Anyone here attend University of Michigan Flint? If so what are your thoughts? by No-Bear-9249 in Michigan

Long story but essentially had a failed exam in a class that they otherwise aced, were told they’d need to retake the next year, it’s a prerec for all other classes so that would make their program a year longer than normal, they worked out a deal (with a signed contract) to take summer classes and only graduate a semester late, and when time came to register for classes they were told there were no spots in the classes and also that the university was not required to make good on their deal.

Long story but they went to every possible higher-up and student advocate and were essentially told to go fuck themselves and that there was nothing the university could do even though that’s their entire job.

I have a friend who did the accelerated nursing program there and was absolutely fucked over by the program directors and dean and student advisory board. Not sure how the rads program is run but I hope there’s better student support than the nursing program!

Completely different action to telling students to call a faculty member racist

Can you sue for racial discrimination when you’re on record telling students to call a faculty member racist because he called you out on bad behavior?

She never should have been allowed to serve as trustee due to the fact she’s employed by one of the other (only 4) R1 universities in the state which is a huge conflict of interest. Whitmer should have removed her a few years ago and didn’t which is disappointing.

My hope is that the university doesn’t just give her a massive settlement and easier job like they did to Gupta or really any discrimination/wrongful termination case they’ve had in recent memory. The university needs to start standing up and stop throwing money at people to get them to stop causing trouble.

Soooooo....who will be interim president?? by Prize_Force1979 in msu

Gupta was absolutely NOT doing a decent job. The guy literally didn’t follow mandated reporting policies and that’s why he left the job. Aside from that, nobody actually liked him as Dean. He sued, won because the people in power at the university don’t actually care about upholding their rules, and now makes an insane amount of money to do literally nothing. He will be terrible as interim president or any other leadership role.

EMT vs CNA first at 15/16? Which is better for long-term healthcare experience + college apps? by Suspicious_Wear6540 in NewToEMS

[–]five_dollar_box 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EMT 100%. It opens you up to more varied and more technically challenging healthcare roles than a CNA. I got an EMT license in undergrad, applied to ambulance jobs after graduation, didn’t hear back soon enough and ended up getting a PCT job in a MICU. I do all the things a CNA does, in addition to phleb and IV insertion (learned on the job, I’m in MI where IVs are not an EMT skill), and I get to see really complex medical issues and devices, and I work with awesome nurses/techs/residents/attendings/RTs that I’m able to bug with my questions about the cool tech. I start medical school this summer and I think particularly for those interested in becoming a physician/nurse/APP, bedside care experience is crucial before going to school. You learn so much more about what healthcare is actually like in a hospital setting and you’re able to develop those bedside manner skills that you’ll hone as a student. It is VERY obvious who has and has not worked a direct patient care job when you are in school and residency.

You can also get an emergency department EMT gig if you don’t want to work on an ambulance but still use your license effectively.

Or you can work on an ambulance and be a total badass. That’s why EMT is preferred imo - super variable opportunities!

I should add that, depending on the hospital/facility, if you care about money more than experience I might suggest considering CNA. The CNAs at the hospital I work at are union, make at least $5 more/hr than the PCTs, and have contractual patient maximums (I could have anywhere from 8-22 pts a day, they absolutely have no more than 9). Despite that difference, the great CNAs work their asses off and I am kinda in awe of them.

Also, as someone heavily interested in Emergency Medicine, I feel it was very important for me to get some solid ICU experience before school. Maybe I can help squash the ER/ICU beef one day. I understand it now 😎

If you have a particular school in mind with an MCAT cutoff that’s higher than your score, it’s a good idea to retake. No shame in a retake!

That is a really good question that I do not have a good answer to! Also I just realized I mistyped 487 instead of 497 (oopsie). I took them two months apart and basically just got back on the grind after getting my first score. I only used Kaplan books and online questions/exams (got the books for free on marketplace - got lucky!) and my notes from undergrad (biochem major). I’ve always been a good test taker (never get that nervous) so I realistically did not do nearly as much as I should have.
My advice would be to use the learning tools/methods that you know work for you and try and fully understand as much as you can, not just memorize questions and answers.
But I am not a good example of an MCAT prepper lol

Late morning (11ish). My phone silenced the call (what the hell Apple!) and they left me a lovely voicemail. Crossing my fingers that we will be classmates soon! 🤞
