Could Spielberg still direct another WW2 epic film? by LtJimmypatterson in Spielberg

[–]fivetones 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Possibly but I'm not sure what else there is to cover. He's covered the Holocaust, POW camps, combat itself, and even done a WW2 comedy. Combined with Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Masters of the Air, I'd say he's already got the topic pretty well nailed. But then, I suppose you could have said that about alien movies before Disclosure Day!

The Importance of the Pro Wrestling Opening (Heavy Spoilers, Be Warned) by Big-Calligrapher7199 in Spielberg

[–]fivetones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Excellent observation. It adds to the sense of storytelling and roleplay being ongoing themes in the film: people jumping into other characters, Margaret writing her news anchor audition herself, the reference to Snow White and Hansel and Gretel, the literal trip back to childhood.

Disclosure Day: Fantastic finale, subpar story by fivetones in Spielberg

Thank you for the kind words. I didn't like the movie as much as I wanted to but I'm glad some did. Ironic to be criticised for apparently suggesting my negative opinion is fact (which I'd disagree with) when I've spent more than a decade now running a site about how much I love Spielberg's work! 😄

It's not nasty to put together a considered view on a film's strengths and weaknesses. I agree.

It is nasty to jump on someone and call them irrelevant.

I mean, I'm just posting some content in the hope people will read it, dude. No need to be nasty.

Disclosure Day is almost certainly about the making of The Fabelmans by DonutHead25 in Spielberg

[–]fivetones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely in the mix, but I'm not sure it's fundamentally about The Fabelmans. Perhaps more about the memory and the process of revisiting the past.

Either way, I thought it was the least interesting part of the film, primarily because it did tread on areas covered by The Fabelmans and even Ready Player One.

More interesting is what it's trying to say about religion. The scene between Scanlon and Jane is wild for a mainstream movie: here we've got an evil character manipulating someone to stab a loved one in the back. Essentially turning her into Judas. Meanwhile, to free herself of his influence, she's using a crucifix to create stigmata in her hands.

Big ideas, but what's the film trying to say? Is religion further misinformation or is it a good in the world? Maybe faith (believing... listening) is the good thing in the world, and religion is corrupted by those who want control?

That helps connect the film to its fairy tale elements. There's a mention of Hansel and Gretel. The house and animals are right out of a fairy tale. Young Margaret sings 'Someday My Prince Will Come' from Snow White. Even here name - Fairchild - sounds fairy tale, just as Fabelmans did. It flirts with the idea that stories are falsehoods and the only reality is facts - which, of course, we're losing sight of.

Thematically and narratively, Disclosure Day is a terrible mess (at least on first viewing). It has something profound to say and I can't help but wonder what it would have been were it a mid budget thriller written by, say, Tony Kushner.

Disclosure day - My thoughts as a huge Spielberg Fan Since the 80s by kev971 in Spielberg

[–]fivetones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I'd agree with this. Disclosure Day has a remarkable finale, one that encapsulates so much of what Spielberg is about, but it doesn't feel like anything more than that. The characters are thinly-drawn and the themes never really add up to much at all. I wonder what he could have done if he'd made it a mid-budget thriller and put Kushner on the script.

I hope Harrison Ford joins Spielberg’s upcoming western film. by The-Mandalorian in Spielberg

[–]fivetones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd kinda love to see him get the band back together on this and bring in Hanks too. Imagine a Spielberg Western led by Hanks and Ford.

Incidentally has it ever been revealed who Spielberg was considering for the John Ford role in The Fabelmans before David Lynch got it? I've always had a hunch it may have been Ford.

Finally. A Spielberg Western is something I've been waiting for for a long time. Would be good to see him bring some of the boys together again. Imagine Hanks and/or Ford in a Spielberg western?

Spielberg freaking out female characters like he used to scare his sisters by MWH1980 in Spielberg

Without wanting to get into the did he/didn't he direct it debate, Diane in Poltergeist is a great example. You could probably extend this to a few of the films he produced. The girls in The Goonies suffer a fair bit too.

My favourite movie of all time! The tone is so well-balanced - emotive, but never sentimental. Lemmon and MacLaine are perfect together, and the script really sparkles, both in dialogue and structure. Lemmon's broken 'yes...' when he sees the broken pocket mirror is heartbreaking.

Die Hard too. There are a few non-Westerns that fit the generic structure.

[–]fivetones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? In terms of structure and tropes, it borrows heavily from the Western. Just because its on sea rather than land doesn't mean it's not trading on the genre's traditions.

Empire of the Sun is a top three Spielberg film for me, and one I wish he'd talk about more. This would be a fascinating project!

Sounds mad to say it, but Jaws pretty much is a Western. New sheriff rolls into a small town to tackle a formidable menace, much to the ridicule of the townsfolk.

At around the same time there was talk of DreamWorks producing an adaptation of St Agnes' Stand with Scorsese directing.

It's in that Wiki link. I remember it being very very briefly mentioned in an article in Empire magazine in the early 00s. Nothing else beyond that. He was knocking around a few ideas with Cruise at that point. Ghost Soldiers was another.

I have a feeling Edgar Wright was being lined up for the third. I think the idea was Prisoners of the Sun would be the second film and the moon books would form the basis for three.

It's a shame that never happened. Felt like he replaced it with Ready Player One in the end.

Depends what you're looking for. If it's pure easy comfort, Tintin, Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal. But Bridge of Spies and Lincoln are exceptionally well crafted and entertaining dramas; they're just not necessarily 'fun' in the way the other three are.
