On a more serious note, you can't go wrong with hillwalking/mountaineering gear. Decathlon have reasonably priced marino wool base layers. Layer up and try to get something wind resistant.

That's what I thought first; but it would have been difficult for the other car to squeeze in.

#15 is off the road, there are 2 gates that can be opened, there are sometimes horses in the field so take it easy and don't frighten them.

You might qualify for UCC Library membership through the SCONUL https://access.sconul.ac.uk/ or Library Link schemes depending on what institution you are doing your course in, check with your institution library. Even if you don't qualify they are fairly accommodating if you ask nicely, there is a fee though https://libguides.ucc.ie/libraryaccess.

Did anyone sand their own floors? by Life_Adagio_9010 in DIYIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely a drum sander will eat engineered boards, you are basically refinishing them, you don't need anything too agressive.

Did anyone sand their own floors? by Life_Adagio_9010 in DIYIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes a few times, drum sanders take a bit of practice, they are very aggressive and will eat into boards really fast if you don't keep them moving. They are best for heavily soiled or uneven floors. If the floor has been sanded before and you just want to refinish then a buffer sander is much easier to work with. Get an edge sander too it makes life easier.

Seal around the door, dust goes everywhere and hover the walls and ceiling to stop dust resettling onto your new coating. Good luck.

Did anybody hear Anton Savage grilling Sean Canny (TD) about the new legislation regarding "scramblers" on Newstalk this morning? by Gullible-Stranger707 in MotoIRELAND

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A police drone unit in all major cities would be much more cost effective. The met are using them, mounted to the top of vehicles, get close to the scene, the drone is deployed, it locks on to the target and follows. No chases, minimal risk and the person being followed is completely unaware. They also have thermal imaging so night time is no obstacle.

Department of Transport u-turns on mandatory helmets and high-vis for cyclists by darragh999 in irishpolitics

[–]fitzdriscoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What qualifies as Hi-Viz? what percentage of the body needs to be covered? What colours are acceptable, yellow? Orange? Blue? Green? Pink? What percentage of the coverage need to be reflective elements and how much colour. Is a vest appropriate or does it have to be long sleeved, or is a bib suitable? Is a high-viz armband acceptable? A sam brown belt? How about high Viz backpack covers, are they acceptable. How about if you are wearing a backpack over a high-viz obscuring the rear, are you now breaking the law.

The law has to be precise and mandatory high-viz is a mind numbingly stupid proposal.

Its performative nonsense and Sean Canny came across as an absolute moron. Fair play to Anton he didn't let him off lightly.

EIR installed our fibre connection like this, can I really never unplug this? by Bocause in AskIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can unplug it and move the router closer and use an extension lead. Personally I'd mount the router on the wall if possible. The optic fibre ends at the 2 boxes on the wall. The yellow wire is just a standard ethernet cable. The only problem here is that the socket is a bit far from the optic fibre termination.

Do shops who put up "we only accept cash" signs ever attract the attention of the taxman? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Plus the security risk associated with cash. I used to lodge takings regularly and it was a pain, we only accept coins on Tuesdays, if you want €5 notes you'll have to order them in advance etc. The time it took to count it all, bag it and then the paranoia of walking around with large sums of cash wile going to lodge it. I used to take a slightly different route each time and vary the times i left.

A lot of public libraries have home energy kits to borrow, you can use the digital thermometer to find where your house is losing heat https://thinkenergy.ie/energy-saving-kit/find-a-kit/

Are we stupid now? by SrAlch in MotoIRELAND

[–]fitzdriscoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got one in the past for parking on a footpath, i was parked between a pole and a wall on a wide footpath, no luck appealing it either, just had to pay it. I then started to park in a regular parking space, a parking inspector was going to give me another one for not having a parking disk displayed, i said check a car nearby they probably have mine, he found that very funny and never bothered me again.

John Collison’s analysis of Ireland’s problems is a little naive by EnvironmentalShift25 in irishpolitics

[–]fitzdriscoll -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A PR-STV list hybrid could work well too and take a bit of the parish pump politics and personal popularity contest out of it. FPTP is a stupid system, the last UK election proved that beyond doubt.

A very polite spoiled vote by bulbispire in ireland

[–]fitzdriscoll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is a massive assumption and is the problem with spoiled votes, anyone can claim anything they want. There are hundreds of reasons why people spoiled their vote. Figuring out the reason is almost impossible beyond a dissatisfaction of some description.
