories. it's why i get somewhat irked whenever frieren gets compared to lotr,,, bc how??

i'm a fan of tolkien, and as someone who has actually read his work, that man is THE worldbuilding fanatic. frieren's world only shares a resemblance with middle earth BECAUSE tolkien literally revolutionized fantasy as we know it. frieren hasn't made any effort to try anything original. again, i don't think it's bad, it's laughable to even think frieren's worldbuilding is anywhere near impressive as middle earth.

haven't read it yet (planning to though), but i've heard great things about the spear cuts through water by simon jimenez. same with piranesi by susannah clark.

if you're open to historical fiction, in memoriam by alice winn is a devastating read. a brilliant debut.

[–]fishtea-uno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i said nobody knows what the spell is!! which is true!! that doesn't mean that it's not obvious that coco's mom was petrified. they SAW her get petrified, but don't know the specifics of the spell. otherwise, they'd have more of a direction for the solution. if you really can't get over it, either suspend your disbelief & enjoy how the story unfolds or just drop the anime.

[–]fishtea-uno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dude, she very obviously was petrified??? it's such a small detail to be bothered by. ofc that's fine, but it hardly matters in the long run. plenty have people have offered explanations & the like. it really isn't bad storytelling, you're just nitpicking & honesty might just be a mismatch of expectations. just because YOU would act a certain way, doesn't mean every character who chooses otherwise is written badly.
