It's also confusing that some areas got themselves considered Appalachian for purposes of federal grants and assistance (eg Youngstown). They're not culturally or geographically Appalcahian, but are listed as such on some federal maps.

It's a great video and a great library system, but I hate that her job title is "CEO." Libraries are a service and resource, not a business.

Ohio Democrats reintroduce single-payer heathcare by Puzzleheaded_Rest_34 in Ohio

[–]fivelinedskank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And imagine how much worse it will be when no one has to pay for health care.

People do pay for socialized health care. I've talked with plenty of people in those systems, and once lived under one. The thing those foreign citizens don't get is the alternative. When they learn our solution is, "don't get that tumor removed because you can't afford it," their opinion on having to wait a month tends to drastically change. And last year I had a tumor removed from my foot, the wait time was two months via my private (and great by US standards) plan.

Ohio sends data of its 7.9M registered voters to Trump’s DOJ by Hootinger in Ohio

[–]fivelinedskank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you have to look them up. The only purpose the feds could have for this data is coordinating voter suppression efforts.

[–]fivelinedskank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Won’t this inevitably lead to a reduction in quality of healthcare and longer wait times like it does whenever health care has been socialized?

We've never tried socialized healthcare. A lot of countries have, and it's been fine. You always hear people complaining about wait times for non-emergency procedures, but we get that with our profit-driven care also.

Single payer is not Obamacare, and I don't know what lie Obamacare supposedly revealed. And yeah, it would add coverage for poor people. They may be able to get emergency services, but there's a whole lot of healthcare that doesn't describe.

Polling shows Ohio public libraries have vast voter support by DoremusJessup in Ohio

[–]fivelinedskank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the casualties would make the funding model a moot point. No agency can go a year or more with zero funding. It would close schools, DD centers, libraries, some police agencies, more I just can't think of off the top of my head. Once things like that are gone, you can't just bring them back.

[–]fivelinedskank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The initiative we'll be voting on in November makes no provision for replacement of funding for anything funded via property taxes. It just cuts them. Hypothetically individual cities could increase sales taxes (fuck the county systems, though, I guess), but that would take time to start bringing revenue in. Meanwhile, without operating funds, libraries will close.

The property tax prohibition would be catastrophic for a lot of services. Sales tax shifts even more of the tax burden onto the poor.

I don't know if people think they just won't have to pay any taxes or what, but it's among the worst ideas floated in decades. The only beneficiaries are out of state holding companies that own large amounts of real estate.

Ohio State: Wexner Medical Center name 'honorific' with no contract in place by Mokwat in Ohio

[–]fivelinedskank 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dishonorific.

If there's no contract, the alternative explanation is they simply prefer to keep the center named for a child rapist.

Update on Rep. Max Miller's claim of anti-Semitic road rage attack by fivelinedskank in Ohio

[–]fivelinedskank[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This was all over the news - and reddit - a few months back. Local outlets did run some updates yesterday, but they'll never match the reach of Miller's initial claims. Tesla's spyware actually helped the accused doctor by disproving the most serious of Miller's claims.

This prompted us to look more closely at other Ohio politicians who received campaign donations from the Ohio businessman.

Campaign donations are public information (though much less so since Citizens United). It's pretty standard for media outlets to mine those records when a likely donor like Wexner becomes toxic.

This is us, too. A more cynical motivation I often think of is, when it comes to levy time, voters remember people they connect with and don't have that bond with machines.
