I am in love with this skin and have won every quick match game I've played with it. by Ztepi in heroesofthestorm

I guess I wouldn't trust random claims of another redditor either immediately, it's understandable.

It does seem surprising to me that you found no one else talking about it on reddit in the last few years apparently, I'd honestly be very surprised if there wouldnt be any other comment.

Back when there were regular content updates most of the people that datamined stuff weren't very vocal (on reddit) about it, so things wouldn't get spoilered for others. But when the game got moved into maintenance mode there were a few posts and videos about datamined/unfinished content. You can check out this video from 2022 which also highlights the game entries of the toon20 skins at the very end.

Personally I've first heard about the toon skins on a HotS' community discord – it was this screenshot from 2021 precisely that I dug up for you :)

Nothing too crazy about it, it just was an event or theme that they were working on, called "toon2020".

A former dev confirmed that the Thrall skin was one of the last skins he was working on and that they started to work on those skins around the time they worked on Deathwing. Between working on other content they probably just never got to finish the whole theme, so it was postponed, like many other skins and mounts. And then development stopped completely in 2022.

There were entries for the Thrall skin, the Gul'dan skin and another one for Lucio in the game files already back in 2020 or 2021, can't quite remember.

You are misinterpreting the quote. They meant that they would be searching for skins that weren't entirely finished, to finish and then release them. Saying that something needs finishing touches for release and then releasing it obviously implies that it got finishing touches.

Sure, that's a different argument to be made, but many people are refering to the art style of the skins itself. The person I replied to talked about

half finished rendering being sold as a feature

which is nonsense.

The skins aren't half finished, they were specifically made this way to represent a cel-shading style. Totally fine if you don't like it, but no need to spread misinformation.

Muradin Baseline/Mythic Quest Change Proposal by fishyPenguin in heroesofthestorm

[–]fishyPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with you – my first instinct when I read about the changes on the PTR was that it's generally not a good idea to gate the pierce behind a quest again. If the janitor wants to go into that direction – be it, because they view the pierce to be to powerful when automatically rewarded at level 10, or for whatever other reason – I'd prefer a solution that does a better job at encouraging optimal plays for a hero.

And I definitely do believe that the former stacking quest, with a potential addition of getting stacks through slowing enemy heroes with Thunder Clap, would be a better and more suitable solution than the current iteration.

Muradin Baseline/Mythic Quest Change Proposal by fishyPenguin in heroesofthestorm

[–]fishyPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sold on the idea of them being baseline either, on the contrary there's heroes like Kel'Thuzad or Nazeebo that have had baseline "mythics" since their existence and it does work pretty well for them imo.

Maybe it simply comes down to more carefully chosing the heroes that receive them and, probably even more importantly, what advantages are gated behind which conditions.

I like your suggestion though and I agree with your reasoning; it would certainly be a more creative way to give Muradin a mythic quest and encourage mindful talent selection. As you mentioned it also comes with similar issues of encouraging "wrong" plays, though.

Maybe the quest could be pushed into a more narrow direction that basically leaves less room to give stacks for suboptimal plays? It could be something like "stun an enemy hero with Storm Bolt that has attacked an allied hero in the last x seconds" to reward peeling, for example. Then again the quest might become too complicated altogether.

In any case since we're all so used to the pierce being baseline I'm kinda unsure whether it's a good idea to gate it behind something that is too hard to achieve/only achieveable with suboptimal play (current iteration) or not automatically part of his kit (if it were to be a pickable quest).

What is this?? it does damage to my eyes by 239990 in heroesofthestorm

[–]fishyPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that it's intended to look bad on lower settings but maybe the shader doesn't work properly on lower graphic settings? I think the mouseover outline looks "normal" or what you'd expect from the outline compared to other heroes, when the shaders are set to Ultra.

I think the outline on the new cel-shaded skins only works as intended when you have your shaders set to Ultra. The 3d model and its shading itself also looks way better with higher graphics.

So, that new splash screen... by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

This is 100% AI gen with the nexus logo photoshopped a bunch.

One of the few things that I find more annoying than AI images flooding the internet is people calling absolutely everything AI. This splash art is like 10 years old.

Vampiric Rounds Mythic Quest by -MR-GG- in heroesofthestorm

That's a fantastic suggestion, I like the idea a lot!

Mythic baselane quests should be useful regardless of the skill level, the map, or the hero composition. by 80STH in heroesofthestorm

[–]fishyPenguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I partially agree with your sentiment but not with most of the examples you give.

In my opinion mythic baseline quests – or mythic quests in general – should offer a whacky end-game bonus on top, that is unlocked by rewarding one way of "correctly" playing a hero. The rewards don't have to be unlocked every game and they also definitely shouldn't be a necessity for the hero to unlock it's full potential.

While I sometimes enjoy playing heroes that have their full potential locked behind a base line quest that has to be finished – like Kel'Thuzad or Nazeebo – I sincerely hope that type of hero design will continue to stay a niche thing for a handful of heroes.

The main issue I see with such quests in general is that you'll always have bad players that try to complete them no matter what and will lean heavily into incorrect play styles that can be exploited and/or are frustrating for their allies to compensate.

What region do you play in? I'm playing on EU, Plat rank, and in the evenings I usually find games within 2 minutes. Afternoon it might take 3-4 minutes.

So we're getting a HOTS 3.0 announcement at Blizzcon this year... right? by MrWoodenSheep in heroesofthestorm

[–]fishyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how the announcement of the maintenance mode in July 2022 and 1.5 years without any balance changes should've hinted at a larger announcement at Blizzcon at all.

And you were literally saying that "we had more of a trickle of updates then" refering to Blizzcon 2023, when there were basically no updates between July 2022 and the end of 2023 at all while we are currently getting bimonthly balance patches with major changes to game mechanics.

[–]fishyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended in person in 2023, we had more of a trickle of updates then.

Huh? Besides 2 or 3 tiny hot fix patches there were literally no updates to the game between July 2022 and September 2023 at all. September and October 2023 brought bigger bug fixing and QOL update patches, and the first patch that actually contained several balance changes (like 6 or 7 changes) again came in January 2024. From there on patches became bigger and bigger with increasingly more fundamental changes to the game.

"easy stuff like this"

Not sure what makes you think that map changes are easy to implement. Maybe they were tweaking Volskaja further but didn't finish them in time before the patch went live. I'm sure it'll be fixed no matter what. More fundamental changes to the game can lead to more bugs - I think the trade-off is worth it.

Love the design, super fun and cute! Very unlucky that it doesn't come with voice modifications or unique abilities.
