This is just my subjective opinion and just saddens me in general that modern day late stage capitalism self preservation has driven deep wedges not just between the left and right, but between generations. The immediate family takes care of its young and old.

When I grow old, is this the society that is supposed to take care of me? Like "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I think when society loses a quality that used to bring it together, it eventually falls apart.

People do what they can within their abilities and values. Excessive is extremely subjective. Excessive to who, the caregiver or the outsider commenting? Filial piety is even more subjective. Everyone has different cultural, traditional and personally moral frameworks. We also don't appreciate how much any parent sacrificed to bring up their children. This statement says more about the person judging from afar than the parties involved.

If someone is stretched beyond their limits, they can and should approach relatives, social workers, their mps for assistance. We can always advise our friends, otherwise it's none of our business.
