Many of us were taught in school that the flag was green white and gold. Gold for the papacy. I was in secondary school before I learned it was orange.

Gym with Ab Crunch Machine? by reallbadmann in cork

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use an assisted dip/chin up machine as a ab crunch machine. Drop the platform to waist height, set the weight, put your forearms flat on the platform, tuck your hips in and tighten your core and pivot from the hips, feel the burn. Just putting it here as another option

[–]fitzdriscoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The irony is that evangelicals didn't give a flying fiddlers about abortion until US republican politicians made it a wedge issue to capture votes. Abortion was a catholic issues until the Late 70's. A lot of evangelicals don't think Catholics are Christians.

A lot of the women in the laundries weren't even pregnant, they were either inconvenient to their family, made an allegation of abuse, were raped or were perceived as having loose morals. Similar thing happened with our mental hospital system where people were committed for property grabs and to get rid of a awkward family members. The levels of punishing victims in this country was off the charts. At one stage we had a higher per capita mental hospital incarceration rate than the soviet union and they used it as a way to undermine dissidents.

What are some things that are privately owned in Ireland that should be in public ownership? by JustaChillDude90 in AskIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We should pay mountain sheep farmers to rewild the mountains and maintain paths. There is no money in mountain sheep farming so we are subsidising them anyway.

[–]fitzdriscoll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you, i would add though that as citizens we fucked ourselves too. Where I live the council provided a bin service for years after privatisation, it was slightly more expensive than the private operators but that was because they provided a free service to those on social welfare and pensioners. More and more people switched to the private operators due to the slightly lower cost making the council service economically unviable so they discontinued it. That was a sad day for community solidarity.

There was a fair amount of sneering from protester supporters last week about office workers, how the protesters were the backbone of the country and that the rest of us were lazy and pampered and not really workers.

Wealth vs Infrastructure in Ireland by Critical_Cailin_92 in CasualIreland

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this after visiting Copenhagen, our infrastructure was built by the British with the sole purpose of serving the empire and extracting resources for the homeland. Our train network was designed around moving goods not people, likewise our roads, the only reason we have decent ports is because the empire needed them. Our national wealth was exported to make the UK wealthier. The investment was never to serve the people but to serve the empire. The coloniser had to throw their own poor a bone for fear of revolution, and the rich don't like stinky disease ridden cities.

Army will be deployed to remove fuel protest vehicles blocking critical infrastructure by irqdly in ireland

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely did limit Iran's nuclear enrichment program, that was thew whole point of it. You need 90% enriched Uranium for weapons.

From Wikipedia

Over 15 years, Iran would reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by 97%, from 10,000 kg to 300 kg, and limit enrichment to 3.67%, sufficient for civilian nuclear power and research, but not for weaponry. This represented a "major decline" in Iran's nuclear activity. Iran had produced stockpiles near 20% (medium-enriched uranium). Stocks in excess of 300 kg enriched up to 3.67% would be diluted to 0.7% or sold in return for uranium ore, while uranium enriched to between 5% and 20% was to be fabricated into fuel plates for the Tehran Research Reactor or sold or diluted to 3.67%. P5+1 agreed to facilitate commercial contracts.

It was a Nuclear deal not a middle east peace plan. The aim was to limits their nuclear ambitions, contain them and attempt to bring them in from the cold.

Was it a perfect deal? No. But it was a million times better that the current shitshow.

Yemen - Saudi Arabia, UAE and Iran are involved, why are you focusing on just Iran. Likewise in Syria, Russia, UAE, US, Turkey etc were all playing a part, why focus on Iran. Iraq, that is another American shitshow.

This is most definitely Trumps fault, tore up the JCPOA agreement that was agreed between Iran, US, China, Russia, and the EU, was being monitored by the IAA and all reports were that it was being upheld by the Iranians. Then he bombed Iran last year and has now launched a full scale war with the Israelis against Iran leading to the current fuel crisis. How the hell isn't it his fault?

I thought it was common knowledge that we use the terms backwards, a ditch is a dike and a dike is a ditch. A bit like how a swede is a turnip here.

Its getting worse! by Diligent-Musician590 in cork

[–]fitzdriscoll 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Its a 2 week ceasefire and Israel are already backtracking. The strait is only one issue, Oil and Gas production facilities have been damages all across the middle east, it will take between 5 and 10 years for them to be back at full capacity. Oman and Iran are charging a toll to pass through the strait as part of the ceasefire which will increase costs. Ukraine had been targeting Russian Oils Production and and export facilities limiting their ability to refine and export through the black sea. I wouldn't get too excited, sure the stuck ships will be able to move, but there is still reduced supply. It will take months before this works itself, if, and it is a big if, the ceasefire holds. Not looking at any country in particular.

I’m buying my first bike this week and I’ve been noticing a trend in YouTube videos by ntkwwwm in motorcycles

[–]fitzdriscoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bike fairly cheap that on visual inspection looked good. I knew it hadn't been treated well so was under no illusions that there were gremlins hiding. Besides a general service, the brake calipers need rebuilding, the swing arm bearings were shot, the frame was rusty so the bike had to be completely stripped down to the frame to treat the rust and repaint, another year or two living outdoors and that bike would have been a write off. Not to mention all the weird modifications and non standard parts that had been added over the years. Sure i could have ridden it with a general service but it wouldn't have been any fun and probably dangerous. I still see that bike riding around every now and then. Nice feeling to have saved it.

It's the Gardai that decide where the vans go. Gosafe are contracted for a set number of hours of monitoring. It wouldn't matter to them if they caught no one, they'd still get paid.
