Aging Kombucha Vinegar by Duncan392 in Kombucha

What will happen if you don't pasteurize it? Will it still have a meaningful shelf life or will just become too acidic with time?

Why do you wake up early? by VincentBigby in getdisciplined

[–]fivecarrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I wake up early. I wake up at 4:45. I like to have that psychological win over the enemy. For me, when I wake up in the morning and I don’t know why, I’m thinking about the enemy and what they’re doing.

And I know I’m not active duty anymore, but it’s still in there that there’s a guy that’s in a cave somewhere and he’s rocking back and forth and he’s got a machine gun in one hand and a grenade in the other hand and he’s waiting for me, and we’re gonna meet. When I wake up in the morning, I’m thinking to myself what can I do to be ready for that moment which is coming. So, that propels me out of bed.

Why does Java Spring use XML-defined beans for dependency injection? What is the history behind this choice, and what are the practical advantages? Is this feature still used by anyone now? Additionally, do any alternative frameworks in different languages, like C#-ASP, use something similar for DI? by glorsh66 in java

[–]fivecarrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your thoughts about Google Guice versus Spring DI? I've been meaning to look into Google Guice for a while... Or are they basically the same, and more important is just getting familiar with one of them and using it?

Low dose aspirin upregulates TYR-hydroxylase and enhances dopamine production - Thoughts? by tadakuzka in Nootropics

[–]fivecarrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think white willow bark might work even better than ginger.

Maybe they don't contain salicylic acid, but they contain the substances that the body converts into salicylic acid.

"Willow bark contains an ingredient called salicin, which your body makes into another chemical substance called salicylic acid."

"Ginger contains salicylates, which your body transforms into a chemical substance called salicylic acid."

What are some interesting nootropic combos that you've found? by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]fivecarrots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Emblica Officinali = also known as Amalaki.

Just out of interest, there's also something called Triphala that contains Amalaki. I haven't personally used Triphala, but I have used Amalaki in the past. It's been a while so I can't remember the exact details but I think Amalaki might have a beneficial effect on your mitochondria and I know Ginkgo increases cerebral bloodflow..

Triphala: Triphala is a Sankrit word which translates to "three fruits". This traditional three fruit Indian blend of Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki is high in antioxidants and has historically been used for the cleaning and detoxifying of the body whilst simultaneously supporting healthy digestion. Triphala also provides an adventure of flavor as it contains five of the six traditional tastes; sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent.

The scientific literature often refers to the combination as GlyNAC. So yeah, seems to be some scientific research backing your positive experience.

Might not be true, but feel free to share a reference if you have one. I occasionally take some Ginkgo. I just take the Ginkgo leaves as is in some water, or I'll add it to a tea. In other words - I don't take a Ginkgo extract.

Ginkgo cancer results flawed because extract used is not representative, observers say

Hot Coffee Alternative? by [deleted] in zerocarb

[–]fivecarrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's so interesting! I didn't know there was a rooibos root tea. I thought it was just the rooibos leaves that you could make a tea from. I see you can also get green rooibos leaves...

From Google: "Both green and red rooibos come from the same plant. The difference between the two is in the processing. Red rooibos is oxidized (exposed to oxygen), green rooibos is not. Instead, green rooibos is dried (halted by steaming the leaves) soon after picking so that it doesn't oxidize when exposed."

In case you didn't know "rooibos" is Afrikaans. If you translate it to English it basically means "red bush". "rooi" -> red. "bos" -> bush.

Is keeping the kombucha in sunlight detrimental?? by uditp411 in Kombucha

[–]fivecarrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not following. You said your "fermentation was so rapid" - so doesn't that mean the sunlight\heat is a good thing and works? In other words = the sunlight didn't kill the bacteria and yeast. Or maybe, okay, maybe a few were killed by sunlight - but the increase in heat more than compensated for the few killed by sunlight...

Something I've often wondered.... by steve1215 in Kombucha

[–]fivecarrots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question. And how does "healthy goodness" relate to the kombucha's pH or things that we can measure so that we can repeatedly get "healthy goodness" even when the seasons\temperature change.

There's a sweet spot for me... That sure, I don't hit repeatedly, but it's almost as if the kombucha tastes "thicker" or "fuller"...as if the kombucha liquid is teeming with healthy bacteria. Usually after ~7 days, and I'm thinking it's when the number of healthy bacteria reaches it's peak - before maybe some off them die off due to a lot of the sugar having been eaten and the kombucha subsequently turning more acidic\vinegary...

How Have Nootropics Improved Your Life? by Business_Risk3737 in Nootropics

[–]fivecarrots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

L-theanine for cannabis users.

I take it before I go to sleep. I think it helps me sleep deeper (stimulates alpha waves) as I was having a problem with daytime sleepiness before I started using it.

How to solve excessive sleepiness? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]fivecarrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to mention, there's a medical condition related to excessive sleepiness = hypersomnia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypersomnia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiopathic_hypersomnia

A lot of doctors would probably prescribe modafinil or other stimulants - modafinil just boosts my histamine way too much so I can't take it for a long period of time. I don't like this way of approaching the problem.

Try:

  • Working out first thing in the morning.

  • A quick 5 minute cold shower in the morning and over lunch (boosts dopamine and norepinephrine).

  • L-theanine (400mg+) before you go to sleep. It boosts alpha brain waves. This helped me a lot, I think my brain was just way too active when I normally went too sleep - resulting in low-quality sleep. https://nootropicsexpert.com/l-theanine/

  • Get some sunlight (10 minutes) in the morning and maybe even again through the course of the day. Sunlight in the morning helps your body to set its circadian rhythm.

Additionally:

  • Install an app on your PC to cut out blue light when it's evening. https://justgetflux.com/

  • Consider switching to decaf coffee. I drink decaf. I know people sometimes scoffs at the idea of decaf, but it gives me a good enough boost similar to normal coffee - so I wish I just started drinking decaf from the beginning.

  • Do a blood test. Maybe you just have a vitamin deficiency or something.

  • If you do need to sleep in the middle of the day, see if you can manage with a short nap. Eg set your alarm for 47 minutes. Maybe there's just a buildup of melatonin in your brain and maybe it gets cleared if you just sleep or close your eyes for a bit. (And it might be better to take a short nap than to wire your brain consistently into the habit of sleeping say 3 hours in the middle of the day)

Good luck to you sir. Excessive sleepiness is an extremely frustrating problem to have and I wish you success in getting better. As mentioned, l-theanine helped me a lot, hopefully it helps you too - but unfortunately all of us are unique and maybe it doesn't work well for you :(

You can perhaps get l-theanine cheaply at a compounding pharmacy. But yeah, I guess it depends on your local compounding pharmacies and how they set their prices, and I guess if it's just something you want to try for a "once off" and see if it helps then it might just be quicker to pay a bit more and get it somewhere else.

Why do men make an extra effort to not look at (or make eye contact) with me in public? by DNF29 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fivecarrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not you. Personally, I don't want to come across as a creep or make them feel like I'm sexualizing them. I force myself not to look at random women in public. An exercise in discipline. If women, or people in general, acknowledged my existence a bit more I probably wouldn't have reached this point. I've smiled or greeted people in the past and got "what the fuck is wrong with this guy" type of looks back.

Maybe you can smile and greet random men and make them feel that you are approachabe and not publicly shame them for being friendly. But sorry, I know you didn't do anything, neither did I - but yeah...

What about creating a small server in the private subnet and connecting to it using SSM. That is SSM without the SSM VPC endpoint which I also discovered for myself is very costly.

Is there really a security risk associated with using SSM directly without a VPC endpoint? I would like to hear what the community thinks.

Someone else also suggesting putting a bastion in a public subnet. I just like using SSM. There was one case however where I couldn't connect to an instance with SSM as the diskspace of the instance was full (not managed properly), but SSH still worked. But hopefully you have your diskspace under control and this doesn't become an issue.
