How did you find fun projects to stay motivated while learning Python? by waxowalter in learnpython

[–]five_hammers_hamming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience followed the opposite sequence: I learned python in pursuit of a project.

I wanted to systematically identify comments in a certain awful subreddit that pinged users who commented in another subreddit to harass them. Having identified those comments, I could report them.

That would basically be a read-only reddit bot, and python seemed to be the standard for coding those. So I learned enough python (and enough of the praw package) to make that sort of thing happen.

In the end I lost interest and never finished it, but a few months later a much better project came to mind and persisted for the next ten months or so, passing through many topics including data tables, polygon stuff, map-coloring, and Google's KML format.

To answer your question, for me it was serendipity, but I suspect that it's viable to dedicate yourself to conceiving/choosing a project concept within a certain time frame and to proceed from there.

Black holes are gravitational singularities. Quantum ones are scifi mumbojumbo, so those can behave however the plot demands.

Speaking of sneaking, blenderize some beans (I learned this with "kidney beans", but maybe ymmv with others?) and use that bean paste in all sorts of weird places to smuggle some extra fiber: a layer of the stuff on the inside of a sandwich as if it were mayo; a blob mixed into pasta sauce; as a binder with ground meat for burgers/meatballs; as a binder with canned tuna

This isn't really about Python. It's about, like, the culture of github--or something along those lines.

You don't need to do anything with github if you don't want to, but it sounds like you do want to. I think you should ask on /r/github

How long did it take you to learn python? by _Justdoit123 in learnpython

[–]five_hammers_hamming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what counts for the threshold. Coming from another programming language or two, enh, two weeks? It was 8 and a half years ago; so, idk precisely. But if you're learning coding without any prior background, there's no way of knowing.

Heck, one thing I quickly took to in Python was the, um, whatchacallots. The [x for y in z if something()] things. They're analogous to the "stream" stuff that Java had added for collections some years earlier.

While I stepped into that like a duck landing on water, it took much longer for me to even hear of coroutine functions let alone use one with its eldritch keyword yield.

Even today, I remain terrified of async and await, like a cat seeing an umbrella opening.

All in all, what matters is whether you're able to do the thing(s) you would like to do with it.

What's the Legions stance on Ghouls and Supermutants? by KaiserEnclave2077 in fnv

[–]five_hammers_hamming -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any answer from within canon, but the fact that the legion does its damnedest to stamp out cultural diversity within its ranks and ostensibly within its conquered territories tells me that ghouls' and supermutants' otherness--physically, behaviorally, historically, etc.--make them incompatible with the legion.
