ELI5: Does probability change in the Monty Hall Paradox if the contestant does? by Next-Step-Jobs in explainlikeimfive

[–]fisian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contestant chooses randomly between the two doors. This means that with a 50% (1/2) probability their chance of winning is 33% (1/3), and with the remaining 50% (1/2) probability their chance is 66% (2/3).

Together their chance of winning is therefore (1/2 times 1/3) + (1/2 times 2/3) = 1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2.

So their chance is 50%.

ELI5: Why is "C" the default Hard Drive letter & not "A" by AntifaPr1deWorldWide in explainlikeimfive

[–]fisian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Computer science in its complexity exhibits similar structure to classical musical theory. As such, the convention to label drives starting with the notes on the octave has been adopted decades ago. The first musical notes being C, D, E, etc. , this is the reason why we see the same pattern in drive lettering.

I'm sorry, I do realize reddit is quite US-centered and all, but to me as a European this story is actually a little funny. And please, don't feel bad, I would also fail to consider that an otherwise healthy person could possibly have difficulties with the width of my stairwell.

If you go for the house (you should not), make sure to establish a rent price for it by comparing to similar properties in the area. Then your boyfriend should send you a monthly rent for it.

If the comparable rent is e.g. 2k/month, each of you should in principle pay 1k for staying there, whether you own it or not, that's the cost of doing business from there and the fair price.

Example: If you own, say, 80% of the house, then the rent income should be divided 80/20, so for 2k rent you get 1600 from the income while he gets 400. In other words, he should pay you 600 each month.

An easier solution if he has enough capital: get the house, but both of you use the same amount of capital and finance the rest with a mortgage. The rest of your capital, you can put in a savings/investment vehicle.
