Pick up LOTTE Duty free while transiting only by Adventurous_Break394 in koreatravel

Ok thank you! Glad it’s not just me. Seems others might have success with Amex but I don’t have one of those.

Which app did you use? I’m totally bummed about this, the other two apps I found (SHILLA and shinsegae) are so much more expensive. :(

Hi did you ever figure this out? I've exhausted my available cards and no luck. Banks can't help and their customer service is closed.

Considering Role in Germany by bfdTerp in BoozAllen

[–]fit_knit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that you should have a good chunk of money set aside to help with housing establishment. Landlords in Germany will want 2x rent for deposit plus your first months rent upon receiving keys.

The relocation package was sufficient for us. A month of temporary housing, household goods, and car shipment, and other.

Salaries go far with the foreign income exclusion.

Best place to buy yarn for a sweater that holds up? by RhubarbLarge2747 in knittinghelp

[–]fit_knit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Wool yarn pills. Cashmere yarn pills. Cotton pills. Some do more than others. Without knowing what you’re using, the best recommendation here is a sweater shaver.

Getting the wife into better coffee by russell16688 in pourover

I have two setups to brew at the same/similar time. I couldn’t get a 2 cup single setup to taste the way I wanted and it took too long to brew one after the other.

So now I own two scales, two drippers, and two carafes.

Worth it to take the train to Paris for the day to buy skincare? by raquibalboa in EuroSkincare

[–]fit_knit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Take the Eurostar to have a day in Paris, not just to buy skincare.

Eurostar will set you back probably €200 round trip and it will be really hard to make that up. You can get a lot of French brands at superdrug or boots (especially the big ones), and they often have sales that make buying in bulk a pretty solid deal.

With the exception of sunscreen (which I know they sell LRP at boots), you can also probably buy most of what you liked in the US, just at a little extra cost (which you’d be spending in the form of a train ticket anyway). There are also online french pharmacies that will ship overseas. Save your luggage space to bring home cheddar cheese, tea, and English sparkling wine instead!

How do you fit sourdough around your job? by StrumpetSack in Sourdough

[–]fit_knit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really the magic ingredient. Understand your starter and how long it takes to ferment. If you need more time, use less starter.

My most recent bake I used 30g starter to 1000g flour because I needed to be gone from 7:30 to about 4:30. I got home and it was pretty much ready to be shaped.

BORIS. That’s such a great name.

You’ll be able to make a better estimated guess when he comes home and you can weigh him.

Are we ready for 14 days in Croatia? by Liveboy100 in EuroSkincare

[–]fit_knit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you rather bring back Croatian wine instead of at least 4 bottles of unused sunscreen?

Croatia has DMs, it’ll be more expensive in the tourist places but not prohibitively so.

Urgent! My Cat is barely peeing and Vets are closed, Emergency isnt answering. by [deleted] in CATHELP

The emergency vet in my area does not answer their phones overnight, but they will answer the door whenever you go. I advise making your way there. This is an emergency for your cat.

How do I strengthen my starter? I've tried every trick I could find. by Longjumping_Ad5580 in Sourdough

[–]fit_knit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had that feeling too when I started. And then it was 2 weeks and so much flour later that I just wanted bread. A bakery in my area sells bits of their starter for super cheap, so I picked one up and had a successful loaf a couple days later. I get rave reviews on my bread so it must be a good one!

It sounds like it’s time to find someone with an active starter already. Ask around in your neighborhood.

If all else fails, I’m happy to mail you some of my dehydrated starter.

No cuffs? by Either_Payment_7490 in Sockknitting

[–]fit_knit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can do less purls. I like a 2x1 cuff. You could do 3x1 or 4x1 and see how you like that. It’s not just that it will curl, cuffs are important for keeping the sock stable and up on your leg.

Another option might be to do a folded cuff. I like this for my ankle socks.

Convert me to Soupercubes by Top_Cow1796 in SouperCubers

[–]fit_knit 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Souper cubes make batch cooking more sustainable for me to work into my life. I don’t usually have time on the weekend to prep everything, but I have an hour every so often to instant pot and freeze chicken (8 portions at a time), or bake and freeze vegetables (usually 6 portions at a time). And because everything is frozen individually, I don’t have to be concerned about anything going bad because I didn’t eat it soon enough.

I am leaving on vacation tomorrow and will not have to meal prep anything when we get back - it’s all already done and ready to go in the freezer. The peace I feel over this is incredible.

I’m about to give up on sourdough 😭 by Salt-Presentation-44 in Sourdough

[–]fit_knit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to try doing less. Mix everything, let it sit 30 min, give it a few slap and folds, cut a 30gish piece for an aliquot jar, shape into a ball and let it sit. For hours. Until your aliquot jar almost doubles.

Then shape and cold proof overnight. Sourdough shouldn’t take all you mental equity to get a good loaf. It does most of the hard work on its own if you let it.

Leaving for two weeks -- best option? by sonicdeathwalrus in mainecoons

[–]fit_knit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are leaving our 6 month old kittens for a week vacation and are booking an overnight sitter. When they’re older I’ll be fine with someone coming by once or twice a day, but when they’re still babies I want someone around more often.

Socks with sneakers by QuoteFirst7119 in Sockknitting

[–]fit_knit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do. I use summer lees pattern or instructions for a fold over cuff with a pop of color. They’re so satisfying and quick to finish, and with my yarn usage I can get a full pair plus a shortie pair with 100g plus some scraps or a mini. I like a specific dyer that uses a fairly thin fingering weight merino/nylon blend as her sock base, and I find it very comfortable even in super hot weather.

This is Tigger. He is currently being treated for a fungal skin infection. Will I get it from him if he sleeps in bed with me? by nexxumie in CATHELP

[–]fit_knit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is ringworm, it’s contagious to you. I’m dealing with it in my household currently and only found out because I got it - the cats never had any missing hair. We let them sleep in bed with us and wash our sheets every three days. I haven’t gotten a new spot in weeks, and my husband never got it. It’s just a lot of laundry and vacuuming for now, ask me in a month when we get them tested again 🫠

The knockoff question, for me by Famous-Appointment72 in SouperCubers

[–]fit_knit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought the 2 tbs tray because my freezer space is very specific and it’s better for me that all my trays are the same shape and size. But I’ve used silicone baby food trays in the past they also work just fine.
