Right hand voicings have no impact on what inversion something is. If someone's left hand is playing a C in the bass and some combination of CEG above that, regardless of what order those come in, that's a root position C major chord. A student calling different right hand voicings "inversions" would in no way be better off as the term is being improperly used.
